Pepe used to be so happy...
How did everything go so wrong?
Yeah if that was their idea of millennial outreach it was pretty pathetic. Basically my 62 year old mother if she had to explain the internet. If it was aimed at older demographics, I'm not sure what purpose it served at all.I put the blame on Hillary for having an article about it written on her election site and on news stations for doing reports on things they don't understand.

This is almost as bad as when Fox news did a report on 4chan a decade ago or CNN doing "Who is this 4chan guy" a couple years ago. News stations should stay out of internet memes.
But Harambre is a racist and rape culture symbol, man. Get with the times.I still have Harambe.
for now
how is that even legal? But Harambre is a racist and rape culture symbol, man. Get with the times.
Clemson University bans references to Harambe for promoting racism, rape culture

Yes let's put the blame on Hilary. Not actual white supremacist for using the meme to their benefit.I put the blame on Hillary for having an article about it written on her election site and on news stations for doing reports on things they don't understand.

She's allowing inaccurate information on her website where a lot of people look up to her. Many people will take that as fact and believe it, so she is in part responsible for why people think this. One might also argue that her high position also means that she's to be held to a higher standard than most, as what she does and thinks influences those who listen to her.Yes let's put the blame on Hilary. Does it feel good man?Remember when it was just about peeing with your pants off? I do it for you, Pepe!
I'll take "signs the ADL doesn't understand the internet" for $1000, Alex.
I can add "kill jews man" to any picture i want, that doesn't make it a racist dog whistle. Sigh.

So basically Pepe is racist, except for all the times it's not.
joining the ranks of the swastika and the Confederate battle flag
So Hyrule were racists and Ganondorf was the good guy all along!
“We basically mixed Pepe in with Nazi propaganda, etc. We built that association,” one prominent white supremacist told the Daily Beast.
OK you did that on purposeSo Hyrule were racists and Ganondorf was the good guy all along!
Came to post this.
Oh shit, the hoodcaught in the act LINK!
Why is this one organization the official record and final decider of what is racist and what isn't? Maybe they took a sub-sub-subgroup of the_donald trolls and wanted to make a point and get some headlines out of it? Maybe we can just ignore them and still use a harmless stupid cartoon meme just like before, in millions of unrelated situations?
Or not, I dunno. Something something Trump something something racism.

The majority of uses of Pepe the Frog have been, and continue to be, non-bigoted. However, it was inevitable that, as the meme proliferated in on-line venues such as 4chan, 8chan, and Reddit, which have many users who delight in creating racist memes and imagery, a subset of Pepe memes would come into existence that centered on racist, anti-Semitic or other bigoted themes.
In recent years, with the growth of the "alt right" segment of the white supremacist movement, a segment that draws some of its support from some of the above-mentioned Internet sites, the number of "alt right" Pepe memes has grown, a tendency exacerbated by the controversial and contentious 2016 presidential election. Though Pepe memes have many defenders, not least the character's creator, Matt Furie, who has called the alt right appropriation of the meme merely a "phase," the use of racist and bigoted versions of Pepe memes seems to be increasing, not decreasing.
However, because so many Pepe the Frog memes are not bigoted in nature, it is important to examine use of the meme only in context. The mere fact of posting a Pepe meme does not mean that someone is racist or white supremacist. However, if the meme itself is racist or anti-Semitic in nature, or if it appears in a context containing bigoted or offensive language or symbols, then it may have been used for hateful purposes.
