Yuji Naka wishes to again pitch a Mario & Sonic action game to Takashi Iizuka (Sega)

Yuji Naka in an interview with Famitsu (copy and paste the link to your address bar):

“Actually, I wanted Mario [and Sonic] to appear together, so one time I went to give Miyamoto-san a presentation on how I want to create an action game which is co-starred by Mario and Sonic. It was in the GameCube days, and I took around four planners with me. It is a pity that the discussion was ‘clearly it isn’t necessary for Mario and Sonic to co-star in an action [game]’ and it didn’t become a reality, but SEGA was able to get the license for the Olympics just at that time, so in order to make the best use of the license, companion characters appeared together. A little later Sonic appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, this too came into reality because I requested from Sakurai-san, ‘I want Sonic to appear [in Smash Bros.]’. The Olympics is a bit different from my wish, but I think it’s a good thing that children around the world are happy about them co-starring. But someday I want to realize an action [game] together with Mario. I think I’m going to give another presentation so that Takashi [Iizuka] finds the necessity [of a Mario & Sonic action game] (laughs).

Naoto Ohshima also added:

“I also agree. Previously they were considered rivals, but when I saw them co-starring, I honestly thought that Nintendo acknowledged Sonic.”

Naoto Ohshima was just recently involved with Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on 3DS, so that's a start from his end, but it's amazing that Yuji Naka still wants to work on this idea and wants to pitch it to Sega where he hasn't been in 10 years! :p

Can we finally have this on NX Nintendo and Sega with Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima on board (and Hirokazu Yasuhara if he's able)? Please? :p

It'd be interesting sure but i'm not sure how they can work together when Mario is about slow and methodological platforming and Sonic is about speed and quick reaction.

That's why I was thinking that instead of Mario x Sonic, you get something like how FE x SMT became TMS #FE.

So you get some random looking boy dressed up as Mario and he has a Sonic persona for some reason. Instead of it being a platformer, Atlus develops the game because they are under Sega and it ends up being an RPG.

Sonic Lost World felt like it was trying to be a Nintendo game, especially with the DLC levels which are arguably the best part about that game.

Nintendo is a lot more open to crossovers these days, so maybe. And Sonic & Mario have been together on several occasions already, plus SEGA and Nintendo seem to have a decent relationship these days. So, maybe!

The pitch being handled by Yuji Naka is also quite interesting.

I'd like to see it happen, although I can't really imagine how it could become a good game right now. I wouldn't want it to be mission based like other Sonic games where you just switch characters between each mission...

Also, didn't Naka leave Sonic Team and Sega like 10 years ago for Prope? What is even his involvement with Sonic/Sega now?

All that does is raise Sonic up at the cost of dragging Mario down. I'd rather just have a good Mario game. And if Sega would do the development (thus not interfering with development of a full-fledged Mario title), then I'd honestly rather not have the game at all. It'd probably be awful.

They really ought to make a one-off title that explores reinterpreting each other's core features and styles just because it would be neat to play. Maybe create a new blend rather than just swapping out course and action designs, like a modern 2D Mario & Sonic take on the old co-op-focused Sega/Disney game, World of Illusion.

I remember a Sonic/Mario crossover game being rumoured back in the day, it was heavily tipped in GC mags at the time. Wonder if this was what they were on about.

Yuji Naka was at summer of sonic in London today and answered a question about working on sonic again a and said roughly that he still has talks about maybe doing something with sonic again so who knows what may happen in the future and he'd like to discuss the ideas further.

It can be great if well made, much like the dual gameplay of Sonic Generations.

That could work, I'd even be satisfied with just a 3D World/Land style game with Mario, Luigi, Sonic, and Tails. I think Sonic can blend into Mario's gameplay pretty easy if you had to settle with one game type.

I love both franchises, but I have a hard time imagining a proper crossover. There's also the question of who's going to develop it. Nintendo isn't going to touch Sonic, and I doubt they would let Sega touch Mario.

If they're just going to go the Generations route and have individual Mario levels and Sonic levels, then what's the point of the crossover? If it happens, I want them to bring something unique that only a crossover could do. I guess that's the main challenge of doing one. But it would definitely be amazing if they could pull it off.

Also, I'm mostly happy about the fact that Yuji Naka is considering going back to Sonic. I hope it happens, would be cool to see.

No thanks.

It's a bad idea that thankfully won't happen.

Care to elaborate?

I like the idea in theory. It would be really nifty if it was something small- something as simple as Sonic getting added to the New Super Mario Brothers NX game. Ever since Sega started focusing on software, when the possibility opened (over a decade ago?) for those guys to jam on the same system I think it's been underutilized and a long time coming.

But then I think why not not just be separate games as normal. If this forum is to believed a lot of Mario fans can't stand playing even a good Sonic game.

I just don't see much in common between the two aside from them both being platformers. Unless Naka has some crazy creative way to mash them up that ends up playing like neither

A Pixar animated movie starring Mario & Sonic along with all of the 90s classic characters teaming up along with a AAA Nintendo game based on the film that is co produced by Sonic Team. Make it happen, Sega/Nintendo.

Think Wreck it Ralph only not terrible.

I just want it to happen. As long as it's good. These two series were the lynchpins of my childhood. To see them finallu star together in a platformer would be wonderful for me.

I'm glad your happy about this news Hero :). I know you want this to happen a lot :D!

Personally, I would be interested in this, as I could imagine Sonic running through Mario levels and Mario hopping across Sonic's worlds. While going the Generations route would be the 'safe' way to do something like this, I would like a blended game.

Basically, taking Lost Worlds gameplay and expanding on it heavily & refining that style enough so both Sonic & Mario can work well in that mold. Have Nintendo EAD and Sonic Team (Colors) work on it with Myamotto and Naka overseeing production and we have a winner :).

Sonic is the freeloading homeless character of gaming canon who has only survived this long by shopping dubious sexual favors. I don't mind if Nintendo wants to take Sonic in and nurse his shriveled corpse back to health, but partnering him with the royalty of Mario straight from the jump shouldn't be happening.

:l.........Another Sonic Sucks comment I see, just praised differently.

And here I thought this thread was going to be a nice discussion focused one. Oh well. See you all later.

Edit: Just a bit tired of the bile toward the series on here sometimes.....so sorry if my comment came off as harsh or needlessly mean.

Mario & Sonic RPG by the fine folks who made Bowser's Inside Story pls

But a crossover title in the same vein as Generations would be great.

Meh I'll pass if it's Sega doing the development.
My thoughts exactly. On top of that, Sega developed game age terribly, something that most mainline Mario titles excel at. If this were to happen, Nintendo would have to do it. They gave Sonic more justice in one game(Smash Bros) than Sega ever did.
