NYT: Republicans close to Trump say he's "exhausted, frustrated and bewildered"

Considering that Trump is a true outsider, nobody should be surprised the election is wearing him down. Running for & being president will take years off one's life.

This is probably the hardest Trump has worked in his entire life.

I've said this a lot recently: America made it through the election of a black man named Hussein. Trump is no McCain or Romney and he likely won't comport himself with the same grace when he loses but I just don't see that lost inflaming tensions in a way that necessitates alarm or is somehow new territory for America. What, exactly, do you think his supporters will do? Riot? Start lynching people? Form a militia?

What?

I'd like an answer by EscoBlades on this as well. What exactly does he think will happen.

By the same token, I'm also curious to know what he thinks Dems will do if Trump wins.

Same plan as always: say we're going to move to Canada, then sigh and resign ourselves to spending eight years cleaning up the inevitable mess left behind once he leaves office.

I have a coworker so angry about the Democrat's "socialist liberal agenda" that she is threatening to move to Canada. Like, are you even trying?

This is the year we discover just how many people will vote for the Republican for no other reason than the candidate is Republican.

A vile, unproven, unprofessional, lying, racist, narcissistic coward with no campaign to speak of, no policy, no message, no support, and no GOTV campaign.

He'll probably get 40% of the vote.
I think the most interesting thing will be the overall voter turnout numbers and then the demographics of who turns up.

Do dedicated R voters come out to vote Trump because they hate Hillary so much? Or are they deflated and somehow get replaced by infrequent voters who Trump tries to appeal to?

Dunno. Will be interesting.

Check.
Possibly. It is America we are talking about.
Already way ahead of you.

I think you may be right but I'd caution that (especially in this election) that 40% of the vote doesn't equate to 40% of the population. Trump and Clinton (and their historically low approvals) will lower the number of those hitting the polls...just my opinion though.

I have a conservative friend who once said he would move to Canada if Hillary won. This was shortly after Trudeau was elected, I think. I had to think of a quick, not overtly political way to explain to him exactly why that would be a silly thing for him to do. The thing I settled on was "If you don't want Hillary as president, you shouldn't go to Canada. You'd hate their new Prime Minister more. He specifically made sure that 50% of his cabinet members were women!" That did it.

I suspect his vote share will be a lot less than that.

There are plenty of decent Republicans out there who, for whatever reasons (SCOTUS, pro-life, NRA, tax policy, bootstraps, family tradition, local tradition etc) are clinging onto Trump. Much of this support will vanish as it becomes clear to them that he has no path to winning - probably after the first debate. At that point you know that Trump won't be able to deliver on any of this, and personal dislike of the man will kick in.

The fact that he has women cabinet members is what turned him off? Cool friend.

I'm convinced he's trying to undermine the whole thing and just wants it over.

"My name is Donald Trump. I'm a businessman. I'm not much of a philosopher, but if you want to know what I believe, I'll tell you. I believe the greatest threats to our freedom actually start Republican. They begin as random events that most people don't even notice.

But they grow. They multiply.

They start chain reactions that threaten the entire world. Some people call that "fate". I call it "Chaos Theory". But, believing in Chaos Theory doesn't mean you have to surrender to it.

That's where I come in.

I find those Republicans before they get out of hand, and I embarrasses and undermine them. Quickly, quietly, relentlessly. I take the political clout from a few to protect the lives of many. I commit acts of lunacy to preserve the greater peace. I take no joy in ruining my reputation, but make no mistake; I'll do what needs to be done. Because it's my job. It's my duty.

My name is Donald Trump, and I am a Splinter Cell."

I guess he did, but he has made nothing but disastrous and embarrassing statements and decisions that have some gotten worse over the past 1.5 years, and he has done nothing but make Republicans look bad (or worse), and expose seem really filthy undersides to the party. None of that is bad.

I'm having a bit of fun, but it is almost suspicious to me. Hilary hasn't really needed to defend herself or explain things (she has for policies though), as he's been imploding and dismantling Republicans himself. This campaign will be dissected for years to come.

It is literally the least suspicious thing in the world. A TV buffoon with no political experience or organizational structure is up against an incredibly well-funded and prepared woman who has been one of the most powerful people on Earth for decades. This is exactly like one of those street ball guys with a killer crossover who think they can take Lebron. "Why does he keep getting dunked on? Something is afoot!"

I think people still have a hard time believing that Trump did all of this without really knowing what he was doing. At some point, a narrative crafted that Trump was some type of master manipulator, and while I do think Trump understood the 24/7 news cycle well (maybe even better than any other candidate to date), I think his winning the primaries was more of a fluke than people realize.

It was the perfect storm of a GOP base that has been conditioned for years with racist and dividing rhetoric, a very split ticket with weak candidates, and at a time when racial relations are at a boiling point and the far right, particularly the uneducated white, are beginning to really fear some type of radical societal change that they don't understand and looking for someone to 'tell them like it is,' or, at least, how they think it is.

I think his performance in the general post-DNC really showed he's just clueless. He managed to swerve his boat into that perfect storm, but when he came to more open seas, he was lost. Time did an article, Inside Donald Trump's Meltdown, that's worth a read if you can find it. His interview in there really dispels any belief (at least on my part) that Trump doesn't want to win, but you can just tell he doesn't know what he's doing with some of the shit he says in it.

It looks like they took away his phone or changed his Twitter password again. We are 18 hours without incident.

He's probably prepping for tonight's clown show with Lumpy Hannity.

I expect great things from that clown show....

Terrible. But great.

So far, it seems like 4 days is the longest Trump will stay on the leash before reverting back into full-on frothing and drooling mode.

The fact is that the GOP has cultivated a base which does not care for a candidate's knowledge, experience, or understanding of political matters. They care about presentation and saying the things the GOP wants to hear. Donald Trump doesn't need to know a damn thing to win a primary, because that's not what the GOP base cares about.

Lots more at link, including descriptions of a failed intervention and bewilderment from the GOP establishment.

Fuck me, there is not a more perfect personification/clone of my boss, than there is in Trump. Knowing this tells me that any debate prep will be met with hostility and utter failure as a narcissist of this calibre can't be told what to do, nor how to do it, especially from an expert. You see, he already knows it all and you're just holding him back, wasting his time, when he could be coming up with new names for Hillary.

Just like my boss, Trump is his own worst enemy who will be totally responsible for his crash and burn, but will lash out at any and everybody in response to it, taking none of the responsibility, since it's all been rigged against him the whole time. Poor victim.

We should find out who these supporters are and deport them to an island somewhere. We can call it Australia.

He looks tired, folks. Doesn't he? He just looks very, very tired and let me tell you, I think he has given up. He's given up. It's very hard - this whole thing, doing this - it's very hard, believe me. And people are saying - I'm not saying it - but people are saying it's his age. It's probably because of his age.

I've been wanting to tweet things like this on a burner account over and over again just to try to rattle him.
