Here we are. Sounds solid (so probably legit) for the first time.

The nonbelievers who kept saying "IT'S NOT GONNA BE A HYBRID!" .. Where are you now?

I'm shoked. Not our fault, that's Iwata's quote that they weren't gonna merge the hardware who mislead us.

The supplemental device patent is starting to make sense, to boost the docking station and/or attach an HDD. Local cloud computing too maybe?

SERIOUSLY. This is just another fucking rumor, I see no reason to treat it as any more true than all the other 'credible' rumors.

Other people known for Nintendo rumors like Emily Rogers and ShockingAlberto said this was coming and it comes from a very reliable source.

Hmm, what do you mean by that?

The design constraints of a handheld are clearly more acute than those of a console, so they will always take precedence when creating a hybrid system.

Obviously there are more details to come. Do games get an extra boost when connected to the dock? Does the dock do anything at all to enhance the game for the TV? Just based on the article, though, it sounds to me like nothing more than a handheld you can plug into a TV. That's what I mean by it sounding like a handheld first and not really a hybrid.

I've never been interested in handhelds...so bye NX.

It would also be funny if the definitive ediotion of Zelda is the one on WiiU.

How much powerful is an X1?

"Due to the radical change in hardware design and internal technology, we've been told by one source that there are no plans for backwards compatibility."

Pretty important to note too if it's true

Get ready for all the Wii U ports.

This makes my Wii U kinda special though. Nintendo's last dedicated home console. I'll give it another hug, the poor thing.

The next Pokemon after Moon/Sun is going to look pretty good huh.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
please dont cheap out on a low res screen, nintendo, even though i know you will

Yeah. That thing really needs a better screen and a better case than the Wii U's GamePad, which just felt dirty cheap. I wouldn't count on it, though. They will probably go for budget hardware.

Why are so many people disapointed about its power? YOU HAVE A PS4, XBOX ONE or PC to choose from if you want power. This is a 2nd console, not a primary one. You buy this and another one.

Nintendo's art style and game type have never required horsepower to fulfill their goals.

This.

If you're still waiting for a spec-competitive Nintendo machine, after the Wii and Wii U generations, I don't know what to tell you. You've clearly not been paying attention for the last... 10 years.

Awesome. I'm x1000 more hyped for anything portable than for home consoles.

Oh, and BTW... wasn't "NX" the codename for the handheld part of the new paradigm? Wasn't there another codename floating around for something else that could be the actual console?

"Nintendo D

The power level thing is bad enough, but if this is actually gonna be a console/handheld hybrid, then that means Nintendo will be designing all their games with handheld sensibilities in mind. Which is terrible for people like me who don't do handheld gaming. :/

I really want to see how Breath of the Wild works on NX. This is the most technically ambitious Nintendo game of all-time. If the NX can do a great version of that, then maybe we'll be ok. If its like a dumbed down ugly version of the Wii U, then we're all fuckin' doomed and you can kiss Super Mario Galaxy 3, Metroid Prime, any other ambitious Zeldas, "Retro's mature AAA new ip", Wonderful 101-2, Bayonetta 3, etc goodbye. It'll only be the handheld franchises or the ones that can translate to handheld like Mario Kart and Smash, and console Nintendo gaming will, essentially, be dead.

"Most likely no backwards compatibility". RIP

Not that exciting ( my point of view) but left me intrigued. Will keep an eye for more.

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
As someone that prefers handheld gaming, I'm wondering if you can just buy that part without the TV dock.

Much like every Nintendo console after the Gamecube (except the 3DS arguably) this thing scares me. It's so markedly different and again shows such a change in dynamic that who the hell knows how this thing will fare.

The DS and Wii blew everyone's minds but Wii U brought them down back to mortal levels. There's always the fear that something progressive can end up being regressive. The price point of this thing also sounds like it will be of concern as well, much like the Wii U.

