Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
So, I just went and played a bit of TitanFall 1.

Holy shit, it's such a better game. It's been a while, last I played they just added the black market. The Ranked mode seems new.

Shame I didn't get more play in for that game, it was and is a gem.

I really wanted Titanfall 2 to be everything they had done well with the DLC + single player.

Looks like they went a very different direction.

That's why this is so painful.

I would like to see bounty hunt players increased to 6v6. I just played 2 rounds in a row and it's a lot of fun. I would like to see a couple more pilots.

OK, the more I play it, the more it grows on me. Sure, the same issues are still there (Time for Titans instead of this scorestreak thing, movement is a tad too limited), but overall, it's fun.

I'm kind of in the same boat.

The grapple mechanic is a joy and I'm with others who say that it should just be standard kit. There's not really a reason to use anything else but that ability. My only beef is that it feels like maps really favor the grappling hook over wall running now.

The shield mechanic still burns me though. I wish they could add something that lets people help out teammates but retains the fact that we had shields before. I want to have the duels from the first game back. Right now it plays like two Titans just going at it till they both blow up. Maybe one will get lucky and have a huge advantage via a shield recharge.

I like that they made pilots matter in a Titan on Titan fight. They just have too much power now with grapple and the new battery mechanic.

lol and I still haven't been able to party up with friends. Everytime I do party up, whenever the leader searches for a match none of us actually join him and the worst part is that since we were supposed to be in a match with him, no one else on his team can join. So if there are two other people in his party, he searches for a game and his team will be two men short. No random player can fill those two player slots, ending in a 5 vs 3 (or even 5 vs 1 if he had 4 people in his party)

I know this is pre-alpha but this doesn't really help Respawn in convincing us to play the game lol

PS4 btw. Same thing has happened two days in a row.

Also, most of us can't even access the invite system. Only through the PS4 OS are we able to.

In case y'all were worried that this game doesn't have the high-intensity feel of the first.

Also, for those wondering about the movement coming off of some of the absolute shitposts I've seen in this thread.

That free-running at the beginning looked awkward as hell. You actually landed on the ground. The grapple hook parts are cool, but nobody is complaining about that.

Having played Titanfall 1 earlier today, in the brief amount of time I played it for, I'd say I managed moments like that (sans grapple hook) fairly frequently, and more smoothly (such as not landing on the ground, more consistent pace of movement). And that I'd chalk up to the maps.

No it isnt. The game wich love btw was dead after a month really. Dropped very fast. Struggled the rest of the year when DLC came and the community got split up. Then it lived up again when the DLC got free and it came with EA Access.

May i ask why a game is considered dead even if you always find Instant groups to play with? And why can people only enJoy a game they personally love when more than *insertnumberhere* other people are playing the same game worldwide? This really puzzles me since the beginning of online gaming...

The stim is a lifesaver honestly. I can get away so fast and get your health back quickly.

The decoy actually works too and causes a lot of confusion. Grapple is nice but I don't think it should be standard.

I think the kind of disparaging comparisons to cod are totally illogical.

- Build Time has been replaced by getting kills and playing the objective (aka the Score Streak system from Call of Duty)
- Maps have more open lanes of sight
- Gametypes do not allow for mobility, Bounty Hunt for example requires you to kill in select location and deposit cash in select locations. It's a poor replacement for Attrition which encouraged movement and still involved AI kills

I may be in the minority but I really don't think this is a bad thing (and it's not like your build time resets if you get killed a la CoD streaks)

I don't get what you showed??? That you can use the grappling hook? The hook that's totally not OP compared to the other skills? The hook that isn't necessary to get the same freedom of movement from the first game?

Well congratulations. You're right. Criticisms have been shit posts. /s

Similar concept though. It's unpopular because it goes against the principle of everyone being able to get a Titan. Now bad players will not.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
Balance stuff can still be tweaked so this may change but I have another heartbreaker most people probably haven't been able to experience--the Cloak in this game seems awful. :(

Went against a guy who had it unlocked and in that one match alone I got 3 clips that just made me go *what*.

1. I could see his orange pilot lights while he was cloaked and I was in a titan.

2. You can clearly see the green trail when he is holding a battery and cloaked

3. Possibly the most hilarious, the guy rodeo'd me and took my battery...and the game still puts that big battery icon right on him.

Considering this is supposed to be best used AGAINST titans and I wasn't even doing this as a pilot, I have no idea why you would use cloak anymore.

I see that as the reasoning, but I would hope with decent matchmaking (I know, probably a pipedream) that the matches would be reasonable enough that people will be able to do OK. To be fair I am thinking more in terms of Bounty Hunt, where with decent positioning it seems you can do alright collecting bounties even if you are not great PvP. I think it's a more valid issue in the other two modes though.

Nah dude it's call of duty with robots now. Someone probably spawned in and shot you in the back but you edited it out.

