if by "apeshit" you mean "keep playing games on mobile", then yeah.
the days of Japan going apeshit over any traditional video game systems, consoles or handhelds, is over.
If this gets Monster Hunter though...oh boy...

Sounds like it, yes. But the article is badly written.
It can if they stopped adding gimmicks. Look how much hype came from the NES re-release console coming this fall. People want it, they remember Nintendo.
Keep your message, and your console simple and people will flock to it. It's the reason Sony is doing so well. It's not complicated to wrap your head around.
Nintendo have this habbit of wanting to innovate hardware all the time, but by the time they do everything tech wise has already passed them. The Wii, DS I'll give you that were ahead of the curb. But releasing a hybrid will either sell like hot cakes depending on what it can do, or it will fizzle out.
So if I'm understanding the graphics comparisons correctly, Nintendo is taking a half gen leap from Wii U. That means at the end of the NX's cycle, it will be 1.5 generations behind the competition instead of 1 generation behind like it has been since Wii launched in 2006.
This should be added to the opening post to calm some people down until we get more information. Some people think Tegra graphics are :

Announcing in September ??? What gaming events are happening in September ??
that would be great, yes. What about the dock mechanism? Is that a form of the Supplementary Computer Device? If so then I can see this Announcement being huge

Nintendo Go.
Calling it.
Go is five in Japanese, this being their 5th generation handheld. Also, makes sense to capitalise on the Pokemon Go mindshare.
At least since it's a handheld it shouldn't be more than $200
Yeah, I don't like the idea of a detachable controller. They should make it as portable and pocket-friendly as possible with integrated controls and have a separate controller a la Fire TV.I think that depends on the form factor / portability. If any of these mock ups are anything to go by..
If this gets Monster Hunter though...oh boy...
I hate this. I don't want a beefy handheld. I don't want any handheld.
A 2017 console being less powerful than the XB1 is dogshit.
is to be applied to this rumor.

Do people really want 3 consoles exactly the same?
Right, I've thought about it and I'm putting my money on a Tegra "X2" (ie next generation of X1, which is FinFET I believe), which is down-clocked when in "mobile" mode to bring the power consumption to sensible levels allowing for a reasonable battery life when playing ~WiiU level games on the built in 540p screen.
When you plug the sucker in to a TV (and obviously, mains power), the full clock speed is available etc meaning the game can be rendered at a higher framerate, higher resolution, better graphics etc etc yadda yadda. I reckon somewhere around XBOne level of 'on-paper' performance.
I think Eurogamer's speculation on this whole thing might well have some plausibility. But of course it is just speculation right now.
Prediction: Nintendo is going to use a custom Chip based on the Tegra X, not just a simple X1 or X2. And the docking is going to have another GPU, the handheld alone is around 300-400Gflops, whit the docking 1-1.5 Tflops.
Is the plan for NX to takeover the DS? Or will the DS continue on as it is?
MS is "floundering" because that market is firmly entrenched in the Sony and PC camps at the moment. I swear some of you sound like you just woke up after being in cryosleep since 1996. Nintendo doesn't have the cache with the market that is currently buying PS4s and gaming on PCs. Hell Microsoft actually does and, as you said, they are floundering. That day some of you have been dreaming about when 18 - 35 year old "dude bros" drop their Playstations and Xboxes because they want to play Zelda and Mario Kart and restore order to the gaming universe is never coming. I'm glad Nintendo seems to be realizing this even if you aren't.
Maybe a standard one and a more advanced one for hardcore gamers? So the dock.
It's going to be sold separately isn't it? At least that's what I expect, knowing Nintendo. It's not necessary for the handheld to function, and they can make an extra buck.

Would it be fair to assume that the Handheld portion would get a boost in performance when docked for home console use? I could see it helping with the cost of the screen if need be. Where it could run games at say slightly sub 720p on the Screen but when docked the performance boost would allow for better resolutions and graphic performance?
It's not a watch
It's a wearable
It's not a watch though

This may surprise you...the Wii U has 1080p games.
Nintendo will never again be a graphical powerhouse.

I'll buy it as long as re4 gets ported to it.

You know what, you've sold me. I change my mind about this needing to be called "Nintendo" or "Nintendo Entertainment System."That.... would be perfect.
That's what I'm thinking. Maybe games can run up to 1080p once you hook it up to your TV.
Even if they used proprietary APIs before, given the massive architectural shift in terms of hardware it would make sense to make a clean cut to something Vulkan-like (or Vulkan full stop) -- also in order to more quickly get third party toolchains up and running on their system.I wonder if they will actually use Vulkan or did Nintendo us proprietary API's for Wii & Wii-U?

The 3DS didn't come close to the DS. So yeah.Monster Hunter and Yokai Watch would be good for Japan, yeah.
still don't think it would sell even close to the 3DS, ultimately.
