A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

Guys, it's coming in the Day 30 patch. Reviewers should wait till review it till then.
Off topic but that is a silly comparison to the day 1 patch as a large portion of playing bought this game online anyways and the ones who bought physical nearly all have Internet access. Reviewing a pre release copy no one will play was silly.

Ok but again, he said we would be able to see each other and it isn't happening. So what happened?

So watching Psytokat and this dude barely knows how to hold a controller. And you all want to base "no mp" off of this guy?

Going to leave this here.

After this latest group of tweets the only explanation in my mind is that something is supposed to happen when two players are near each other but it's not working right, and Sean doesn't want to give away a magical moment by tweeting in plain terms about it.

I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. But if that's not the case, then they are being actively deceptive at this point.

Thank you. This only proves my point:

Never did he say we could GROUP UP and explore/fight/trade/survive the galaxy together.

As I've posted repeatedly: We ARE playing together, with our friends, online, in separate instances within the same galaxy-server. Sean has never lied about that fact. And that falls under the "Online" stickers on the boxes.

All he said was we could SEE each other at some point. Nothing beyond that.

But he did say the only way to see how you look like is another player did he not?

I fully expect an explanation via tweet / statement within the next 2-3 hours since it is later afternoon where Hello Games is located. I would wager that whatever caused those two players to not see each other is and has been getting investigated.

Possible explanations:

1. Regional servers (the players aren't from the same country or something? Not sure.)
2. It's a bug.
3. Servers are over loaded.
4. Being able to see players is only possible after reaching a certain point in the game?
5. He lied and should exit the gaming industry forever.

Or maybe 6: It's a work in progress, and he thought he had more time.

If anyone is genuinely upset by the lies and deceit then get a refund. Being melodramatic and demanding answers on a neogaf thread won't help.
Get your money back and move on

No, people want to base it on the words of the actual developer, but they aren't talking. Which is strange, since they did address the "finding each other" part. Hence the confusion of what was supposed to happen.

He said the only way to see what you look like is if you encounter another player. Doesn't get more clear than that.

please stop.

they are clearly in the exact same spot.

this has nothing to do with holding a controller.

I know this is against your narrative, but we are literally watching it live.
No edits. No jokes. It's right now.

Guys, we need to make a thread about the 'DYNAMIC' theme advertised for the limited edition. It's a static theme. This is not what we were promised!!!!! (I'm actually peeved about this)

Pretty much how my stance was every since the 'Journey' and 'Jack's Dad from LOST' comments.

If that were the case, no sane dev would be 100% radio silent about it. They could mention that something is supposed to happen while still being vague about it. Sean's pretty good at that.

Both players online in the same system on the same space station and can't see eachother.

Now they are flying out and back in and still no trace of eachother.

This is a single player game with a shared naming database.

Is it? Things point to nope but please enlighten us.

One attempt on day one doesn't point to anything really. Especially with the server issues that were present yesterday. We've been told multiple times that it can happen but it's near impossible. So far, I can't think of a reason to believe that isn't true.

I am not jumping to any conclusions though as we just don't know the reason. Maybe you shouldn't either.

If there really is some miraculous way to see another player that is not working because of servers its probably something like seeing a mirage / time anomaly / ghost like dark souls.
And I doubt even that is in.

So... has he given a definitive "yes" or "no" response, or is he dodging-and-weaving with the best of them?

Yes is the answer. Yes has been the answer ever since the games announcement in 2014. I watched every single interview and Sean has ALWAYS mentioned that you can play with other people, you'll get to find out what your avatar looks like once you see ANOTHER PLAYER, you can grief and DM others if you see them, you wont see a nametag over them so you might miss players that fly past you.

I don't get how people are in denial about this and say "he never promised MP", yes he did and you can look it up (the talk show interview is one of the more recent ones where he outright says you can run into other people).

BUT then there's the game launch on PS4 with people reporting that no position data is sent to the servers (which doesn't really mean anything though, they'd probably use P2P anyways and potentially try to connect you to players that are in your solar system? That's how I'd do it: whenever you request data for a planet you also get flagged as in that system so you're ready to get paired with whoever enters said system too).

