Was kinda interested at first, but thinking it over...I dont feel like carrying another device around with me. Been playing a TON of PoGo, but that's mainly because its on my phone (first time I've ever been into a mobile game as well). Now I look at the Vita/3DS in my home, and they've been collecting dust for a while now...

I guess I'm just not the targeted demographic.

This. So dissapointed so far if this ends up being true wich it seem like it : / I appreciate Nintendo's effort on always bring something new to the table but this new concept seems a bit unnecesary IMO.

Think of families as the target market. Long car ride? Awesome. Passenger commute to work? Perfect. At home? Continue playing the same game on your TV.

This thing is going to be popular enough to keep Nintendo going. Bring on the games!

the way I see it

If 10k and SMD are indeed right then the full reveal would have to talk about BOTH SKUs

If they dont then I say we can safely assume the hybrid is the flagship

So basically i have to spend 300 $ to buy a single piece of overpriced hardware if i want to play only on my TV? And i have a console that's basically a robot cartoon from the '70s with 20 different pieces that go in one another.

Why not simply make 2 consoles with the same concept ?? Like have a tegra based portable underclocked at 0.2-0.3 Gflops and a home console going 6-7 times that (no battery issues)?? Then i could get a cheaper, faster home console, without ten thousand piece of plastics going around and less restricted by the portable design. Good luck winning any kind of market with a 300 $ portable. If Nintendo just had the portable at 200 and the home at 250, they'd make people who want just a portable happier (since they'd spend less, would have a better form factor , less attachable parts etc...) and people who want a home happier since they'd have a simpler console that cost quite a bit less (no screen, no attachable parts etc...) with better performances.

Who the fuck want to have to buy two in one ? You can have all the benefits of the shared library without having a frankstein of a portable console that can be connected to your TV.

Gaming on the go!

Too bad I have to drive everywhere. I like gaming on my couch. Or in my comfy office chair. I also really like Mario games and the like, but I just can't get excited about this. After the Wii-U, actually releasing a new device that's less powerful... I just can't support that. I've never been a hand held guy, so I'm happy for you DSers, but I'm out. At least most I don't have to buy a new system to get the better version of the new Zelda!

I am curious

Where are you getting your information from

No your confused because you didn't read the context of the post I responded to, suggesting that those questioning physical media coupled with portable devices in 2016 "didn't know shit".

I don't make the news, I just report it.

Look around you next time you're in public and try to spot the number of people actually using physical media with their portable devices. I'll be over here waiting.

Point is, that's fine if you've no issue with carts/sd cards or whatever for a new electronic device in 2016. There are likely many others like you as well.

However, if you're not cognizant that ALL forms of physical media are a dead or dying phenomena, then you're the one who is blind. There's a reason why there are no more CD/Record Stores anymore. Why Blockbuster and such have all gone bankrupt. Why new cars don't ship with CD players standard anymore.

People are simply accustomed to carrying a single device that has all their media digitally stored for instant access, be it music, movies, tv shows, Netflix, YouTube, games, podcasts, books or whatever.

So introducing a cart/sd cart format in the modern age is going to come off as dated to modern consumers no matter how unruffled you may be about it. It's just where we're at on this particular technological timeline.

It's not going to come off as dated at all. People still like using "cartridges" in their smartphones right now to expand their data to store their music, photos, etc. You ever see those threads online of people complaining of phone x not having a micro sd card slot? I've seen plenty of them.

You have to have options. We aren't fully ready for an all digital system for large sized games. Some people have data caps, slow internet, etc and also being able to buy used games is still a huge thing. You need physical media for games still so you can provide options to your user base. Either buy digital or physical. You need both and the most logical solution in today's world is to have a gaming system that uses flash memory aka cartridge.

DId I misread the Digital Foundry article? I thought it said it was more powerful than Wii U.

I just hope and pray that the tablet in the middle is at least a decent all-around device for media consumption and browsing. Maybe even Android like the earliest rumors?

A Nintendo Android console would change a lot

Would it be able to sideload APKs?
Would the games themselves be APKs?

Theyve already had a bit of a partnership with Google in Pokemon Go

No BC according to the article.

I wasn't talking about backwards compatibility. I was talking about Nintendo having one platform vs two and concentrating the flow of titles into one system. That's stunning stuff right there.

It's replacing both the 3DS and the Wii U. That's one hell of a deal for me given that between the two of them they're all I play anymore.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
If this is launching in March, not really. Having a single SKU during that time will be fine.

