Disney Infinity server shutdown announced

The customer base didnt out grow the characters. People in there 30 still love nintendo, i cant say the same for disney. So adults are willing to buy amiibos to collect the figures.

I'm pretty sure that there are people in their 30's that love Star Wars and Marvel superheroes.....not to mention some of the classic cartoons.

That stuff arguably has broader appeal than Amiibos.

I have no idea why Disney couldn't make this work -- it seems like they just lost interest.

Hope someone does a list of great community levels to go and download before 9/30.

Still bummed out about this whole thing, the game was just starting to spread its wings.

ATV and Windows Store versions won't even be playable at all anymore? Christ.

I guess DI 2.0 is affected by this? I was about to plunge on the Star Wars stuff, but not if Toy Box is gutted.

Toy box online features are gutted, you will still be able to play any toy box you had made, make in the future or fully downloaded to your HDD.

That's my understanding anyways.

Im a bit glad i focused mostly on marvel figures and battlegrounds because i wanted it as part of my selection of party fighting games, that plus toybox take over is enough to keep me going back to the game.

Rumor has it they over produced certain characters they thought would sell well (like Hulk) and despite the fact that they sold well, they over stocked ET for the Atari style and the storage of the left over figures was draining money. Also apparently the selection of what characters could be made figures was controlled not by what the market wanted but what the execs wanted (example cited Marvel holding on the Guardians of the Galaxy unless Yondu was added to cross promote the movie, causing the production of a figure very few people wanted).

Unless its on PC, then at some point your game disc becomes a coaster? Reason I don't support multiplayer heavy/only games. Way to many times they end up with closed servers, and making them unplayable. I mean, its not like these games are F2P. They cost money, specially DI with all the fucking figures you have to buy.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival told a good lesson to Nintendo to never ever make an Amiibo only game.
I'm quite thankful this game bombed hard after the hint of a real AC game (the Plaza)

I think it told a good lesson to never ever make a terrible amiibo-only game.

It would still be trash if it didn't use amiibo, period - and I say that as someone that still breaks it out from time to time as a time-waster.

Nintendo's biggest problem with amiibo is that they a) didn't have a good, dedicated game or series of games and b) didn't really do enough in the way of cross-pollination for several of the lines. The Smash line has basically been the best line w.r.t. their uses and cross-line uses (which is still pretty shallow) and the others have been way too narrow/limited in focus for the TTL piece to matter.

Also, I'm still waiting for that Robin/Lucina NA reprint run, dammit. Even if it means I'll miss it on the 1st Run.

It's still functional. Literally everything is there but online so no online MP, no downloading or uploading content.
It's not a huge deal if you just grab the content you want before servers shut down.

By PC version they mean the Free to play PC version you could punch codes of your figures to play on the pc without the need of the physical figure or a portal, Steam version is a digital version of the retail one, that will continue to work just like the console versions.

You got me on the Apple tv one (it was actually sold on retail), but the Windows 8/10 version is the F2P one im talking about, it's actually called "Disney infinity 3.0 play without limits" to differentiate from the retail one.

They expected to sell at an unreasonable rate honestly. Over production is a bitch.

Can't believe some versions will stop working altogether. At least that's how I'm reading the Apple TV and Windows versions. Even if it's losing you money, you've made a commitment to your customers.

With Disney Infinity (OG), they under-produced, causing shortages. They knee jerked with 2.0 and then over-produced. I'd read at one point that like 2 million hulk figures were produced but only 1 million sold. So a lot of unsold stock laying around and incurring warehouse costs on top of the money wasted producing them.

Then you have the licensing issues mentioned above. The license holders wanted to dictate everything, forcing poor decisions on what was developed/produced, which was in line with what the license holders wanted but not what consumers wanted.

In the end, Disney wasn't willing to continue throwing money away on it.

Lol. Please don't make me laugh in the quiet office again.

For real though, sorry to all that were looking forward and investing heavily in the future of Infinity. That sucks hard and feels awfully sudden. I recall asking if this was something we saw all along and it seems some did and some didn't.

is online a big part of DI? or is the main issue the toybox stuff that you won't be able to upload to/download anymore?

assuming there is zero effect on playing by yourself? (just picked up the star wars starter and a few figures in the best buy fire sale)

Hopefully someone can get some private servers up and running. Seems way more likely on Windows machines though.

