Probably a fairly easy question. I have two Languish that are just sitting around and I know it's well past "sell them before rotation" time, but what should I do with them? Just hold them? They are buylisting for like $1 USD according to MTGGoldfish, so that doesn't seem worth it unless I'm really hard up for 2 bucks :)

I'm sure I can find a use for them casually, since I don't have any Damnations (obvs), but was just wondering. I've never traded, but I assume it would be tough to find someone willing to trade for them at approx. their current "value" of $4 USD?

Honestly you should probably just hold on them at this point. Being in a core set they probably only have room to grow from here.

It's a perfectly fine EDH card.

holy shit finally got play some standard today

This is what I brought

LI2OkYU.gif

needless to say I won everything

Had an intense game playing against Coco Elves.

They won the first game, but after side boarding in 2x Anger of the Gods, 1x Damnation, 1x Jund Charm, 1x Grafdiggers Cage, 1x Night of Souls' Betrayal... I won games 2 and 3.

Had a rough day today at a local PPTQ, but I did have one great moment when I Deflecting Palm'd an Infect player to death. He G.Probed me so he knew I had the Palm, but then he played Monastery Siege (?) and passed. I played a Lavamancer, just keeping up 2 mana and hoping he'd take that as a green light to swing house and he did. Came at me for lethal infect, I played the Palm, he pointed out Monastery Siege, so I invited him to read the wording of Deflecting Palm. Sad!

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah baby

Deflecting Palm is the best fucking tech for Infect ever

doesn't target you or a player. Source of my choice bitches!

And the flavor feels fucking AMAZING too. Like INCOMING HIT, WAIT! BAM! DEFLECT! YOU'RE DEAD. Feels like a monk and shit.

the lady on it looks like my wife

Back from playing a ton of commander and did really well with Deploy Superfriends.
It was just 3 of us and one player has fairly under or overtuned lists depending on how you look at it (linear and zero answers). Some observations

Mana Crypt is a stupefyingly dumb card and deserves to be banned from EDH stat. One game I was stuck on 2 lands for the first 7 or 8 turns and I played up to 7 drops (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Coalition Relic)

There's little middle ground to superfriends, either I'm barely holding on with PWs or I'm dominating with them.

Mind's Dilation is really hit or miss. I got it out asap and one of the players had a populate deck that already had an engine going so one of them stopped playing shit and the other just kept attacking me. I fell all the way down to 4 with a mana crypt and vault in play when the populate player finally played something post combat and flipped a Desolation Twin giving me 2 10/10s. I had just enough mana and life to lose the flip pay the untap costs for mana crypt and play Ajani Steadfast (+1/+1 vigilance lifelink) to gain 11 life of the Desolation Twin. Stabilized from there with Narset and -2'd Chandra Firebrand (copy next instant sorcery) into a stormherd + Gideon AoZ to make 36 2/2 Pegasi.

I underestimated OG Ajani all these years, his life gain is actually impactful. Got to ultimate him for his avatar.

Who came up with Tamiyo and Venser's Emblem? Both are oppressive af. Venser lets me shoot down lands and shit and Tamiyo is all sorts of ridiculous. I drew Lotus Petal right when I was able to ultimate her and realized that was just infinite mana and storm if I cared to, I don't have any storm.

Chandra Flamecaller is such a draw engine.

JTMS is pretty much unsummon x 3

I have zero answers in the deck to anything.

About a week ago I played Commander and there was a BW player who cast
Sorin, Solemn Visitor.

Holy shit his emblem goes on the board fast.

+1: Until your next turn, creatures you control get +1/+0 and gain lifelink.
−2: Put a 2/2 black Vampire creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
−6: You get an emblem with "At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, that player sacrifices a creature."

Tamiyo's recent art really makes me pine for moonfolk. I understand WotC wants to stay as far away from Kamigawa as possible, but I personally thought their art design (not necessarily a lot of the crappy art we got from the artists from the block) was really cool. It's the same reason why I like the Efreet and Djinn from Tarkir.

I actually liked a lot of the story stuff even. I wouldn't mind a retooled return.

I (and mostly everyone at my store) LOVED Kamigawa. Champions was great, was great limited, everyone loved having a million legendary creatures. Betrayers was great, we got freaking ninjas!, limited was still great. Then Saviours came and ruined everything, I don't know whose idea was to make an entire set revolve around "wisdom" and cards in hand matter, but I hope he or she is no longer at WotC.

Tinsman is not. (did RoE, blatantly clashed with MaRo on NWO)

Show and Tell is a scary Cube card. I drafted it alongside Griselbrand, Emrakul, Progenitus, Demonic and Grim Tutor, but you never know what your opponent is gonna flip. Actually lost a game after getting Griselbrand out.

Is there a story here? I'm a Tinsman fan and even bought his book.

By the way MaRo indirectly talks about Tinsman re: RoE and AVR, they did not see eye to eye on design. Very specifically on NWO, which MaRo blames for the set not selling well.

It's part of the reason BFZ being done by MaRo was such a mistake because he's so incredibly negative on RoE that he never understood what people actually liked about it.

