Should above WiiU at the end of the year or early 2017 at worst then. Getting better in terms of japanese software.
Will be interesting to compare it to NX next year.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that only 3 million console sold in a country of +100 million people and where we live in an age where gaming have penetrated casual and even the ''cool'' market.

Japan went mobile, that's all the explanation you need.

It is stunning, really. I can't believe that console gaming has been completely supplanted by mobile in that country, because they are such different experiences.

Don't need a console when you can game anywhere on your mobile phone. Handheld gaming has always been big there, the transition to phones was natural.

...in the week where seemingly every other thread on GAf is about a single mobile game

Consoles isn't cool in Japan at all, lol.
It's seen as nerdy and uncool. Perhaps not as bad as before but still. The cool kids don't play shit or stick to playing cheap and terrible smartphone gatcha games ;)

I feel like a lot of people's perceptions of Japan as a market are about a decade out-of-date and based on anime or badly-written "oh man Nippon so caraazy!" articles. Soft console hardware sales, even among best sellers, are no surprise.

Wii U a decent boost last week thanks the new bundle, but unless Nintendo shipped a lot of those new bundles PS4 should still surpass Wii U in September or October at worst.

How much did the PS3 manage in a comparative number of weeks?

I'm curious to see how much it dropped by.
This. I'd like to see a comparison to the PS3 in the same timeframe.
I don't know if it's a perfect comparison but looking at the Media Create numbers for PS3 at the same time into its lifespan as PS4 is now (2 years and 4 1/2 months in Japan) PS3 was at 2,970,538. So it's actually slightly outpacing it.

Mobile games killed console gaming in Japan...

Just looking the Japan sale numbers
PS2 reach 9.65m in 2 years..lifetime numbers as of 2008, 21m units
PS3 lifetime was 3m
Looks like it started with PS3..

I know PS3 will eventually outpace PS4 as of selling rate but man PS3 was selling terrible at that time..

About the same.

PS3: 2.970.538
PS4: 3.000.477

Fall 2009 was pretty massive for PS3 though (Slim and FFXIII) so we shall see does PS4 manage to stay on the same pace. Also comparing launch aligned sales can be little tricky as PS3 launched in holidays and PS4 in february so the consoles hit holiday periods during different weeks when comparing.

Even if the console market is bad (at least wiiu got more million sellers than the PS3), the 3DS managed to sell 20+M HW. Let's see if both Sony/Ninty and 3rd parties can manage some revival of the core market...

Yeah, don't know why I said 2017 lol. Still, it's not selling that well/fast, doubt it'll be in september.

Just enough install base for DQ11!

DQ11 is all about that 3DS version in Japan :p

Surprising that they're both on about the same level with each other considering the doom and gloom regarding the Japanese console market right now. September will be a great month for the PS4 with FFXV and Persona 5 alone, but I doubt it'll be able to keep the pace with the PS3 overall.

Yeah, it won't. At least the PS4 May end up with more million seller: FF XV, VII remake and DQ XI.

Entirely anecdotal, but it always feels like there's a significant amount of Japanese chatter about PSVR on Twitter every day.

I can see VR giving PS4 a good boost in the territory.

Considering that Kingsglaive bombed in Japan, I'm not sure if FFXV will be a big hit in Japan. I mean, Kingsglaive was probably not aimed at a Japanese audience in the first place due to the westernized designs and the lack of famous VAs, but it doesn't exactly inspire hope.

A movie tie-in that got a limited theatre release that, like Advent Children, will probably make the bulk of its money on home release?

Yeah, I wouldn't put too much stock in Kingsglaive's box office numbers when it comes to the commercial prospects of XV.

You also have to remember that the PS3 was splitting the market with the Wii and the tenacious 360, at the time, and still putting up these numbers (which were still considered weak at the time).

PS4 is doing similar numbers to PS3 but with no competition to make up the rest of the console sales. It demonstrates the market is even weaker than it was in 2006. Decent for Sony that they were able to carve out a console niche, but yea, the market ain't doing so hot.
