Bound review thread

I was hoping the reviews would sell me on the game, but they haven't.

Gonna' need GAF impressions before jumping in. Sucks that I'll miss the pre-order discount.

Destructoid reviewer said there was a reason to replay it but he didn't want to because the game wasn't good enough to demand it. But he also said some shit about PoP 2008 that I don't remember that game doing so who knows.

I agree with the Destructoid reviewer, unfortunately. The incentive to replay is there, but I wouldn't have bothered if I wasn't reviewing.

Sounds like an improvement over Datura, at least.

In retrospect, I feel like Datura would have been better off as a VR project.

Datura may have been a failure, but it was an interesting failure at least with a few moments that really stuck with me.

Either way, I'll always support scene groups, so gonna buy Bound regardless of what the reviews have to say.

That sounds good. Wish I had time to play it, so I could snag that discounted price, but I don't like to buy things until I can sit down the play them.

Based on the last video I watched the platforming was clunky due to long drawn out animations , trying to accurately judge where you land when she is twirling her feet in the air etc looked rough.

Visuals did look amazing though and seemed like it might have an interesting story , but if the platforming is clunky then I can see the game getting frustrating .

If you are getting this then I recommend at least two playthroughs. It will only take a few hours. If you do suffer from bouts of motion sickness be wary. I felt dizzy in a couple of parts.

I liked a lot of stuff about Datura, but the controls needed a kick in the arse. It was weird and creative and I liked that, but I don't think I was ever comfortable with the controls whether using the Dual Shock 3 or PS Move.

That doesn't sound like the reviewer has some sort of bitter predisposition against AAA. /s

Get over yourself, dude. Artsy games are accepted fine (maybe even better than AAA) in the current climate. You're not some snowflake.

haha that is pretty ridiculous

Not in review threads my friend. One or two 5 or 6/10 in a sea of high scores is either "all over the place" or a "mediocre" game.

Yeah, I think you're right about that, unfortunately.

People nowadays think only in absolutes.

We're all Sith now ;)

It's only $20 and I have been looking forward to it, but I am going to hold off for awhile. I have had a string of purchasing regrets that I am ready to put an end to.

Been really curious about this one. Crazy variety of scores there.

haha yeah this review is terrible. I remember playing my first indie game!

Call me old and jaded but this kind of experimental / original idea is what keeps my interest in videogames going these days. I still, enoy the Uncharteds, Halo's but I need these unique games too.

Same. I'm looking forward to the uniqueness of it.

I think I'll enjoy just the presentation, and hopefully the story, too, even if the platforming is kind of dull. Jumping around has never been all that interesting to me anyhow, so I didn't really expect that part to add much. I'm in it mostly for the artistic and creative qualities.

I agree. I love mainstream big budget stuff from the Naughty Dogs and Biowares of the industry, but really since about 2010 it has been these odd, distinct creative games which have really seized my attention, like this, Tokyo Jungle, Journey, Resogun, Abzu, etc. They might not have as much depth but I find them thematically interesting and just the right length. Plastic have been getting better with each game, so I've been looking forward to this for a while.

I appreciate Sony continue to publish these artsy kind of games. It doesnt look super interesting mechanically but I might check it out down the line. Waiting for GAF impressions too.

Had this preordered but was starting to get a bit worried about the glitchy demo they showed off a couple of days back. Good to see that it actually has a number of intelligent things to say. Looking forward to it now.

Dang, this and Abzu have disappointed critically. Not quite what Sony was hoping for, I'm sure. I'll get them both when 50% off.

I'm more disappointed in the review outlets that apparently still favor flavorless AAA mush over games that try to do something different.

Disappointed? I thought abzu did well in reviews and this seems to landing around a 7, these are very small indie titles something the reviewing media still have trouble with scoring.

Oh stop. Being a unique game doesn't automatically mean 9s and 10s on principle. In 2016, when SO many games are doing unique things there are those that are better at succeeding with they do uniquely than others and thus get better reviews. Like Journey or Inside. Even triple A games are more diverse than they've ever been.

From Destructoid:
It also does that Prince of Persia 2008 thing where you fall to your death, even if a ledge is only a few feet away, because the game just doesn't want you to go there.

Man i hate this type of design.

They don't, but they also don't deserve docking points because some people might not like it, or are too short, or lack mechanical depth, when all of these things don't matter for the kind of game that they're trying to be. Even here you see a lot of reviews talking about the lack of challenge in this notgame. I haven't played it, so it may well be grating and the critique warranted, but I meant that I hoped reviewers were past this 'objective reviewing' by now.

I really don't agree with this.

That's the point of reviews. Varying opinions from different people.

I don't see how you can tell someone else to 'get it' when I'm sure most of them do, but are still let down in some place or another.

It may seem that way if one just looks at the scores, particularly from the bigger websites. However, reading the written words (lol) it becomes apparent that the reviews by large are really quite positive.
IGN and EGM both gave the game a 7, good but maybe not 'must buy' scores, but reading the actual review it still looks like the game I wanted it to be:

'Despite being a relatively-simple 3D platformer, Bound’s fantastic sense of movement and strange, dream-like world make it utterly unique. It’s a testament to phenomenal controls and sense of grace that I was able to set aside the camera and design flaws, and fully immerse myself in this strange, beautiful story.'
http://uk.ign.com/articles/2016/08/16/bound-review

'A powerful, poignant story that utilizes a brilliantly crafted world and movement mechanic to help get its symbolism across. Its short length and lack of gameplay depth hold the experience as a whole back, however.'

If you haven't even played it then ffs that makes your assertion that the reviewers didn't know how to review the game or don't understand small artsy games because they want triple A is incredibly ridiculous. And it doesn't matter if you don't agree, triple A games ARE way more diverse than they were in the past. And for good reason.

I was replying to a post about Abzu and No Man's Sky. Which by the way I 'only' consider 8/10 games myself, but at least better than most other games I played this year. But you can simply read in the reviews, glowering praise, not so high score.

If you only look back a couple of years maybe. It used to be the case that AAA was where all the exciting innovation took place, now they are mostly safe affairs copying off each other and intent on checking boxes, collapsing under the weight of their own production budgets. This is not a minority opinion, yours is.
