Well, how often do you expect Nintendo to bring out a title considering their development times on games if that is the bulk of the library? They don't have hundreds of studios! Every system needs third party support.

If they have all their teams working in a single piece of hardware the time between releases will be shorter than what happened with the Wii U and the 3DS.

In case any of you doubt the veracity of our own ShockingAlberto as a source, here is a PM I received from him yesterday evening.

He has given me permission to now post this. He also wanted me to mention nothing is confirmed until Nintendo confirms it.

Does he say anything about the docking station adding extra crunch (except from not needing to save battery life and thus increasing clocks)

Nintendo's art direction with lighting choices, etc., with Xbox One power, or there about?

Sounds good to me.

Sooo, how about that head of Nintendo saying, 'it is not a hybrid', lol?

I'm kind of happy with this as a concept

Lets hope the execution and price point don't ruin it

Edit: I guess no PS4/XB1 ports then?

This pretty much. Disappointed about the BC but it is to be expected. Hopefully Nintendo can pull it off and it can be really successful...

Game drought should be significantly improved by simply not having their internal studios supporting two different pieces of hardware.

Taking a look at the past generation, consider not having to spend time and money making an alternate Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and 3D Mario platformer.

When Nintendo saw people starting to do this, they knew exactly what they needed to do.

Bravo!

Edit: Next year they will reveal a Gear VR style attachment if VR is still a thing by then.

Seriously... with one device they could get:

- remove the control attachments - It's [kinda like] a phone!
- add the control attachments - It's a handheld!
- connect to the doc - It's a console!
- Connect VR attachment - It does VR!

Edit: Something else important to remember though is that it won't be as graphically powerful as today's modern smart phones... because this thing will cost $200-300 tops... not $800.

Well, this sounds incredibly stupid. There are people who have zero interest in a handheld, and vice-versa. No matter how advanced the technology may be, this hybrid will be an expensive handheld and a compromised console, not to mention having to fiddle with some bullshit dock when you get home and want to play on the big screen. If the whole point of this move was to focus on one development pipeline, they could have just made a separate handheld and console that play the same software.

Not saying this couldn't be successful, but good luck to Nintendo for selling this thing. Really disappointing if true or if there isn't a proper home console coming down the line.

i keep hearing about tegra x2. is this chip out? whats the specs? are there rumored specs if its not out yet? Is it confirmed to exist or just a good assumption?

It's a DF assumption based on a source telling them that the X1 they're currently using is actively cooled and makes a lot of noise, which shouldn't be the case for that GPU in a home console. The only way this makes sense is if it's overclocked because it's a placeholder for a newer, more powerful part (the Pascal-based Tegra X2 or whatever it's called), which would also explain the delay to march 2017.

I honestly think it makes sense and would also be in line with the comments about the console being around Xbox One in terms of power (X1 at 512gflops just isn't).

I'm excited for the prospects of a Monster Hunter on NX. Take on the go and play at home would be amazing. It was great palying between the 3DS MH3U and the WiiU. One version means there won't be a possibility of save corruption transferring between console and handheld..

With regards to power, I don't know what anyone else expected. Wii, Wii U, 3DS - Nintendo have shown that they really don't care about horsepower, Reggie even said as much at E3 (something along the lines of "were leaving it to Sony and MS to fight that out").

Nintendo's console will probably never be the one console if you want Western AAA 3rd party support, but that doesn't mean that it won't be worth owning at all.

Oddly enough I think 'WiiGO' would actually be a nice name, and fitting to the 'Wii Play' thought process, but after the confusion the WiiU caused and their total failure to differentiate it such a name would never happen.

Let's see what has really worked for Nintedo in the last 5 years:

Amiibo + Pokemon GO = AmiiGO

From a marketing perspective it makes 100% sense

I don't understand the complainers about graphics.

First, Tegra is adequate. We're not going to get blown up 3DS resolutions on this "handheld".