Hate to see this happen to games people enjoy. Was awful for Resident Evil Outbreak until a kind soul was able to create a Private server so people could play the game as intended again.

What the fucking fuck?

That's outrageously stingy. Disney getting truly evil if this is how they treat people that bought into their ecosystem. They don't give a single shit once your dollars are in.

Man.

Not to mention the kids that saved up to buy this stuff.

Fuck you Disney.

If you are interested in Infinity for just the single player content, you are fine. The Play-Set's and Characters are in the retail game and characters released post-launch are tied to updates that released after the games launch that are on the Sony/MS/Nintendo online servers.

So, if you want to get the other playsets like Marvel Battlegrounds, Star Wars Ep. VII and Finding Dory, you are set :).

They should just give the base game away for free. They can still make money off the toys.

At this point they probably don't even want to produce the toys. Oh well, let them try this toy/game thing again, I'll pass on it so hard now that I know it probably wouldn't last.

Just to be clear about the amiibo discussion, they revealed declining sales when they barely released anything with amiibo compatibility sans Star Fox and Pokken that was pitted against a smash amiibo release period and Splatoon the prior year.

Shit, I like playing the game time to time and trying other Toy Box creations... =(

Good thing I didn't spend too much money on it, guess I will have to download all the good creations and then spend more time on my own Toy Boxes.

Really sad, so much potential wasted...

thanks! hope the force awakened playset drops in price. already got the other two :D

So, either the figures are going to drop in price, which will be great for me to jump in, or they'll skyrocket as people hoard them away.

Please be super cheap, I want Sam and Quorra.

The one on Steam has the same title. I wonder if it'll go offline as well.

Other than that, I mainly bought DI3 for its StarWars part, I don't plan on getting other characters.

And I'll search for a good Toy Box recommandation site.

firesales have already started. you should start looking for the figures you want if you haven't already. many aren't available anymore

Infinity fans,

Does the server shut down mess with any of he achievements/trophies?
Yes. All three games have 1-2 online trophies that must be achieved before servers shut down or they will forever be unattainable.
They are all super easy though and only one of them in 3.0 takes longer than 5 minutes to boost.

I jumped into infinity just a couple months ago. I dropped about $250 on all the characters and play sets I wanted and then boom! I find out that for $250 I get to play the full game for less than a year. This is pretty sad :(

Crap, guess I'll bow out of jumping in late.
Ehh honestly you have 8 months until the servers shut down and you could get all three game's online trophies done in an hour if you wanted to and had a partner.
The starters are super cheap bow so if anybody is interested in the game, NOW is the time to hop on so you can experience the full game, download a bunch of user content, and get all your only need stuff out of the way before servers shut down.

The information about the PC versions confuses me. Will all PC versions be unplayable by April or only the Windows Store versions? If so, why would the Steam version remain playable when both versions were F2P (with horrendously expensive DLC)?

The shut down is only effecting the online MP features, toy box content and the PC/Mobile versions.

You can play the console versions with no problems and this means the following.
-Play-Set content that released post launch that needs updates (patches) can be downloaded from the PSN/XBL/Nintendo servers; those files/updates are forever on those companies servers so you don't have to worry about losing access to that content
-This applies to characters released too, with post launch 3.0 figures working with 3.0 on consoles if you have the patch for them.

The whims of a giant corporation that doesn't even want the money from it.

I at least hope people liked how the figures looked after buying in to them. I haven't used a single amiibo for anything.

No.

You can play the console versions with no problems and this means the following.
-Trophies & Achievements (regarding playsets and what not) still work and can be earned
-Play-Set content that released post launch that needs updates (patches) can be downloaded from the PSN/XBL/Nintendo servers; those files/updates are forever on those companies servers so you don't have to worry about losing access to that content

-You can download toy boxes from the servers and play them even if they go offline (I think)
Sorry bud but this is wrong.

There are a couple online ONLY trophies in each game. Can't get them if the games can't go online.
Also they specifically state in the letter on the OP and sent to me from them via email that all online toybox functions will cease, so no more downloading them.
