Obligatory gloat post... it's what I thought all along &ect

Seems like the smartest move. Portables are nintendo's bread and butter while the market is contracting to the point of non existence outside of Japan and the age <12 demographic. So goldblum there it is .gif

Personally I'm somewhat sold. Wii U couldn't sell me because the tablet was only local remote play (and I think many were in this boat) and I don't care for graphics when it comes to console. As long as it's not gimped relative to 3DS when it was released

How else are people gonna compare third party titles for true console warz?!

I have a gaming PC. I'm glad Nintendo take a different path.

Is nintendo making a hybrid to gain more $$$ from you by buying a hardware somehow enhancing youre gaming experience?

So we just accepted Nintendo will never be a major player in the console market? best they can hope for is some people getting it as a second console instead of being the main one?

So why we should be happy about it again?

because this time around you only have to buy 1 Nintendo console to get all of their games, rather than buy a handheld and home console. Basically you pay less, and get more games.

Nothing wrong with being the best secondary console out there

So, technically, this is the end for Nintendo home consoles? It was obvious in the past two generations too, but it seems that they just don't care for the competition anymore and they do their own thing. I think I like the idea of a hybrid system.

"Nintendo Go" would probably confuse the public into thinking it has anything to do with Pokémon Go or mobile gaming. They didn't care about confusing people with 3DS, 2DS, WiiU, etc, but they would care about this.

I'll take my crow with mustard, please.

Alright, a few thoughts:

1) Moving all eggs into one basket is risky... but it does simplify things for consumers. The No BC thing probably means a whole new branding (not a DS, not a Wii).

2) The Tegra X1 is actually more powerful than the Wii U, so even without the dock it should easily run Wii U ports.

3) The Tegra X1 is one of the few mobile GPUs that can run Unreal Engine 4 with all features (aka: not using the mobile renderer). With the screen being 720 at most and if it has at least 4GBs of RAM, UE4 ports should be doable with reduced textures.

4) Those controllers seem more like an evolved wiimote+nunchuk for me: you hold each half in each hand. I bet they have motion sensors and probably even IR pointing capabilities. That would enable Just Dance on the go, for example.

5) Considering the thermal envelope of the Tegra X1, this is probably going to be between 6" and 8", which puts it in small tablet territory. If you think about it, the NX automatically becomes the best tablet for games in the market, specially if Nintendo lowers development barriers. People talk about how smartphone gaming is ravaging the market, but most kids are given tablets, not phones, to game on. There might be a place for Nintendo there.

Really hope they call it Nintendo Go.

"You can even play Pokemon Go on it!"

They miiiiiight get my money, really curious to see how it turns out.
I guess they'll have the console and the dock separately, but also a D1 bundle?

if by "apeshit" you mean "keep playing games on mobile", then yeah.

the days of Japan going apeshit over any traditional video game systems, consoles or handhelds, is over.
3DS is the 3rd best selling "console" ever in Japan. 2nd if you seperate GB by console generations. 3DS outsold NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 and Wii in Japan and this during the mobile boom.

I think you're being premature here. While mobile gaming is huge in Japan, handhelds are still very viable even if the audience is reduced from last gen. It's basically equivalent to home consoles in the west, still very viable even if we've had a contraction.

the most shocking part here is they are going with carts and the second is the Tegra, only had bad experience with the Tegra chipsets and their shitstastic performance since the Tegra 2-4 days

still for all the shit nvidia talked about consoles and what not here we are, it is gonna be interesting how everything pans out

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...-mobile-games-machine-powered-by-nvidia-tegra
But the real question is this - what if the Tegra X1 hardware is completely divorced from its current Android underpinnings and paired up with direct, low-level access? If you're looking for an example of the revelatory upgrade to perceived performance this can have, consider the glory days of PlayStation Vita - Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout 2048, Gravity Rush, and yes, a range of impressive PS3 ports. These were all powered by a downclocked version of the same GPU found in the iPad 3 and judged by today's standards, it's positively ancient technology. However, even to this day, it's hard to find a mobile shooter with anything like the technical sophistication of Guerrilla Cambridge's impressive Killzone: Mercenary.

You can´t simply compare your Android Tegra experiences with Tegra in a handheld. And it could be X2 so, we don´t know how it could perform.

WHAT the, how that makes sense!? This goes against what Iwata said.
hell it goes against what Emily Rogers said, and other developers i think.

Edit: i still think there is going to be two configurations.

So if I'm understanding the graphics comparisons correctly, Nintendo is taking a half gen leap from Wii U. That means at the end of the NX's cycle, it will be 1.5 generations behind the competition instead of 1 generation behind like it has been since Wii launched in 2006.

Who really cares anymore. Nintendo's games looked great in HD. And now they will only look better.

Before seeing this:
iyk68.jpg

I was expecting two full sized controllers that slot into the system, the ABXY would be poking out one side and the dpad would be poking out the other. It does make me wonder if they have motion controls though? These look ideal for Just Dance while docked.

Sorry if this has been covered, I'm late to the thread.

Nvidia screwed Microsoft in the original Xbox, Screwed Sony with PS3 GPU and now it's nintendo turn.

I swear Nintendo is like the most out of touch company in history, how hard can it be to produce a system that is plenty powerful (ensure 3rd party ports) plus having Nintendo priceless IPs. its not that hard nor that expensive BUT no...lets seek an already shrinking market (handhelds) and get some of that PHONE marketshare, guess what.... people buy smartphones to make calls first, browse internet second ...and maybe game on it third. NX is not a phone, won't sell like a phone and won't sell to hardcore either.

