Who said everything is fine? There is shit going on in the unstable parts of the world, but times as a whole have rarely, if ever been better or safer. Welcome to the information age...We see everything now.

This could be fucked up if people start going and try to fight off the military

Egypt didn't fail because of the constitution. Country failed because the people voted for the first best religious anti-democratic party.

But this too is democracy I guess.

I am hopeful this turns out well, god knows I won't miss that ****-fucker Erdogan, but I never expect a positive outcome of things like this until it is proven.

Edrogan was bad news from the start and complete devolution backwards.
He overstepped his bounds by trying to erode democratic and judicial institutions.

I hope Turkey reverts back to its secular self again

Basically, the landmass to the immediate right of Greece on any map? That's Turkey, also known as Asia Minor and Anatolia in historic or geographical contexts.

Turkey was the closest thing to a gateway into Europe for various powers from the Middle East for literally millennia - the arguable beginnings of a singular Greek identity comes from fighting off a Persian Empire. When Istanbul - then Constantinople - was the heart of the (eastern) Roman Empire, it was seen as a bulwark for Christendom against a rising Islam from the east. The Ottoman Empire centred its rule there, with Greek Christians used as a source of easy labour and slave soldiers. Several centuries of subjugation came to an end in the 19th century as the Ottoman Empire was recession, and the various peoples of the Balkans (the mountain region in and around Greece) threw off Ottoman rule. Wasn't that long after that the Ottomans then had Ataturk come along and rebuild the empire into Turkey. It is a long and bloody history to say the least.

Writing out this post took time and I know this thread moves fast, so any further clarification on which faction this might be?

Seriously though, neither side would be foolish enough to attack a US military installation (and a NATO ally) because of the implications, and because both sides need the US on side.

Cyprus is still a flashpoint. After a Greek military coup in the seventies the Turkish military took advantage and invaded then occupied the north of the island where there was a large Turkish Cypriot (as opposed to Greek Cypriot) population.

There's a whole seventies beach resort ghost town - Famagusta - that would be fascinating to go and see if it wasn't incredibly dangerous and locked down by the Turkish military.

Edit for clarity: Cyprus is an island off the coast of both countries that both claim. It's split in half as a result of the actions in the seventies but neither side recognises the right of the other to occupy the island.

Can't really put much stock in a statement issued in the midst of a coup, but the only thing to really do right now is hope that the motivations and aims of this group are as they say.


NBC now reporting Erdogan is seeking asylum in Germany.

Um I have mixed feeling about this, and it all depends for the reason of the coup. If its the secularists taking over then yay, if its the far right religious weirdos than nay.

Erdogan have been playing wannabe Caliph for too fucking long. The guy was a direct threat to secularism. Anyone who's been pro-secularism should be okay with this.

Now let's hope Turkey doesn't turn into a military dictatorship.
