No Man's Sky went gold

Isnt the game played online? I dont know how game-breaking PC mods would even be possible if so.

It's sort of quasi online-like. Everyone is in their own "instance" of the same universe based on the same universe seed and algorithms, and all of our online discoveries are saved into a common database, called the Atlas. Also when two players are close in this common universe, they can somehow share the same universe and see each other, but the exact details of this interaction are SUPER sketchy atm.

I think the concern on the PC side is people being able to mod their game in such a way that they can either travel super fast, or change their location at will through memory manipulation so that they reach the center before everyone else and make all of the "discoveries" there. Also if people mess with their own universe seed settings and try to upload them, there's an outside chance of problems when those players upload what is essentially garbage data into the main Atlas database. What those problems would be only Hello Games knows, but you know people are going to try.

Is this game Multiplayer? Steam shows it as only having single player :c

Due to the scale, it's basically single player.

But it does have online functionality:

1) Being able to upload your discoveries to the Hello Games servers. Other players would be able to then see your discoveries, or, in the off chance they manage to actually stumble across your discovered planet/star system, they'd be informed that you were the one to discover them.

2) It's possible to encounter another player in the game, but the odds of that happening are pretty astronomical. There are 18 quintillion planets in the game. I supposed if you and a friend tried to coordinate meeting at a specific solar system, on a specific planet, at specific coordinates, you could, but it'd probably take you a very long time to physically travel to said location to meet up.

It's best to just view the game as a single player experience.

Welp, here's a quick and dirty book cover attempt, looked through some old sci-fi book covers and basically most of them have these thick, large fonts for the title, so I decided to use a font that's a bit more reminiscent of the time, instead of the original thin NMS logo font.

EDIT:
BTW, not my intention to hijack the thread or anything, was simply inspired by something More_Badass said so I wanted to try what an NMS book cover might look like, that's all. :)

Oh my god I love you, this is so perfect and generally sums up how I feel about this game's vibe.

I meant to comment on this when you posted it and I didn't get around to it, but it's awesome! Really hits my nostalgia button from the books I used to read in the library.

Thanks, and to everyone else in the thread. Tweeted it to Sean, hope they like it as well.

Anyway, I played around with Space Engine the other day, haven't touched that thing in months, and it just feels fantastic and incredibly calming to find a nice looking planet with a colorful atmosphere, hang around and look at the sunrise/sunset or standing under an eclipse. I hope we'll be able to just put the engine on very slow burn and just orbit a planet for a few minutes in NMS, do some of that slow space stuff from time to time. There's really no reason we can't, but maybe they'll force some things on the player a bit, like less fine control over speed, always being pulled towards the planet if close enough (so you'd constantly need to adjust your altitude), but those are just minor quirks.

This is an amazing bit of work! Would you be willing to do a version of that which could be printed out and used as an alternate cover for a PS4 case? I think that would make a great cover for the game itself!

Thanks! Sure, I could probably do something about that, just need to see the dimensions and how to wrap the whole thing around, I've never made a custom PS4 cover before. I'm guessing it's best if the cover didn't really have any of the default PS4 side art and back info, but instead it would be cool to have like a portrait of the author/team, a short summary, a longer review, short excerpts and whatever else would usually go on the back of those books.

Am I the only one who's going to try to fly from a planet to another one without using the hyper drive or whatever it's called in this game ? and see how much time it takes ? :p