During its first holiday, yeah, having a handheld only version might be ideal. Assuming they even go this route. I could honestly see Nintendo sticking with a single retail option.

Families aren't gonna need duplicate setups. You might want 3 handhelds, but families aren't gonna want to pay an extra $100 per unit for all of the TV shit that they need just one of.

I speak of this as the person in this exact situation fyi.

This concept really fits the bill for me. The majority of my gaming is on the go and when I do game at home I alternate very frequently with my wife wanting to watch TV (which the WiiU has already mitigated). This concept means I can play any of my library seemlessly whether I'm on the go, at home, or if my wife is using the TV.

With a WiiU/3DS setup, it was a completely different ecosystem when I went from one console to another. The style of game, the level of engagement, etc. Sometimes I would get hooked into a game on my WiiU and then lament Not being able to play it while traveling. At other points, I would be really laying into a 3DS game and would have loved to have moved it to the big screen.

Tl;dr: No complaints here. I'm there day 1.

Kind of sounds like they just ditched the home console market. Not sure how I feel about that, but I'm more willing to buy a powerful handheld than another gimped home console from them.

I want the handheld to be usable in my hand when I'm docked to the TV. Maybe wiiU style streaming to the dock. That way I can use the touchscreen controls and have the option of a second screen for asymmetric games

Agreed.

Not to mention 3DS/DS ports/remasters.

It got me thinking. I remember the WiiU being praised for its near-perfect console-gamepad communication. The lagless video flux they have achieved to transmit is something I believe that is yet to be replicated in other "remote play" technologies. With the experience they have collected with the WiiU, it's only logical to have it applied again here, except this time in reverse (the "gamepad" sending to the base).

Are there any rumours of this thing running an android based OS? I mean, it would be kinda cool if it could also play Pokemon GO and any other game that Nintendo puts out on mobile.

His quote and today's reveal has me questioning the whole idea of a hybrid.

What defines a hybrid?

Is it a handheld with TV out?

Is it a handheld with controller support?

Is it a handheld that plays console games?

Is it a handheld that can become a console once docked?

How do you define HYBRID? What was Iwata's definition of a hybrid? What is ours?

Re:
From a Nintendo perspective, we clearly have strength here in the Americas, we have strength in Europe and we have strength in Japan. That isn’t necessarily true of some of our more direct competitors. We’ve also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that’s another element we’ll be talking about much later.

This isn't a home console, what about the heart rate sensor? Also didn't i read first you could plug a controller in it. Now again you have real small not comfortable controllers that you can detached. Like wii remote that nobody liked to play on as a standalone controller.

Not buying it.

I'm sticking to my "I don't believe a word out of anyone's mouth other than Nintendo" on this thing. NX has been rumored to be about 1000 different concepts at this point. It's just getting ridiculous.

Yeah because I was totally referring to the past market trends in my post...

...totally
I dunno, I know the market for handheld is shrinking but even the new Nintendo 3ds sold atleast 7.5 million as of February I think and that is just an upgraded 3DS. Im sure quite a few people who still use their 3DS didnt feel the need to upgrade to the new version. So I imagine this will atleast do better than the Wii U.

I find myself moving more anr more away from portables. I had a DS and PSP last gen and have a Vita this time. However I get annoyed whenever I'm forced to use it. I'd much rather play Cold Steel II on my PS4 instead of the Vita.

If this is true this appears to be a glorified portable, and not a console. Hopefully I'm wrong since Zelda looks so good. I may end up playing it on Wii U instead.

Most families aren't going to be purchasing three of NXs in March. Nintendo can easily get away with having a single SKU with all the hardware components during that time period.

If NX takes off then yeah, I could see a handheld-only option being offered in the future.

This seems to be the under appreciated part of this whole thing, if true. Between their handheld and console output, Nintendo could easily allocate resources to self-support a single platform, even if third party support is minimal. It really allows them to streamline their gaming business.

Not liking the sound of this device to be honest. I remain sceptical until we see the official unveil but looks like I'll be skipping Nintendo console hardware again for another generation at this point. Turn me around Nintendo and colour me surprised.

1. Who confirmed that the Nintendo NX Development Kits are working with an Tegra X1?

2. Could it be possible for Nintendo to change to the Tegra X2, or would this be already to late because of final production of the Nintendo NX SKU's and the worldwide launch of the Nintendo NX in March 2017?

3. How credible is the source Eurogamer?

Are there any rumours of NX [insert anything here] and the answer is yes. If you read the article though they insist that it has a Nintendo custom build OS.