Either way, good or bad, it's going to be incredibly fascinating to watch and I definitely want to give this thing a spin. I hope this ends up good.

Also, the detachable controllers on both sides - Famicom?

Did you even read the chip article? How about OsirisBlack's comment about it being able to handle Ps4/XB1 ports with. "Little to no problem?"

If the chip is the X2--and I'm willing to bet it is, based on active cooling and fan in devkits and the delay--this could easily handle ports.

No, it can't. It's a handheld. It can't match Xbone.

The Nintendo Corebox fantasy is almost officially dead. RIP.

Nintendo could have made a box twice as powerful as Scorpio and it still wouldn't have gotten decent AAA third-party support. Deal with it.

Correct.

You plug the handheld into the base and use the controllers. It's a different twist on my version, which was to have an HDMI signal sender that uses the WiiU streaming tech and Bluetooth to allow WiiU pro controller and Wii remote use.

I expected WiiU BC though.

Bizarre. I like the idea but it's a bit funny and strange.

So.

X[ ]X

The [ ] is the HH screen. The X's are the controller sides that when detached click together to make a new controller to use when gaming at home. When gaming on the go, the sides of the controller comprise the control scheme for the handheld.

Really, truly unusual. Reminds me of the detachable button patent.

Thanks for the clarification!

I don't understand the hybrid comments. It's not really is it? It's a straight up handheld with a TV output.

A hybrid would suggest it gains extra features/power from its tv dock.

It sounds really cool though!

I'll just consider this a handheld device so the specs don't really matter to me, but I'm worried about the type of third-party support this thing will get.

Who's to say there isn't an extra GPU in the dock when you're playing at home?

This is pure speculation based on the that attachment patent that was talked about before.

I'm also more concerned with battery life being a portable. I love my DS's battery life, and I'm a little disappointed the 3DS's battery life couldn't match it.

I only does this in the sense that all handheld games can be now played as console games as well. This doesn't increase their output at all.

A hardware isn't going to increase their output, obviously. But it doesn't divide their resources.

A shared library could be huge. My biggest hope for the NX was for all those amazing franchises to get a home console version.

Imagine SMT V, next MonHun, Next Dragon Quest will all be made with a home console in mind (DQ11 already was but hey)

What? It effectively eliminates software droughts. No months-long Wii U droughts while 3DS gets games. No more 3DS droughts so Wii U gets games. Steady stream of releases for one system means no droughts.

Hmm maybe? The truth is the games for NX are going to become more expensive and take longer to make for handheld as well with higher specs than 3DS + home console mode. It will definitely help though.

So i was thinking about something and i wonder if this is possible or not. We know you can change the clock speed of a proc via software right. What if the NX has to different modes and can run faster when plugged on an power cord.

We know this is not so much a price, nor even size problem, as a battery problem that makes handled gaming limited. So what if they have like, a version of a strong gpu tha can runs at 500mhz when unplugged and 800mhz when plugged. I'm using random numbers but i wonder if this is a possibility.

I'll have a longer post later, but while I doubted it sometimes, this always struck me as the most likely result of Iwata's unified platform statements 2-3 years back, a la iPhone/iPad/Apple TV.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
I don't see it

it says this and nothing more. Can you give me the quote?

My bad--it was in the other article and they state the concept is the reverse of the Wii U.

That said, they have the tech to allow a handheld connection without cords. Makes no sense for the controller to have an AV port when the Wii U tech allows for lag free connection. Hook up the box via HDMI, controllers connect to box via Wii U streaming tech.

"Handle ports" does not mean "equal XB1 power," nor did I say that anywhere.

Is Zelda BotW designed with handheld sensibilities in mind?

What we will see is a unified library of all Nintendo's software. You will get console-like experiences and handheld-like experiences on one platform. Some franchise like Pokemon lean one way, others like Pikmin lean another.

Shall we wait until the actual reveal to start complaining about specifics such as design, power, price etc? Because right now nobody knows what it actually looks like and what's under the hood.