Nope.

that is so slow. how can you not see that?

It's not "slow". The game is still fast paced. It's just "not as fast" as TF1. No reason it has to be just as fast. The run-speed would have changed nothing about this moment.

Well yeah the free-running looked a bit awkward, I was running away from two enemy titans lol. But honestly, anyone who's playing this and is saying that the free-running is any different than the first game is a liar. I'm willing to bet it's programmed the exact same way even, with only bugs being fixed. Trust me, this mechanic is the exact same as in TF1.

I showed that wall running is still crucial to get out of tricky situations. A lot of the footage I have seen people bitching about has been from players who go refuse to use the wallrun and double jump.

I understand that you think comments saying that this game is like CoD are "criticism", but frankly when the first game came out people compared it to CoD then, too. The game is still very Titanfall, and people who are playing it like CoD are getting beaten. Badly.

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
Stim lasts for all of 2 seconds...

That's ok, the only way to actually play this game like titanfall requires the slow as shit grapple hook.

But who wants to play this like titanfall anyways?

I've watched Didact play this and barely touch the floor, instead of him outplaying as he should be he gets shot down by stationary players because he's a slower orange glowing firefly in Titanfall 2.

Can't believe how badly they screwed this game up.

Titanfall 2 is the videogame equivalent of Clash of the Titans.

All they had to do as take the original movie and update the visuals/cinematography. Instead they changed everything that made the original movie a classic.

I think the kind of disparaging comparisons to cod are totally illogical.

You're free to disagree, but there's no conspiracy against the game. I wanted to love it, I've been talking about titanfall on ps4 for ages. I don't play my shooters on PC, but brought titanfall on PC and loved it. When that died down, it was a large reason why I picked up an Xbox. We all know the devs are good, this just isn't the game many of us expected or wanted. It does feel COD-ified and personally, I hate having to say that.

This went from a must-buy to a maybe when it's cheaper and that's sad to me. I still trust that Respawn will try to right it, but I question what they can even do at this point.

As someone who used to watch the classic all the time with my grandfather, I agree.

Let's go over some of the stuff Respawn got right so far

  • Gunplay is still very fun
  • Relegating wallhang to a perk is a godsend
  • Stim is fun despite replenishing too slowly
  • New carbine is still juicy
  • They nailed the slide mechanic
  • Music seems like it's going to be as amazing as ever
  • Graphics are cleaner than the original and seem to perform well
  • Networks is a great idea, and once working properly will be wonderful. i see other games copying it
  • Pilot v Pilot mode is actually decent, unlike it was in the original game
  • Grapple is fun after you get the hang of it
  • They made holo pilot useful and fun to use unlike what Bungie did in Reach

Anything else?

Slide and the grapple were great additions, I'll definitely agree there. After playing TF today, the graphics are indeed much nicer.

Got lots of Titan action here:

https://youtu.be/WcTlig4vZSs

I'm sorry, but this won't do much to convince the sceptics. Very little mobility on show here, practically no parkour and verticality almost non-existent. Titan combat was worryingly bland too. The slow pace and lack of cover made it look like a simple slugfest. Titans badly need dash abilities, or at the very least another defensive option as this particular map does not provide enough cover.

I'm starting to see the TTK complaints too. A couple of times you dispatched a player almost instantly aiming anywhere but his head, leaving me wondering about headshots - is there any point to them now? Look at 3.12 in the clip, opponent has over half his health yet he looks dead after just 2 bullets to the leg with the R201. Previously you could stand a chance against an opponent who shot first by landing a headshot, here it looks like you won't get much opportunity.

I feel like this being impressive is the problem though. It was pretty easy to pull traversal like this off in the first game, whereas in TF2 the maps we've seen so far make it pretty difficult.

it's also not that impressive since it shows how much slower it all is compared to the first, and also that nothing at all is going on in the clip.

well thank you for showing us that wall running was still possible.

But maybe we were all already aware that it was there and have been discussing the actual changes to it and the rest of the mechanics.

lol. exactly what I was thinking. All I think about when I see people pointing out vids like this is "ok.. this was standard play in titanfall 1."

The biggest complaint I have about the game right now is that everyone should be able to use the grappling hook at any time. Like holy shit not having it makes me feel so much less mobile.

Really having a blast with this unlike the first Titanfall game cause I fell off that game hard like well almost everybody.

I thought titanfall 1 was pretty meh but titanfall 2 is amazing! The grappling hook is a game changers. I have killed so many people and gotten out of dangerous situations pretty quick too.
Day one for me! I haven't had this much fun since MW2.

It really does feel like the maps were designed around players having grappling hooks at their disposal. There are gaps between structures and places of interest too large to traverse safely and quickly with wall running and sliding alone.

I agree - I think it should be as core to this game as wall running was in the first game.
