Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

My biggest concern: will this thing be comfortable to hold? The 3DS is an ergonomic nightmare, the Wii U gamepad is better but still a bit cumbersome. NX better be lighter than both and melt in my hands.

No bald cap? Lies!
I'm interested.

I play my DS a ton, it's the only dedicated gaming platform I still use. Everything else I do on PC. So having a unified platform for the NX sounds good to me.

That said, I was still hoping for two units; a capable handheld and a strong console that shared the same library, with then the console having some exclusives utilizing it's greater horsepower. Just a single mobile unit is a much bolder move but it definitely has its shortcomings.

This could still work but I'm curious to see just exactly how it pans out. Doesn't seem like it would/could be all that more powerful than the Wii U, let alone close to the Xbone or PS4, and even then battery life will be very short even with an efficient mobile chipset like the Tegra line.

I guess they could underclock the chip while on the go and then when placed in the docking station with a dedicated power source utilize it fully, but that could be confusing for consumers if they had games that only ran while docked. Unless they do stuff like lower the resolution and effects while on the go compared to at home, which might work since I'm sure the handheld screen won't be HD.

Over reactions aside, it sounds interesting. I like the shared library aspect. Just need Nintendo to reveal it soon for a clearer picture.

I trust Eurogamer, but for now i'll remain skeptical for the reasons listed this morning in the other thread. This sounds exactly like the opposite of an affordable home system that will be part of a family of consoles that share the same architecture.

Did you even read the chip article? How about OsirisBlack's comment about it being able to handle Ps4/XB1 ports with. "Little to no problem?"

If the chip is the X2--and I'm willing to bet it is, based on active cooling and fan in devkits and the delay--this could easily handle ports.
Would make sense to go with that. Also geforce now to stream third party titles that don't get a direct port?

Oooook...

I don't know what to think. I love portable gaming and have no time anymore for home consoles so I guess I should be happy.
But I am not sure the idea will interest western markets...
We have to know more, Hopefully Nintendo will make a move very soon.

Shall we wait until the actual reveal to start complaining about specifics such as design, power, etc? Because right now nobody knows what it actually looks like and what's under the hood.

Waiting for the shitty fake concepts to start flooding very soon though

I'm totally going to make a crappy mockup soon!

I JUMPED TO CONCLUSIONS, HUH? HUH!? TAKE THAT YOU GUYS

LOL!!!

That series of patents which show various methods of 2 player/1 handheld gaming make sense now.

Oooh, you're right!

What? It effectively eliminates software droughts. No months-long Wii U droughts while 3DS gets games. No more 3DS droughts so Wii U gets games. Steady stream of releases for one system means no droughts.

Absolutely!

EDIT:

LOL!!! Literally right before I posted too!

If this is supposed to dock to a TV, I doubt it'll be dual-screen.

That article mentions a dock.

I believe they designed a dock around the handheld's physical design and not the other way around. It can be designed that the dock acts as a charging station and when you hit the power on the dock it activates the handheld. The Wii U or 3DS charging dock designed around the device. Imagine those just with TV functionality.

its kinda good for nintendo, now they can focus on one console only

My guess is that this dock station, may function like a expansion pack

As a handheld this sounds great but I'm worried about the home console experience from this. Nintendo bowing out of that market?

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Wonder if Nintendo would make a cheaper home-only variant of that thing that features the same hardware but ditches the screen, the battery, and the docking mechanisms.

Great news. After all - the DS / 3DS have one of the most compelling software libraries of all time and were my favorite iteration of the handheld gaming system. I am in for this. Especially since now Nintendo can focus on one really good version of Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Mario, Pokemon, etc etc. That's the real takeaway here. No more splitting of the handheld and home versions of things. And if it's at least as powerful as the Wii U (which still looks beautiful TBH) then I am totally in. Might finally get rid of my PS4 to get this (since I have a gaming PC).

Just release some great games and I'll be there. Hopefully this hybrid setup means they will be able to crank out more titles.

IntelliHeath

As in "Heathcliff"
If it's true then I hope hybrid denyers are going to owe it up to people because they kept telling us that we were wrong about NX being hybrid.

I was told that I'm wrong to expect some kind of hybrid handheld/console.

First and foremost, I love the idea (assuming any of this is true). I like that they're not trying to compete, and doing their own thing again. It does raise a thousand questions though. If it's a true hybrid, and it docks into a unit that then displays to the TV, when we're gaming at home, are we meant to take out one of the attached controllers from either side of the unit? Considering the likely dimensions of a docked controller like that, would it be good enough for home use? Or will we have to buy a "pro" controller separately? I'm guessing it'll be the latter, as Nintendo generally makes a lot of money back from peripheral sales.

Well, Nintendo finally focusing on a single hardware after the last couple of years is a great news, if anything. Solves a ton of problems that plagued them in the recent years.

I'm in, now only to see the price and how comfortable the controller is.

What are the arguments FOR moving your business pretty much 100% into a market that has nearly evaporated by mobile (handheld gaming)? If this information is correct, this is a handheld first, and console second. Why move into that market now?

It will fly off shelves in Japan. Very curious to know how it will fare in the West.

I'm definitely more interested now.

How does Tegra compares do WiiU, though?

This would be really cool, don't know the execution would be but I think that it reminds me a lot of the Nvidia Shield if it had the Famicom design.

As long as it gets Japanese support it's all good in the hood for me. I'm never expecting significant Western support for a Nintendo system again.

Hurry up with that reveal Nintendo, we're like 8 months from the 'release' date.

A shared library could be huge. My biggest hope for the NX was for all those amazing franchises to get a home console version.

Imagine SMT V, next MonHun, Next Dragon Quest will all be made with a home console in mind (DQ11 already was but hey)

AND FIYAH EMBURUM TOO! Can I get a HELL YEAH??!

Yep. Been saying for the longest time that this is Nintendo's only option going forward. They're dead in the traditional home console space.

They needed to leverage their monopoly in the portable arena to keep a foot in the door of home consoles. This thing will be awesome.

We were ridiculed :')

*vindicated*

Yeah. I mean, it was kinda obvious, was it not? I never considered "because Iwata said so" a compelling counter-argument.

Can you link the Orisis post and the devkit stuff?

Is there a genuine good reason for going back to cartridges besides faster/no loading? Aren't they more expensive to produce and less reliable than discs?!

This is ultimately not what I want, again. It's depressing because I have to play Mario and Zelda games, but they're always trapped in weak hardware. Now the handheld side is invading what little power there was in their consoles.

I'd rather Nintendo give up making handhelds so that games like Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon and Animal Crossing had better graphics.

Wow so this basically covers the handheld segment in Asia , the home console in the west in just one product? Smart I say!

Well other than the fact it'll be overpriced for the handheld market...so won't sell

...and underpowered and overpriced for the console market....so won't sell.

Worst of both worlds.

Hopefully they'll be smart enough to have a console only version in the planning stages without the extra cost of the handheld needing to be incorporated..
