Why is the game so small?

Same reason why Minecraft is small but has as massive world the size of roughly Neptune.

A majority of the assets that take up space are just the basic textures and audio.

Everything else on the world generation end is just a seed that creates the voxel world out of a mathematical formula.

No Man's Sky takes the same premise and dials it up to 11.

This is by far the best and it's a more recent build:

Just watched this again, as well as the one released a week later with Anthony Carboni, and I just realized something I never paid attention to before.

Sean says the bright light is the center of the UNIVERSE, in BOTH videos. What are the odds that he accidentally said universe when he meant galaxy, twice?

I was sure it was the center of the galaxy we all start in, until now...

edit: This game needs to be out, right now.

I can understand the desire to play with friends in NMS, at least in theory. It might actually be a shit experience unless the game was completely rebalanced. I can understand wanting to tool around with friends though. But to just say "nope I'm out" seems weird. Do your friends just not play single-player games at all?

Most single player games have a Start > End progression. This game is very different. Some people don't enjoy the sense of isolationism a game makes them feel.I personally don't either most of the time because I don't want a game to try and make me feel depressed. I just don't get that same sort of feeling from this game.

Well i mean in a star Map video there is clearly only one bright light across multiple galaxies so im fairly certain thats what it is.

If any game warrants a digital purchase over a physical one, it's this game. Unless you are getting a limited edition or something.

Nope. I personally think it is the other way around. I would rather know that I will always have access to this game (long as I have a working PS4) vs. at the whim of Sony taking it away for whatever reason (and with Sony and their customer service if something goes wrong this isn't so far fetched a worry honestly).

I worry more about my PS4 dying than my ability to play a digital purchase disappearing.

But to each their own.

Another one.

Both are pretty sweet, this second one I probably like more, nice stuff! I'm doing something similar myself, but there's some stuff I want to figure out how to rearrange, make little details and make it easy to swap the cover images while keeping all of the details, tears etc.

Yeah, he's been more insistent in naming the goal "the center of the universe" in the later interviews. I think he just wants to emphasize that the game has an entire universe in it, without the need to explain more, but who knows. Like, if he'd be constantly saying "the center of the galaxy", he'd have to then add "but there's a whole universe to explore", and then plenty of journalists would start asking "so are there other galaxies, how do you get to them" etc, as has happened before, so maybe he just doesn't want to deal with the questions and let something slip.

Or, the galactic map is always showing the entire universe, and there's a bright light at its center for some story reason. I don't think we've ever seen anything on the map screens so far that indicates they're showing multiple galaxies through all of those nebulae (since there's plenty enough stars inside a single galaxy to fly through that "fog" for hours on end), but again, we don't really know.

The idea of the center of any galaxy leading to all other galaxies, thus technically acting as the center of the game's universe is something that makes sense to me, while still being spoilery enough for them to want to keep it under wraps.

Yeah, the edge tears and spine crease are the main things missing from mine, but I'm 50/50 as to whether or not I really want to add it.

I get the isolationist factor of the game but I have friends who are completely out on the game now that they know they will likely never be able to meet up with friends in game. Which is a bummer.

Then they really weren't that interested in the game to begin with. If no traditional coop is a deal breaker, then the game was never going to hold them for long.

There were things I learned about the game as it developed that bummed me out, but never turned me off of the game. Co-op was a thing that bummed me out, but everything else that was actually in the game outweighed me being bummed that I couldn't play it with my friends, or my wife. And then there were features that Sean said wouldn't be in the game that ended up being in the game.

Very little is a deal breaker for me when I'm really excited and interested in a game. It sounds to me like your friends would have burned out on the game fast if all that interested them in it was multiplayer. NMS just isn't that type of game.

Honestly for an OT title, I wouldn't do some pun or silly phrase. I'd choose from a quote or title from classic sci fi.

No Man's Sky |OT| The Stars, My Destination
No Man's Sky |OT| Brave New Worlds
No Man's Sky |OT| 2016: A Space Odyssey

And seriously, if someone has the art chops, the perfect OT design would be it to look a sci-fi book cover

The screenshot thread should be called:
No Man's Sky Screenshot Thread | The GAFfer's Guide to the Galaxy

It has to be this, nothing else just this
Kubrick fanboy here
no really it's perfection

Welp, here's a quick and dirty book cover attempt, looked through some old sci-fi book covers and basically most of them have these thick, large fonts for the title, so I decided to use a font that's a bit more reminiscent of the time, instead of the original thin NMS logo font.

EDIT:
BTW, not my intention to hijack the thread or anything, was simply inspired by something More_Badass said so I wanted to try what an NMS book cover might look like, that's all. :)

Love that font-

Man, ive become feverish for some NMS content. Less than a month now. I wonder if we will get any prelaunch shit or if it will be a quiet launch for surprises. Even crazier if copies leak out being this has been such a secretive title.

I have zero idea why you typed that much in response to me just saying my friends don't want to buy it know. You seem to care more than I do lol.

Guys, all of this talk of what the OT is going to be called and making incredible alternative covers is making me think this game is a lot closer than it actually is

It's gonna be a long month

I don't believe Sean wants you to feel depressed playing this game. The acts of discovery are unique to you as a player, it's supposed to make you feel amazing.

Your friends either associate gaming heavily with social activity, like it's difficult going to a bar on your own, or they have anxiety issues with being alone which are growing in the age of Facebook.

Man this is really confusing. First of all, they never showed us "the outer end of the galaxy". There are "ball shaped" galaxies, but i fear that in the game this galaxy (or universe??) will never end. I think that their procedual system can't allow to not have anything. It would be really awesome to see the galaxy from far away showing it's entirity, it would make it more real than stars after stars with no end in sight.

Here's another one I just whipped up, went for a hardcover novel look :)

That's quite a sharp looking piece, though for some reason, it actually feels more contemporary to me. I feel like I'd see that in a bookstore right now, rather than 50 years ago, but it looks great.

I remember at E3 or PSX they had that 65Days concert, and they had footage from the game constantly looping in the back, except most of the footage was crazy weird visuals of that Triangular thing on the cover art, like some 2001 psychedelic shit. I'd guess a lot of that is actually in the game, maybe center of the universe stuff.
