MCV: Mario & Pokemon coming within 6 months of NX launch, 3rd parties, exec comment

I think this could be a 3rd version (Star? Eclipse?), since it'd be odd to have 4 versions with 2 just being the same names but on NX. Here they'd pull a PMD where Red was on GBA and Blue was on DS.

But this IS extremely needed, as honestly they dug a hole they're going to have hell to get out of by rushing to get Sun and Moon on 3DS. With how they'll handle any game between now and Gen 8 when that is made for NX.

Maybe this was a compromise with Nintendo. They get to make Sun and Moon on 3DS, but they now have to make sure they get an NX version out ASAP.

If they hadn't said Game Freak, this might have been believable, since Pokémon has spinoffs releasing constantly, even on hardware without mainseries games yet.

But they did say Game Freak, which is just very doubtful with the current state of the mainseries games.

Why? NX is a hybrid based on what we know now, so it'll get a Pokemon eventually

If it really is some kind of mobile handheld console and they dont have a mainline game like sun and moon on it, then Nintendo are truly the bungliest bunglers to ever bungle in the history of bungling.

If it's like heeeeeeey spin off game. Wow just wow.

What? Even if this weren't a mainline Pokemon game, that doesn't mean the NX would never get one.

On GBA, DS, and 3DS; the first mainline Pokemon games for those platforms hit roughly 2 years after the platform's launch. Pokemon has never been a launch-title franchise.

what;s the current state of the main series?

From that Metro article

That list isn’t necessarily the departure it sounds like though, as it doesn’t really imply anything other than the sort of family friendly titles that already appeared on the Wii U. Especially as there’s no EA, 2K Games, Rockstar, or Bethesda.

Can still happen but I'm not holding my breath.

According to the rumor this NX can go up to PS4 power which is all it needs for those AAA third party games. It also needs to have a good user base too.

I agree with you for the most part, but 3DL and MK7 really were massive sales drivers in the first holiday season. I don't think that can be discounted, but I agree the price was a huge factor, maybe the hugest, to turning around the 3DS's fortunes.

Oh absolutely. I'm not doubting that at all. My point is that it's not a good idea to launch all your big sellers at once. Even 3D Land and MK7 were released a month apart (or maybe it was a few weeks).

Whose rumor? 10k or SuperMetalDave? lol

It's not surprising anymore to read how the majority of replies in this thread are pessimistic. We've been so left down by Nintendo on the last year that we don't expect anything exciting from them anymore. I feel the same tbh. But I got a bit of hope after seeing how the new Zelda game is shaping.

The firm has also been busy securing third-party support with Sega, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Activision and Warner Bros already onboard.

“It won’t appeal to PS4 fans. Nintendo seems set on trying to upgrade smartphone gamers."

So what kind of third-party support is the NX going to have if it won't appeal to current gamers? Smartphone ports? Wii-style casual fare? This doesn't sound good to me.

A Blue/Red remake using the new engine would be an interesting idea. It would make sense to capitalize on the stupid amount of hype surrounding the original 151. It won't happen I know...

Upgrading the smartphone market? That's going to be really tough sell. Also somewhere between PS3 and PS4? Guess no big AAA 3rd party games unless downgraded. Good news for handheld fans though as it may finally be not a dated spec wise handheld from Nintendo.

Hype that will probably be gone well before March.

Where did that rumor originate from?

The MCV quote on Nintendo not targeting PS4 gamers does not come as a surprise and is perfectly in line with what Ubisoft said and also with quotes from Nintendo execs themselves.

This is what worries me. I hope to high heaven this "support" doesn't just mean late ports or shovelware.

Still, if they make a crazy handle console hybrid and don't port over Pokemon, dumb as hell. I mean at that point, Why wouldn't you. Beloved franchise that sells like hot cakes, push that and new system, seemingly easy port. Win win.

I'm sure instead it will be some Pokemon Rumble NX and the waaaa waaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaaaah music will play.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

Expect nothing other than family stuff from Western third parties. Best case realistic scenario is a ton of Nintendo games, good Japanese support, and family software from Western publishers. Which would still be a pretty good stream of software.