And in a few years we will have a post mortem on why NX failed, and we will hear that someone at Nintendo said that NX should sell a billion units like iphone 7 or whatever.

The rumor from Semi-Accurate was that because of this history and Nvidia being shut out of the console market in the latest generation, they were desperate to get a win and that they gave Nintendo the mother of all sweetheart deals (or Nintendo sensed blood and took them to the cleaners depending on your perspective).

What about the ergonomics and size though? This thing might be bulky as all hell due to the controllers.

I'm imagining this to be the OG Xbox of handhelds.

So the dock.

It's going to be sold separately isn't it? At least that's what I expect, knowing Nintendo. It's not necessary for the handheld to function, and they can make an extra buck.

It's possible but that would be a horrible idea, considering the main selling point of NX is likely going to be that you can now buy one device and play Nintendo games any way you'd like. Be it on your TV or on the go.

They should just sell one SKU with as few accessories as possible to make things simple.

This is my dream. Being able to play all Nintendo games on a portable, and never having to play a Nintendo game on tv is a dream come true. Nothing else I can say except I have never hoped that a rumor was true so much before.

If its more powerful than WiiU I am terrified by the price tho lol.

That whole "portable and home console in one box" is worrying me for a reason. it could lead to bad design decisions and limitations when they could honestly do something like that:

Portable NX >> 199$
Perfect all around portable with great autonomy. Has a chargeable dock.

NX TV (yeaaah in know peple will try to tell me it would then have the same sucess as a vita tv, like there is anything in common between a vita has to offer and Nintendo software) >> 99$
Adds a hard drive, more ram, a tv out and a classic controller. Plugs into the NX portable dock. Plays every NX games at 1080p cause of the RAM expansion and the procs running at bigger speed (no battery issue).

Boom, it's simple. Play our incredible portable games that looks like no portable game ever on the NX. Play them on your tv when you want, with a perfect controller for a total of 299$ (279$ in a bundle!)

I mean without that they need complex mechanics with the control and nobody will be really happy with it.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Huh? The 3DS when it launched was $249 and this is way more tech focused than that. And Nintendo isn't looking to sell hardware at a loss so we'll see. I think at least $299 is more likely but really who knows.

lol....the 3DS hardware was a PoS - the 3D screens were expensive the rest was just garbage. X1 powered handheld would be a way bigger portable jump than whatever month of fame the 3DS had before the Vita was shown.

PS4 and XB1 will recieve price drops next year, who will buy a Nintendo home console with no 3rd party support .

Who was buying Xbox's after the shitfest unveiling and lead up to launch? I guess lots of people because Microsoft showed games at E3.

Nintendo needs to have a smart unveiling, show the box show games, show their digital library, show some kind of Nintendo service that lets you have access to NES/SNES ETC GAMES.

But this device just killed any hope for me.

Right, I've thought about it and I'm putting my money on a Tegra "X2" (ie next generation of X1, which is FinFET I believe), which is down-clocked when in "mobile" mode to bring the power consumption to sensible levels allowing for a reasonable battery life when playing ~WiiU level games on the built in 540p screen.

When you plug the sucker in to a TV (and obviously, mains power), the full clock speed is available etc meaning the game can be rendered at a higher framerate, higher resolution, better graphics etc etc yadda yadda. I reckon somewhere around XBOne level of 'on-paper' performance.

I think Eurogamer's speculation on this whole thing might well have some plausibility. But of course it is just speculation right now.

That would be my thought, but who knows.

Can someone enlighten me on how this is a hybrid? From what I'm reading it's just a handheld with a TV dock. If it were an actual hybrid then the "dock" portion of it would be more significant.

Add a TV dock to the PSP or 3DS and they don't suddenly become hybrid systems. Plus, as I recall the GBA had a dock that attached to the GCN that wasn't considered any sort of hybrid. How is this really any different other than the fact the dock comes packaged with it?

As someone who isn't a fan of mobile gaming, this is a huge disappointment. That said, if the games are good, it has a normal controller, and the price is reasonable, I might still get one and just leave it in the dock.

Sounds intriguing. I'm having a hard time visualizing a lot of it, such as how the system will actually look, how the controllers will look, how big it will be, etc.

Looking forward to the official reveal to see how it actually looks in action. I'm also curious what the official name will end up being too.

So NX with X1 chip would have 0.51, XB1 1.31 and PS4 1.81 teraflops.

Wii U has half of NX, am I correct?

There's no way the final build is running an X1. They are actively cooling (read: overclocking) the dev kits. This almost mandates a beefier end result chip that is more efficient.

Seems 16nm (or X2-custom) is all but definite now and may well explain why this thing delayed into 2017 rather abruptly.

Sounds in line with what a lot of people were expecting. It sounds interesting on paper, but I'm sure Nintendo has thought of some ways to take advantage of this concept in their software.

I wonder how digital downloads are going to work. There's no way they're going to put 500GB+ of flash storage in the console, so is it going to have a hard drive? In the controller, stuffed in there with the battery and all the hardware? They could have you connect external HDDs by USB, of course, but then say goodbye to gaming on the go. SD expansion cards aren't going to take you far with full console-sized games.

Touch screen?
Expected these days. Causes a problem if using it in conjunction with TV but not a huge deal. Maybe the controllers work as pointing wands again!
Think they could support a touch only line for use without the controllers, supporting their full mobile lineup & friends.

Not a fan of this, guess it means a neo is more likely now.

Hopefully this is just there handheld version and they've got a console version coming the year after (same specs as scorpio).
