So it was a hybrid. I was right about everything so far except for the fact that they will bundle both form factors. Hopefully they will release a standalone handheld revision in November next year at a cheaper price.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but why are people treating Eurogamer like word of God? This is a rumor, not confirmation. "Multiple sources" isn't enough. And what I have seen reported sounds convoluted and confusing, which is the last thing Nintendo needs right now.

I'm not sure whether I want buttons under the screen or not. No buttons at all and just a screen could mean possible phone functionality. And since all phones are basically the same nowadays I could see myself using it. If it's just the screen with no phone capabilities... having two devices that are just screens on me all the time sounds dumb.

On the other hand having the home button right beneath the screen sounds very beneficial for video games, its main purpose. Man, Nintendo has to solve a lot of problems with this.

Say goodbye to competent ports of big games like COD:AW (48GB), with cartridges that only have 32GB capacity, not to mention the hit in visuals.

I dont' think there's reason at this point to believe 32GB would be some kind of hard cap. 64 won't cost much more, especially by next year.

There are plenty of reasons the types of games you're talking about probably won't come, having nothing to do with storage space. :(

Everyone? No.

There was only a small handful of us in #teamhybrid and we were pretty consistently shot down by the majority of posters who defied logic to believe this wouldn't be the case.

Main reason "But Iwata said no hybrid!"

Despite #teamhybrid posting proof of the fact that Nintendo has said one thing and done another FOR EVER.
Yup, every single time

Slick, but a complete waste of money for people who like home console gaming and couldn't give two shits about handheld gaming.

It's not like it's going to have a top notch screen or anything, so I doubt it will drive the cost up. I'd be shocked it launched for more than $250-300. So it will come in at less than Wii U launch price so I don't see why console only folks would feel ripped off of they rarely used the portable functionality.

Hell, if anything the portable only folks are paying more for the dick they don't need assuming it has power boosting features that add cost.

yeah battle dojo is not indicative of the main game. they gimped it specifically with that in mind. never mind that the pro controller doesn't have a gyro which is a crucial aspect of splatoon.

Ain't like the NX can't get a stand alone controller with gyros in. PS4 pad has it. Steam controller has it. It's an inexpensive addition compared with doing the two screen thing again.

Can't say I'm shocked. September release is odd after them saying march.

September is when they're planning on officially unveiling it, not when they plan to release it. As far as we know, they're still sticking to the March release date, which I imagine will get clarified more at the unveiling.

Even assuming this rumour is all completely true, I'd still expect an 'NXTV' standalone home console before too long.

Yea, a handful of the same posters would post that as a way to day that #teamhybrid were being stupid. Shockingly I don't see them posting in here today. ;)

Pro controller works well and a lot of people disable gyro anyway. I can't stand playing the game with the awful gyro controls.

like I said, they gimped battle dojo with the pro controller in mind. there's no super jumping, specials work differently, stuff like that. also that the vast majority of splatoon players (~70%) use the gyro controls. the gyro controls were a big part of its success because they're a more intuitive control scheme for aiming and made the game more accessible as a result. of course there are some really great players who only use the right stick but that doesn't negate what I just mentioned.

I'm expecting a gyro in the NX, would be foolish not to have it

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
So your disappointed you can't spend more money on two systems and now have to spend less on a 2in1?

Probably will also miss to have to buy Smash Bros. on two different systems as well as to pay twice for Virtual Console games /s

A whole month of speculation until the official reveal is gonna kill me. :(

Just drop something Nintendo. You can still have your fancy reveal event in September.

The Good: Unified console and handheld library which means games, games, and more games with more frequent releases.

The Bad: Not the graphic leap many hoped and dreamed for. Brilliant move for portable loving Japan, but not so much for mobile gaming North America.

The Ugly: Say goodbye to competent ports of big games like COD:AW (48GB), with cartridges that only have 32GB capacity, not to mention the hit in visuals.

Figured it would be a hybrid, and the library potential makes me excited. Just not crazy about the possibility of dealing with a lack of 3rd party support again. However, 3DS still has 3rd party support and this is technically still a portable. Ugh... My poor brain.
it's almost a 100% guarantee there will be card sizes greater than 32 gigabytes. cart sizes expanded from where they were on launch on the n64, ds, and 3ds.

It's a different kind of fugly. Mildly more tolorable. Better than the "putting lipstick on a pig" philosophy that permeates PC hardware design.
There's no such thing as "PC hardware design" as in one monolithic entity or style. This is what my PC looks like. Maybe I'm biased, but I don't see pigs or lipstick there, just something which has high build quality, great materials, and solid design.

I'd be happy if this NX hybrid even comes close in any of these aspects (to be fair, it's likely to be a lot more price constrained).

It will be interesting to see the line-up Nintendo can produce with only one platform to support.
Hopefully Capcom will release a Monster Hunter for it.

Is my phone also a hybrid system?

Can your phone be used exclusively as a home console?

Then no.

This thing will behave as a true home console when docked. It'll boot up via the controllers and will turn off via the controllers. It'll boot straight to its OS dedicated to gaming and navigate via the controllers.

Your phone doesn't do this.

so if this sells for full "console" price ($299ish) what will happen in multi-gamer households? You have to come up with a "share the portable game time" schedule? "i'm home sick i'll play Zel...oh shit! my brother took it with him"

just seems strange...

i like the idea...but this is where i get stuck thinking it's also a bad idea...
This is what I'm worried about. That and the fact that Nintendo will no longer be developing specifically for a "home console", unless they have another trick up their sleeve like the dock being an SCD.

32GB is the recommended cart size. 64 and 128GB carts will also likely be availiable. However using reduced textures should help make games smaller

Isn't 32 GB cartridges a bit small considering that so many games are having a hard time with 50 GB discs?

How many Nintendo games have a hard time with 50 GB discs? Porting games for this is basically out the window for most 3rd parties anyway.

One thing I just thought of, if the controllers detach, does that mean there are 3 batteries (or at least 2)? That seems not elegant and kind of expensive.

Quite the contrary, the majority of Splatoon players use gyro controls.

I think I read something about 70% of splatoon players using gyro. Even counting people who don't know they can turn it off I would classify 30% of players turning it off as "a lot".

Are Nintendo's games having trouble with it? I don't really think they give a fuck about anyone else's games.

As a matter of fact, Monolith Soft did run into a fair few problems getting Xenoblade X to fit on a Wii U game disc, even with just one spoken language to contend with. The Wii U allegedly never supported dual layer game discs, so everyone was stuck with 25 GB.

It works well enough. When you get into higher levels of play it becomes akin to using a joystick vs kb/m in PC shooters. While gyro it is not quite as big a gap as a kb/m, it is still a gap. That said, a regular controller can still do gyro and the touch screen features of Splatoon people are mentioning that need the gamepad don't really need the gamepad screen at all. If there was really a hardcore competitive scene for Splatoon it would be very unlikely people would be using twin sticks.

And I think I've mentioned this in other rumor or BOTW threads, but can't say I'm not somewhat disappointed in the power if this was a dedicated home console. But if this is hybrid and still performs better than the Wii U this is great news. I'm taking the no backwards compatibility as no Wii U BC. I'm expecting ports of Wii U games though, and hoping for handheld BC.

They should still be worried about Sony.

Sony understands what's happening in Japan, and while the PS4 is selling well now, they'll eventually have to come up with an answer to the changing climate there. If NX is a hit, Sony will pull a full rip & run there at the end of the PS4/Neo cycle.

Why would Sony do that ?
Sony will just care less about Japan than they do now .
Sony is not going to give up the rest of the world for a dying market .
