I really am a complete newbie when it comes to PC parts and building computers - which brings me swiftly on to my next question. If I buy the set up you posted, could I get that pre-built, or would I have to assemble it myself?

I had an IKEA LED strip on the back of my monitor, literally just held in place with regular tape but the rear of my main monitor is a glossy/smooth surface, very easy to stick stuff to.

In this case you would be building it yourself. There may be a site in the U.K that does a similar service to NCIX in the U.S/Canada though where you order the parts from a specific site and they build it for a relatively small fee. However, the parts are usually more expensive with such a service as well as you aren't able to shop around for the best deals on each part/limited selection.
Anyone know if there's a service like that in the U.K?

I just went for freesync thinking they will eventually open up and that they were cashing In while they were the only one on the market. I think I should've went with your strategy because apparently gsync is better at lower framerates or has lower input lag or something at lower framerates, someone else can confirm that, I'm not the greatest when it comes to display technology.

Finally about to pull the trigger on a new pc, just can't decide on freesync or gsync. I really hate this propriety bullshit built into monitors, especially forcing you to choose between the two vendors.

I'm thinking a gsync monitor for now with a rx480 then when nvidia release a real a sync compute card possible next year, then sell the rx480 and go to nvidia.

Thinking about getting a new video card, I've had an HD 6800 for years now and it's beginning to show its age. But my budget is nowhere near a 1080 or 1070, so something along the lines of GTX 970 is what I can afford. Is it worth buying now or should I wait a while for prices to go down? Or perhaps get a different video card (in the same price range)?

Hmm, i believe mines are very old models, the 120 ohms ones, not the newer models which are 50 ohms. Its a miracle that they are still holding up after all those years, the plastic is starting to crack, but still not fully blown out like some i've seen on the web.

I used a pack of Sugru on my setup, works great and is easy easy to scrape off when you wanna take it off, dries in under 24 hours and very strong, plus I put it on top of the adhesive and then wrapped it around a small part of the LED strip so that the maximum amount of light is visible

Only weird thing is when I boot my PC it sounds like it fails to post once or twice, retries automatically, and then is successful. There's no message about overclocking failure like I used to get and it keeps all the OC settings I had set. Weird.

If your budget is around the $200-300 range the rx480 is great at $240. The 1060 just came out as well, but it's a $60 premium for about the same performance.
Make sure you get the new AMD drivers for the 480.

No problem. I would go to Settings -> Update & Recovery -> Windows Update and make sure it says "Windows is up to date" and you should be good there. Might take a couple re-starts for it to get all of them. I don't remember installing any specific hardware drivers except for my mobo, GPU and monitor.

This motherboard only has one PCIe slot, bro.
In addition to what others have said. (mITX in a Full tower case, Mobo only has 1 PCIE slot, so you can't use that sound card and GFX card at the same time)
The motherboard only has 4 SATA slots, so you wouldn't be able to connect the 5 drives you have listed.
Get a full size motherboard, and pick up that wifi adapter.
Thermal paste will come on the CPU Cooler. PSU is fine.

Get whichever you can get the best deal on. Remember that the third-party 480s still haven't been released. I hope these 1060 numbers lights a fire under them and they release the fucking things.

made a few changes (120gb ssd instead, and different ram due to availability and ordering from 3 different places) but you got me in a good spot.
I talked it over with her and we're going to wait for the 470 instead of getting the 480 since I'll be upgrading in a year or so, so this is well under budget and better parts than my original build.

She has a macbook for all of her "important" stuff, this PC is mostly for games. 120 should cover the important ones, and then the 1tb for everything else she's ok with.
She doesn't like to install a lot of things over separate drives.

This should do you nicely. You wont need 16gb RAM, so here's 8gb of DDR4 @ 2133mhz. And you might need to revise your budget up to $550 because going any lower than that you're not going to get quality. This is a fairly solid recommendation. My only worry is video editing takes up alot of Hard drive space and WoW while slightly affected load times would see any crazy differences because alot of it is based on instancing/load times from the server side. I think it might be a better idea to use that money to get a 2GB HDD like this. It's about a $3 difference from the SSD you linked.

I'm after a new 2TB HDD and a 1TB backup external drive, is there anything good for around £50 for the HDD and £40 for the External? I'd prefer something slightly cheaper than the 2TB WD Blue WD20EZRZ mentioned in the OP if possible. Looking at amazon UK the best seller seems to be the Toshiba HDTB310EK3AA 1 TB Canvio Basics but i have no idea if that's the best choice for an external at that sort of price.
Kabylake is supposed* to launch late December, probably January. It'll have support for Optane, which should be a game changer for data storage.

Depends who you ask, Kaby lake (14nm refresh) expected late 2016, early 2017 and cannonlake (new 10nm process) mid-late 2017. Personally Cannonlake is the go to upgrade for that reason given intel is now doing a tick tick tock cycle so you can expect to be on 10nm for at least 3 years.

5-10% increase, Moore's law really went out the window. The 6600k is only a 50% increase on my processor and it's 4 years older. I guess i'll probably wait at this point then anyway. It'll make it seem more worthwhile, seeing as it's going to cost like £500+ for the processor, Motherboard and RAM.

Right click on desktop -> Display Settings -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display adapter properties -> Monitor tab
If you have not changed the refresh rate previously, it should only be running at 60hz. You might also wanna look at your Nvidia control panel settings under custom resolutions. Its best to leave it as is if you have changed it and use something like RTSS to limit your fps imo.

Yes 1070 is well above recommended specs for VR. Also again for gaming you will really really not see any benefit from 32GB of ram vs 16. You likely won't even use 16 ever while the system is still viable.