They probably realized they couldn't finish the MP aspect in time for launch and scrapped it.

I guess a lot of the industry is insane then.

And he was not 100% radio silent. It was just not the answers people were looking for.

It's still the most BS spin I have ever heard in my opinion. He knows what people mean by "Multiplayer" in this day and age.

Comments in interviews where the interviewer brings up multiplayer is not an advertising campaign. Yes, this answer is misleading, but people are acting like Sean Murray paraded out multiplayer as the selling point of the game.

So because it's not a or the selling point, if it's not there that's okay?

It's not even defending a game they like. It's defending a game they sometimes doesn't even know yet, games that they're only hyped at.

I will not say Sean Murray straight up lied to us just yet. I have a very strong feeling he is avoiding answer it clearly cause he knows he never cleared that up and that he is not delivering exactly what he said he would, BUT I will give it a week before forming an definitive opinion about this situation.
Yea, I think there has GOT to be more to this than, "Lol, I thought I would get away with it." Maybe they wanted to patch it immediately, maybe the server issues are contributing to it, maybe its tied to a really cool progression easter egg that Sean doesn't wanna spoil.
Things do change during development though, I don't get upset at silly stuff like "broken promises" or whatever. I don't own a PS4 so I don't have a stake in this at all but I see this as poor communication from the devs and a hungry fanbase whipping themselves in to a frenzy over nothing of consequence
I mean yea, that's exactly what it is. It's just weird that he wouldn't see this coming. Never leave a NEAR statistical impossibility up to the internet. They will make it happen. I hope he can clear the air, because the netizens are gonna eat HG alive at this rate.

Well this is even more odd now

The two streamers are seeing completely different things outside the space station they are taking off from

One of them there is a fleet of ships outside the space station and the other one just has nothing

That's a hell of a gamble. Given how intelligent the people at HG are, I wouldn't bet on this being a possibility.

If I was pressed for time...I'd focus on aspects of the game that players were immediately and most likely going to experience...

Yes and that's all he needs to answer for.

He needs to tell us why two players couldn't SEE each other yesterday.

That's it. That's all we need an answer to.
That's what the thread is totally about tho. That's literally the title of the thread and you're going off on random stuff.

How many devs do you know have been radio silent on Twitter while thousands of people were asking them about some sort of controversy because they knew it would be resolved by itself the same day or soon enough?

The Hello Games line on whether this game supports players seeing each other seems like such obvious standard marketing question-dodging, and in select interviews it's worse than that (from what we can tell so far).

but it's seen as an indie darling so being critical of how this has been handled and communicated means you're "junior varsity gamergate" to some, lmao

"A little bit" is his response to "Can you grief other players".

My point is: anyone expecting this game to have a multiplayer was not paying attention to anything besides 3 second vague clips of Sean giving one word answers to multiplayer questions. It's not a multiplayer-based game, and that was pretty obvious from anyone watching impressions or reading about the game.

And who knows, maybe there is multiplayer in some limited form that simply isn't working properly yet?

Read the game informer interview where he goes into a fair amount of detail about the lobby system, and how it's not an MMO but they have a system set up to handle more than two players in the same instance. He goes into a fair amount heavily implying that there is a multiplayer system.

I agree it's not the main thrust of the game, but it is very Molyneux'ish. It's like defending fable by saying planting trees is not a major feature of the game. True, but it's not really the point. The point is that the game is not entirely what was advertised.

Im sure DeepEnigma or Pop can find you a reasonable explanation for that. Stay tuned.

I have the feeling that this is the reality of it. I think they have distanced themselves enough away from the idea that two people can walk around and explore together and that in the end, when two players happen to run into each other, some sort of easter egg will (or is supposed to) pop. I'm thinking that the whole "you can see them and they can see you" language is specific/cryptic enough that its pointing to some sort of meta theme, like everyone is going to be a wisp or some sort of invisible creature/ghost/deity that only leaves traces of its presence but is not some sort of fully rendered avatar. If this function was going to be patched in later as they were needing to ship, maybe they were counting on it taking weeks or months for two people to find eachother and were banking on it being patched in at that point.

He literally said you could grief other players. No amount of backtracking is going to change that fact.
