I think Nintendo's new system would need to either be powerful enough to allow for ports of third-party games or be so cheap that people would buy it as a second console. I cannot imagine that an expensive console would sell well if it does not play all the major games that most gamers want to play.

As a consequence, given that NX' design does not sound like it will be able to handle big third-party games, Nintendo really needs to make it cheap. $200 sounds like the maximum they could get away with. And even that would be more than many people are willing to spend on a secondary gaming system.

So I won't expect any expensive hardware. The screen and the quality of the materials will probably be in the budget range. I also cannot imagine that they'd have enough budget left for gimmicks like a second GPU in the base station, large amounts of memory, and so on.

At the end of the day, we still have to consider that Nintendo's first party output is now flowing to one device that's crazy. And then consider all the usual Japanese third party suspects who are on Nintendo handhelds. The lineup could be killer.

I'll be able to play Monster Hunter on a portable and on a TV. It'll be like 3 Ultimate all over again, but without all the save transfers between systems.

Yeah, agreed. (It's a shame too, I like the concept)

I wonder if the two detachable controller sides wold be able to plug directly into each other for use when using the console hooked up to a tv. Would be a nice way to increase the longevity of the battery by not having to power a screen as well while in home console mode, which seemed to be a major problem with the gamepad on wii u.

I doubt you'll be able to connect only one of the side controllers, I imagine it'll look more like one of those smartphone 3rd party controllers:

MOGA-MFi-iPhone-controller-EVLeaks-001.png

Yes, I imagine something like that, except better and not that wide.

Part left and part right will be able to join and work as normal controller, while the display (with the cpu below) can be put in the dock, and play in the tv that way.

So will we have different price brackets for titles? $60 for a traditional home console experience and $30 for a light pick up and play mobile experience?

Here's another thing, since the NX is basically a handheld, kiss the hardware storage goodbye. At most we will have 128GB of storage and how large will the games be for those who go digital?
What if the larger hd is in the docking station and you just load the game you are currently playing in the handheld.

I just realized, it would be pretty cool if this supported Nvidia Gamestream, which isn't too far fetched.

Wait, imagine if this thing can stream PC games! I know the Shield can do it. I think Nintendo might have hinted (could be just me mixing up rumors) that the NX can potentially connect to other devices?

So if it's true that NX is getting Dragon Quest XI it probably won't be the PS4 version. If it's that underpowered it will probably an upscaled 3DS version.

Sounds like it isn't clamshell designed either, which means that in order for it to be portable you'll be walking around with three DS sized pieces. Gross

Just stick it in a neoprene sleeve. Works fine with Vita etc., and barely adds any size or weight. So unless you're one of those people always wearing baggy ass clothes with pockets that can fit a portable (especially a 3DSXL, because fuck the kiddy hand sized regular version and it's puny screen), it's a minor inconvenience at best and takes up little extra room in your bag/purse/briefcase.

May I have a cookie?
That seems the most likely scenario by far.
Wouldn't it be problematic to just overclock the handheld whenever it's connected to a TV without some cooling solution?
And assuming it would be, are there any external cooling solutions out there that are genuinely effective?

Just according to keikaku*

*keikaku means plan.

I'd look after one of my older posts where I stated it will be a hybrid and both mobile and stationary console will share the same games library, but I guess I share that with dozens of others here...

So. Long story short, I'll buy one. Because playing the next Zelda on my train rides is a real systemseller for me.

Here is what I think the dock does.

It just charges the system and is a HDMI passthrough

The portable unit itself has a 540p screen and is underclocked to save battery life. When in docked mode the unit itself overclocks to allow 1080p on the TV.

I like the sound of that.

Could sell the NX handheld for I don't know, 200-250 and the dock for $50-60? So you'd have a full-fledged home console in the 300 dollar range.

I'm in. Day One. Love the idea.

Knew it would be this, too! It was the only logical conclusion to the (admittedly few and far between) genuine leaks we had so far. If this thing can come in around the XB1 level of graphical power (ie ~1-1.5TFLOP) whilst staying under or around $300 I think it's a win.

Nintendo can focus all efforts on one device, most 3rd parties will likely be able to achieve relative parity between ports (for at least the next 2 years until Neo/Scorpio really take off) And the "gimmick" doesn't seem forced; It's relevant, adds value and I can see it being easy to market.

Flavour me cautiously excited :)

Also; sticking my neck out and saying the Tegra X1 in current kits is a placeholder for X2...

Edit: Beaten by article. Sounds like its currently actively cooled, which adds more creedance the the above theory of 'X2 placeholder'.

Guys... I... Can't think straight.

My head is spinning.

Is this device 2 player portable gaming per console? As in... The portable device sits on a table and each player grabs a controller?

I'm picturing a tablet-sized device here. Is that crazy?

I'm pleased enough that i won't have to buy all the doubled-up franchises anymore.

I've got no idea how they're going to design this thing to NOT look like a Wii U Gamepad though. For it to be comfortable in both configs, it has to be about the same size, so you're essentially looking at the same thing just with the sides cut off:

Gotta repurposes those parts somehow! Knowing their past marketing efforts, they'd probably walk right into an identity nightmare like this too.

It'd be better if the sides were identical and could attach left or right though - effectively including 2 simple controllers in the box.

Watch Nintendo put "Wii" in the name again

Nintendo is interested in selling games to you.

If this streams PC games I'll eat my hat buy it.

Nvidia screwed Microsoft in the original Xbox, Screwed Sony with PS3 GPU and now it's nintendo turn.

I swear Nintendo is like the most out of touch company in history, how hard can it be to produce a system that is plenty powerful (ensure 3rd party ports) plus having Nintendo priceless IPs. its not that hard nor that expensive BUT no...lets seek an already shrinking market (handhelds) and get some of that PHONE marketshare, guess what.... people buy smartphones to make calls first, browse internet second ...and maybe game on it third. NX is not a phone, won't sell like a phone and won't sell to hardcore either.

And in a few years we will have a post mortem on why NX failed, and we will hear that someone at Nintendo said that NX should sell a billion units like iphone 7 or whatever.

This echo of "it's not a home console" seems to a distinction without a difference. It seems we then may be in an era where these terms mean very little. If I can play it on my TV and by all indications it will have power better than a Wii U, it feels like its going to function as exactly that - a new home console. Whether every forum member agrees on that is moot. The added option of being able to get away from being in front of the TV helps as well and not having the limited range that the Wii U had.

That's not untrue. But if Nintendo is moving from two distinct platforms to one platform that can predominantly be characterised as a portable (that happens to have TV out), then this certainly is a matter of consolidation from two business lines to one, and I think of those two prior businesses it seems like handheld has the priority.

Maybe this isn't the full story, maybe there is in fact another separate dedicated home system. Or maybe the dock does make it a substantially different proposition at home. But if not, to me it feels like we're not getting a 'proper' home system next time around.

That's such a cool idea and theory.

we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.
What I get from this is that the screen is flanked on the left by the d-pad/analog stick and the right side by the face buttons and the two detatch and presumably reattach as one controller? The wording is so bad, I really need to see this thing because the most obvious way to do this would be to have it be a clamshell with the bottom detaching to form the controller.