Secondly, I think we are in a time where graphics mean less and less compared to gameplay. Sure hardcore gamers will nitpick, but I don't understand why Nintendo should overprice their system and drive up development costs to appease some hardcore tech gamers.

And last, third parties haven't been giving Nintendo many ports for what feels like... forever? If you want to play the most jaw-dropping $100+ million AAA 3rd party game, go buy a Neo or Scorpio. If devs are excited about NX, a large part of that is likely because they won't be in an arms race for graphics, which can allow for a lot more risks and unique experiences.

To converge their console/handheld business is brilliant. The absolute worse thing they could do at this point is get into an arms race with MS and Sony, release another expensive system, and drown some more.

It's not about graphics. For developers and publishers it's about being able to sell your game on as many systems as possible without much additional development cost. For that, the target platform needs to provide a base level of performance. For consumers, it's about the value of having as many popular games on only one platform, instead of having to buy different platforms for different games. People might not even care that much about graphics. But if they want to play Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Fallout, or Grand Theft Auto, they will buy the platform that has these games, and developers will sell these games on the platforms that provide enough performance to allow for easy (= cheap) ports.

Nintendo is not in a "gameplay vs. graphics" competition. It is in a "Nintendo games vs. top-selling third-party games" competition. At least for those consumers, who only want to buy one platform, which will probably the majority.

Kii at it this being a hybrid. So many people swearing up and down it wouldn't be because of certain statements. Time and time again never trust what billion dollar companies say before they officially show their products.

I'm in for this!! As long as the console is on par with Wii U/slightly higher then it's good enough for me

Does this put to bed the rumors that Nintendo was taking a bit more time to look at VR?

Could be part of an upgraded dock with VR headset, but I believe them if they say they're not interested due to costs - or they have one eye on AR again with Pokemon Go's wild popularity

playstation tv?

playstation tv isn't handheld and portable afaik.
Seems like a nice try, probably won't be mass successful but as long it has nintendo first party it will be enough to keep it healthy unlike Vita. Depends on pricing though...

Ok, so on the one hand Nintendo positioned their already underpowered console in a market where the average device gets around 25% faster every year to go head to head with smart phones, on the other hand this thing has absolutely no chance against even the Xbone/PS4 let alone Scorpio/Neo. So in all honesty, WHAT IN THE FUCK NINTENDO?

Software sells hardware. Those smartphone might be getting faster yearly but the game selection blows. At least to me.

Agree with this.

... So expect no 3rd Party support, then? Got it.

It will have 3rd party support....just not in the form many of you want or expect. See above.

Might even see some XBL, PSN ports to it if its possible.

He didn't say to me. I guess he can answer that. if he knows.

I guess in the Eurogamer article we have no information on whether the docking station will boost performance?

This also might explain Nintendo's recent interest in Vulkan.

Given the world of a difference between the GPU capabilities of this and pretty much any of their previous hardware (in terms of programmability/compute etc.) and the fact that they want 3rd parties (and most crucially 3rd party engines) to support it quickly it would make sense to "roll your own" as little as possible in terms of API.

This sounds intriguing, and is pretty much exactly what I expected (or hoped) they would be doing. I think it’s a smart move on Nintendo’s part, but they will really need to brand and market this thing right this time, hopefully they take all of the Wii-U lessons seriously.

This is going to be a bust. It's not going to attract console gamers who want a powerful console with full third party support, it's not going to appeal to people who want to play games on the go because they'll go with their smartphone. All this new hybrid console does is consolidate Nintendo's two shrinking markets. This device perhaps solves Nintendo's dwindling market share problem, it wasn't created from a consumer's perspective.

Consolidating their markets is exactly what they needed to do. Now their software teams can focus on one platform, one market, and they will no longer be divided between doing portable games and console games. Ideally this will translate into more Nintendo games being made at a much higher rate. That will be super key if they want the NX to succeed, they HAVE to output more games faster.

I’m tentatively looking forward to seeing this NX on the market. Hell, even though I’m primarily a PC gamer I might even consider buying one of these if they do it right.
