Earth Defense Force 5's enemies are literally called “Immigrants"

By something being lost in translation I don't mean a translation error, but it being perceived differently by different groups. I doubt that the developers were thinking of anything except for immigrANTS being a neat pun. But for a lot of people in NA and EU countries, they're first though would be the current issues with immigrants and the refugee crisis.

| fully expect the name to be changed when it is localized.

And they'll likely just be called "Ravagers", again, which is the de facto name of the alien hoards in the localized versions.

Not sure what the problem is.. These are aliens trying to take over earth yea? Is it disrespectful to human immigrants to be compared with ants?

EDF isnt a serious game so I dont think its supposed to invoke feelings of human immigrants.

/edit/ Im an idiot

Engrish is fun.
Simple explanation: They probably used a thesaurus to find a synonym for "alien".

Extraterrestrials would have been a better choice.

Wat

As an immigrant in a family of immigrants, and sees other immigrants constantly dehumanized and demonized, that people don't see a problem with using that specific word to describe a faction of monstrous violent invaders that the player kills is bizarre to me.

agreed this topic feels like complaining for the sake of complaining

it could be a pun - immigrants

and it could be word substitution - here in the U.S. we can call illegal immigrants illegal aliens, which is another potential pun

or the translator sucks at english, an equal possibility

and it's true, the aliens are immigrating to earth

Not that it matters, since they are using English, but the Japanese text right next to it says 異星文明イミグラント, which would translate to Alien Civilization Immigrant. They are purposefully using the English word "Immigrant," which probably isn't all that familiar to Japanese audiences, rather than the typical Japanese word one might use.

So, yeah, bad choice of English words, but the original Japanese doesn't really have the same connotations.

All of the names they choose for this series are purposefully made to sound like they're from very cheesy sci-fi B-movies from a bygone era.

Aye,
Was gonna say if it's IMMIGRANTS in the JP version, it's always, always been RAVAGERS in the US since forever ago.

That was the EDF 3-4 continuity. In EDF 2 Vita they're called Buggernauts.

lmao wat.

Also the non Sandlot EDF:Insect Armageddon is also Ravagers.
Buggernauts though... I wish they would use that instead. It fits so much better into the theme of the game. Holy fuck lol.

Military game jerking off on nationalistic propaganda? Tell me something new. Most war games are unbearable pieces of shit with their depictions of the "enemies" too. Not sure what's more offensive tbh. They're all trash games anyway, glorifying the utter failure of man.

I'm pretty sure I played an older RPG that used "immigrants" to describe magical invaders/doppelgangers, but my memory is fuzzy...

oh my god

EDF is a militaristic/patriotic game now? Maybe you should stop talking about what you don't know.

Let get ready to get offended >.< Immigrant is a word, everyone has a right to use the word. There is always that power of not buy there product....

This isn't new for EDF.

The enemies in EDF 3 and 4 are called "Foreigners" (「フォーリナー」) in the Japanese.
See: http://www.d3p.co.jp/edf4/#foreigner

I am sure that, like the Ravagers of EDF 2017 and EDF 2025, their name will be changed for the US release.

Why didn't they just build a huge wall around Earth?

In seriousness this coming from Japan is not shocking in the least. The country would rather die out from depopulation than support immigration
