5,000 Entrants for SFV at EVO

Impressive.

I wonder why KI isnt more popular though, its fighting mechanics are extremely solid, character diversity is very high, and its very well balanced. I wish more people were into it.

Is it just that SF has been around (and really good) for so long? Can any big SF loving players explain why they dont like KI?

It was exclusive to the Xbox for too long and it's characters are wack. It's a really fun game though. It could never live up to Street Fighter though.

As a player who primarily grew up with Capcom fighters, KI is just kinda boring and uninteresting mechanically for me.

Maybe someone else will chime in with a more indepth answer on the mechanics/style.

I can tell you one thing: when someone picks what game they are going to devote to, they want to know it will be around and relevent for years to come. Ki can build that up but it'll take a long time.

The step to PC will go a long way for KIs future, for sure.

Because fighting games are absolutely irrelevant (competitively and sales-wise).

SF5 is the least irrelevant apart from Smash if you consider them to be the same genre. NRS games can sell well. Tekken does well in Asian arcades. The e-sports aspect gets bigger year by year but it's gonna take a while.

KI, an initially Xbox exclusive with (relatively) no-name characters and no history with the competitive community is a small fish in a small pond.

Yeah without that it wouldnt have a chance. If it was on steam, that would show thats really cared about the game.

MS said that some of their Windows 10 only games will eventually go to Steam, I'd expect KI to be near the top of the list when that time comes.

Thanks guys! I appreciate hearing some opinions on this stuff. KI definitely has an eclectic cast of characters for sure, and I can understanding wanting to put time into a game that is guaranteed to be around for years and years.

So mostly just a time thing then?

It would be nice if some more people from other more long standing fighting games would pick up KI and help elevate it up.But I understand why they mostly just want to stick with the games they know.

Had KI not fell off the face of the earth since forever, it could have had the time to build its audience. It's almost like having to start from zero where at least street fighter had side games like cvs2, marvel vs, and the ex games to keep the characters at least fresh in people's minds.

Man, there have been a lot of great fighting games that never really made it big. KI is a great game, no doubt. It has had more competitive life than most fighting games.

Plus the older KI games werent really that good either, haha.

Sure, it does all right, I guess Im just mostly curious why people who play capcom fighters havent jumped all over it, since its fairly similar mechanically.

The other thing is as a spectator sport, I think KI is easier to follow and flashier which makes it really exciting to watch, but I dont see enough people in the tournament threads talking about it.

Personally, I didn't enjoy the combo breaker aspect of it. Relied too much on mindgames and guesses for me.

That being said, I can't deny that Killer Instinct is a fantastic fighting game and deserves more success and recognition than it currently has.

EDIT: AND DAT SOUNDTRACK!!

Amazing how a single shitpost can diverge a discussion of great news.

Congrats to SFV

Fans of this game are very sensitive so any quick troll comment like that usually diverges thread. I don't blame the fans i blame capcom for making this game an easy target to troll.Fans of anything will always defend their product. It's nothing new.

And for sure man Congrats to SFV and EVO. Will daigo be washed up again? Who knows...

What makes it even crazier is that , in terms of these 5k players, it's not even really 3 days. EVO historically goes from Street Fighter pools all the way to top 8 on Friday. One day. Unless they're switching it up, that will be an incredible feat if they pull it off this year.

For sure. I hope Sony supplies them with lots of PS4's. They are going to need so many stations. But Mr. Wizard is experienced when it comes to running the biggest FG tournament in the world. I am sure he got everything planned out.

It doesn't help that the original games just weren't very good.
Then again SFV has received fktons of flak and bad user reviews.

For me, EVO started as a Capcom-centric event so it is a tradition. KI is a new face challenger.

The next popular games at Evo after SFV are Smash, Smash and Pokken.

Brand is the most important thing
However, it seems like MK has overtaken SF in popularity. Also it doesn't explain Mahvel and Injustice since the comic brands are huge now.

And in the end, it will still be Infiltration x Tokido.

JWong save us!

Who am I kidding? America will stay free in SF as always.

Explain what? Why they aren't popular anymore? It's because they're old games that don't get support anymore.

Killer Instinct is also Xbone only which doesn't help its audience grow. Yeah, it's on PC now but c'mon FGC is poverty.

Injustice 2 I expect to do pretty well once it releases. Same with a MvC4 if it ever came out. But yeah you can't expect much from older games, like people said Melee is a huge exception.

SFV costume and color selects to take longer than smash button checks confirmed

Man as much as I love playing Smash 4 competitively, button checks/hand warmers are so drawn out in this community. It's like geez, check if your buttons work/check for monitor lag and let's effing play. Wanted to warm up? Should have done it before the tourney started

How does seeding work, completely random,
Pros get any special treatments?

What kind of rules are in place,
If your name is called and no show in 30 seconds that's forfeit?

Got to keep those games moving along.
But curious how huge things like this are organized.

Mr. Wizard was encouraging people to sign up earlier this week...trying to hit that 5000k mark before the deadline.

So, either they're more prepared than we think, or they're crazy.

It worked for me ... people kept re-tweeting that comment about a fast approaching deadline and I said FINE and I signed up for SFV despite being total ass at the game. I mostly just wanted a vacation and figured I may as well play a game briefly while I'm there. This year is going to be HUUUGE.

UMvC3 is hella old at this point. Hell, it's a miracle that it outlived USFIV.

Just saw this news and wanted to say that's really great to hear.

SFV has been a hugely enjoyable game despite some severe missteps with it's launch and it's gratifying to see it growing in popularity.

Ki not sf5 deserves that amount.

Your avatar looking like a Pringles logo seems a fitting label given this post's high salt content.

Killer Instinct fans being super-obnoxious in SFV threads is a regular thing I take it?

Alright, so. Enlighten me about this whole entrants process at EVO cause I'm not too familiar. Do they just keep doing elimination matches all weekend long 24 hours in order to whittle down to a final 8 by Sunday night (and also a losers bracket)?