I love Maro, but it drives me absolutely insane every time he talks about RoE. He ALWAYS uses the exact same example—"enfranchised players liked the limited format, but it really confused casual players, because they take 2/2's for 2 mana, expecting them to be good in limited, and the set was built so that they weren't. We don't like to trap players like that." And every time I'm screaming "ARRGGGH THE ONLY 2/2's FOR 2 THAT DIDN'T HAVE LEVEL-UP WAS GLORY SEEKER AND NEST INVADER AND NEST INVADER WAS AMAZING AND EVERY LEVEL-UP 2/2 WAS TOTALLY VIABLE SO YOUR ENTIRE BEEF WITH THE SET WAS THAT GLORY SEEKER WAS WORSE THAN IT USUALLY IS? THAT'S YOUR ENTIRE PROBLEM WITH IT?! A SINGLE CARD IS DOWNGRADED FROM MEDIOCRE TO BAD?!" I swear that is his ONLY example of how RoE limited was too hard for casuals and he has used it 20+ times on his blog and podcast and it is COMPLETELY WRONG.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Phew, about halfway through the first run of my cube contest entry. Went through every card made since new phyrexia. I'll keep going back until I hit every card, then I'm gonna start shaving back down to 540 as I streamline the theme.

I wouldn't read too much personal drama into Brian Tinsman's departure -- he left right after Avacyn Restored (which WotC inexplicably considers a huge success) and went to Zynga, which sadly means he got something like a $40k raise in the process. Rosewater definitely had a hot and cold relationship with Brian's design ideas though given the way various stories involving him have been told.

I love Maro, but it drives me absolutely insane every time he talks about RoE.

He didn't get it. I feel the need to run a little defense in these cases because Mark Rosewater is the only person at WotC who both has the job of getting everything and also the public accountability on it -- most current and former R&D people are pretty opinionated about cards, mechanics, and sets they don't think are good, but they can keep quiet about it. Maro does a lot to stretch what he understands about different parts of the game and (more importantly) institutionalized the idea that there are different audiences to serve so it's not even always necessary that he gets something, but in this case (like with Commander) he really visibly doesn't understand the appeal and therefore makes fundamental errors when trying to reason about how to improve or follow up on it.

At least w/ Commander he knows not to touch it.

Well like everyone he hired to be his junior auxiliary is a huge Commander nut so they can just handle it; with ROE there were certainly people who could do a better job in general withe Eldrazi but I'm not sure there was anyone (after Tinsman left) who was really gonna go to the mat for the set as a whole.

I agree with MaRo. RoE is bottom tier. So much useless chaff unless your deck is dedicated to a specific archetype and even then you have bears that are unplayable. Then you have bombs at common with possibly the worst way to make auras relevant.

Fucking excuse me? Best set for art they have ever done.

He also fears that anything they do in Commander sets "precident" to people who send him a dozen tumblr/twitter posts each day. I bet he regrets ever printing Harmonize, for example, because he constantly gets questions about why Green doesn't get more card drawing.

Avacyn restored is a great commander set.lol

The main issues with AVR is that it is a fundamentally broken limited format (a true example of what happens when you don't allow removal), and that the Miracle mechanic requires you to change the motions you have been using your entire time playing, which leads to super bad feels when you draw your card like you have since you were 10 and then realize you can't now cast it for it's miracle cost.

I'm giving them a pass on the fact that it was a tonal shift from Innestrad, because Innestrad did a lot of risky things and making an Angel set is about the safest hedge you could ever make

Wait, I realised magiccards.info is up to date again with EDM and C2, since when did that happen? At least the best Magic site is alive again.

MagicGAF, how can I update my modern deck? I haven't played since with this deck since January and now Eldrazi and Naya Company are kicking my ass. The general consensus at my LGS is that it's too slow/non-combo for the current meta. I was thinking of a few different decks:

Abzan Company
B/G Elves
G/W Hatebears

I'd like to avoid having to buy Tarmogoyf, Cavern of Souls, or LotV if at all possible. I own a good amount of staples besides enemy fetches, Horizon Canopy, and the three cards I mentioned.

How about some kind of Evolution / Chord deck?
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/466044#paper

The one that I linked uses one Kiki. And I really like Eldritch Evolution.

I would think the most direct overlap is either Abzan Company or Kiki-Chord. Kiki-Chord doesn't really run enemy fetches; at the least you can get away without playing Arid Mesa and it can chord for Reclamation Sage against Blood Moon.

quick question, what kind of mana symbol is this (seen it on a number of cards and it confuses me)
Image.ashx

Gatherer says it's one generic mana, but those used to have a 1 symbol, no?

They changed it about a year ago, to differentiate colorless mana (which is what the new symbol represents but used to be signified by {1}) from generic mana (which is what {1} actually represents)

Really think it's odd they introduced it as a Kozilek mechanic but made it evergreen. I get the why but not the how and it was a complete waste using it for so few cards.

That's truly colourless mana, which you can use to cast spells that require colourless mana (such as Kozilek, the Great Distortion). The 1 or 2 you see is actually generic mana cost, which means that you can pay any colour of mana to pay for that cost. They differentiated from this so it became clear that the two symbols (generic mana cost and colourless mana added) aren't the same thing.