That's just it, they typically don't do ports for newer systems. For reference, Gen 5 stayed on the DS for years with no 3DS versions of Black/White or B2/W2.

Yeah but thats back when nintendo was dominating, i think that they could outsource the porting or something, they cant really have another 3DS launch, much less another Wii U

It would be REALLY hard to get that game working with just one screen.

how does the arcades machine do it then?

I think that's exacly what's Nintendo going to get from Western 3rd party devs oh and maybe downgraded AAA games for $60. At the same time though Nintendo is probably ok with it.

- Sonic
- Dragon Quest
- Just Dance
- Skylanders
- Lego games

it fits

I think this post is right on the money.

i just realized that if they put pokemon bank on the NX then you would be able to transfer pokemon from 3ds games to NX games right?

does pokemon bank use an account system or leave the data on your 3DS?

Yeah true. But that leaves Square Enix and SEGA. But I bet Square Enix is for the mobile games and SEGA maybe both handheld and console. Or not and maybe NX gets those games like Deus Ex MD and FFXV as well, but it remains be seen how much downgraded it will be then.

It's just about goddamn time that Nintendo reveals the damn thing.

Sega already announced Sonic for the NX and Square Enix heavily implied Dragon Quest was coming.

I think the difference now is, Nintendo needs the nx to do well sooner than later and pokemon is pretty much their biggest selling game on 3ds. It would not be surprising if Nintendo is out right begging game freak for it.

It's not like the NX launch completely hinges on Pokémon. Plus if a port happens, either it won't sell that well since the 3DS version came out months ago (& I'm not sure what they could add to the NX version) or the 3DS version will sell like shit (thus screwing over Nintendo for the holidays even worse than right now).

It uses your NNID.

Miyamoto said they MIGHT show a new kind of Mario at E3 next year so it sounds like it's a ways off.
Not buying the Pokemon thing unless it's a spinoff that enrages everyone.
Oh, a Sun/Moon port...

I'm not sure it is for pokken, considering the FPS hit and lower polys.
But to launch a port without it would be something.
hm

I'm going to heavily disagree with you on that. I spent the vast majority of my gameplay time on that game on local multiplayer. It's still a ton of fun to play with the FPS drop and after a while you really don't care.

It would be crucified if it didn't have local multiplayer out the box.

What clear is that Nintendo is not fixing what's not broken. They're continuing their handheld legacy but now they're adding all of their home console support to it. Right now they are unrivaled in handheld area, not even by smartphones, as they're still unable to provide core gaming experience. They know the difference of two markets and are working to get the best out of them both.

Given the state of the 3DS, it would be more accurate to say that they're focusing on what's less broken.

True, but there's also the question of if 3DS-NX cross-play can work or not.
I would think the only thing you would need is a linked nnid to your my Nintendo account to trade and battle over the network. Other than that there is absolutely no reason why the 2 could talk to each other. The only thing that would stop cross play is Nintendo themselves.

I'd have said Pokkén Tournament port but they mentioned Game Freak. Will wait and see.
The guy seemed to explicitly imply a Sun/Moon port.

I can't wait to see what comes of this. If Sun and Moon HD is released on NX, it would be amazing.
Please give me a Monster Hunter on the TV again. I'm tired of trying to make out tiny details on a small screen. The MH games have such beautiful backdrops and it made me especially sad to see MH3U stuff in Gen.
I feel the same way. I'm really ready to go back to my MH3U HD days being parked in front of my huge TV. I love MH4U and MHG on 3DS but I'd like to have it on the big screen again.

Miyamoto says a lot of things. It's been 3 years since a Super Mario game, and 4 years since a Mario Bros game was released. EAD Tokyo (or whatever its called now) hasn't released anything since 2014, and that was only NES Remix. There is a Mario game ready to come down the pipe.

As for third parties - none listed make sports games. If Nintendo wants to recapture the casual, pick up and play market they need sports games. No Madden or FIFA is a big miss, in my opinion. (EA would also bring Star Wars).
