This is interesting. I wonder if this person saved the sticker/barcode thing that you get with Xbox games because they thought it would be like the equivalent of keeping registration/warranty cards with other systems?

Maybe this will become the gold standard for "complete" in the future...

I use to stick it to the back of the receipt and then put it under the manual in the case. Don't know why I did that but I did.

I tore that shit off haphazardly and threw it out right before opening up and smelling the inside of the case like some sort of coke fiend.

Japan. It's from this eBay listing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Phantom-D...e-/252562974164?&_trksid=p2056016.m2516.l5255

We never got it in PALand :'(

Oh. That explains it.

Keeping paper spine sleeves is very common for CDs, including CD games like on Saturn or PS1. I guess this guy thought it was a good idea for his xbox game's plastic thingy.

I think for more rare stuff the presence of that thing increases it's resale value, but for stuff that sells for peanuts anyway it doesn't seem to affect value much at all.

wow, yeah, that hori looks great! had no idea it worked on all those systems too

It's absolutley retro. Has been for a bit in many people's minds. Nows the time to grab niche titles on those platforms.

definitely, some PS2 (and many GC) things have gone up but lots are still cheap, great time for xbox as well

It's hard to think that way, but I would now consider that generation retro, based on the number of years.

For example, using North American release dates, the PS2 is turning 16 years old this year. When the PS2 launched in 2000, the NES was 15 years old. I think back in 2000, we would've called the NES "Retro".

this is totally how i think, yeah - most just say 2 gens back is retro, but NES totally was in 2000

I think it would take a fundamental departure from how those games were played. For example, should VR become mainstream versus gaming on a 2D screen.

that's an interesting way of thinking - is it a 3D gaming thing? i imagine you'd call PSX retro, no?

So how long will it be till 360/PS3 is considered retro?

Is the DC, GB, Xbox, PS2 era hitting that mark now?

its just crazy to me how old some of this stuff is now and it doesnt seem that long ago

Everything's retro in my book once most people stop paying attention and you can grab stuff from the bargain bin. lol

Technically true, and it is definitely time to buy rare PSWii60 games.

But the issue I have with thinking of PS360 as being retro is that the games play identically to PS4Bone games. The paradigm hasn't changed, like it did most gen transitions before. The prime paradigm defining consoles of each era - VCS-NES-SNES-PS1/N64(shared)-PS2 - so much change between each.

This applies to a lot of GC/PS2 as well, except that they were designed for CRTs, Nintendo's a slightly weird example, but I played through Wind Waker HD this year, and it could have been a brand new game and would have fit right in.

Okay I'm going in on a supergun. So I can have the real deal with my favourite arcade games.

Any recommendations/tips from anyone?

You might want to look into this:

http://arcadeforge.net/Supergun-MAK-Strike/Supergun-MAK-Strike::74.html

And good luck with arcade pcbs of your fav games, it's pricey and there are many games that are hard to find.

Coin op express is one site to look up arcade pcbs though.
Is that a personal recommendation?

I've done my searching and have a bunch i'm looking at, including that one and their deluxe all in one.

Trying to work out if I go cheap to find my feet, then upgrade later, or go all out to start with.

For an easy to set up super gun it is.=p

Yeah that site I listed has a lot of them that aren't on ebay and such, and while quite a bit are under 100 bucks and 200, many range from 200-400 bucks and higher on average. A few are in the 1k range even.

Get a Naomi! You just need an JVS I/O and a PSU (even PC PSU's can work.)

Since it's cart-based, PCBs aren't too expensive (yet?) I'm in the midst of selling my Naomi Universal cab because I don't have space for it, but I'm keeping my consolized mainboard. It's basically Dreamcast in expert-mode lol.

Has anyone tried the Smallcab super guns?? I'm super tempted to pick one up because they are so tiny and cheap.

Sega Falcom?

Jointly owned dev studio set up by Sega and Falcom to make MD / MCD titles. They did Lord Monarch and the two Dragon Slayer games on Mega Drive, along with a number of cancelled Mega CD titles including Ys IV, Super Brandish, and Super Daisenryaku III.

Supergun-wise I got myself a cheapo Vogatek and rewired a Sanwa-modified Hori EX2 I had lying around for the controls.

Not pretty, but it lets me play Raimais.

Any tips on rare and good games from that gen we should pick up now?

What genres are you into?

I've always been in the mind set of if I buy this will/would I play it. I don't get games because I think they may become rare. I get them because they interest me.

That being said for me at least some Atlus games, Aksys Games and their collectors editions.

Reminds me I need to find/get the reg edition of Catherine for PS3 as well as find the censored version cover it. I have the collectors edition for Xbox 360.

Probably missed the boat for many last gen games, English language Asian PS3 exclusives, and JP X360 exclusives are generally already expensive.

XB1 JP games see such low print numbers that surely many will hold their value in the future.

Right, lots of SHMUP examples on X360. On PS3 Aquanauts Holiday Asian English version is $150 easily.

PSN title "The Last Guy" got a physical release in Japan (Japanese only, I think), and an English/Chinese release in Asia. It's a great game, but looking on Ebay the last one sold for $180, and the only one available to buy now is priced the same. Of course, if you only care about playing you can buy for a lot cheaper on PSN, but as an investment? Probably too late (although maybe it will further increase in price in the future).

As an American, my favorite Turrican game is Super Turrican; it's an exceptional run & gun. Second would be Mega Turrican. After that I'm not sure, but it'd be Turrican 2/Universal Soldier and Super Turrican 2. All four of those games are A-grade classics for sure, they're great. As for the first game though, it's okay but frustrating and not nearly as good as the later ones thanks to blind jumps, some design issues, etc. The later games improve hugely over it.

I own every Turrican game :p Even the shitastic Genesis games by Accolade (Universal Soldier and Turrican)
Yes, they have their issues, but you're being way too hard on the Genesis versions of the first two games. Sure, they're downgraded from the Amiga in a lot of ways, but they're competent versions of the games. Comparing the console versions of the first Turrican, the TurboGrafx-16 and Game Boy versions both cut some levels out, but the Genesis version is complete, for one thing. Of the console versions of Turrican, the Genesis version is clearly the best one. The graphics and sound are better on the Genesis than the other two versions as well. And as much as the music is definitely worse, at least you get better controls with multiple buttons. But on the other hand, am I remembering right that they made you lose health way faster on consoles? If so that's pretty annoying.

As for Universal Soldier, obviously it's much better on Genesis than Game Boy, comparing the two released ports. The unreleased SNES version is about the same though I think. But on the Genesis, the game has seriously downgraded music versus the amazing Amiga soundtrack, but it still sounds good. They do also cut the shmup levels, which is too bad, but the new levels that replace them are solidly fun, so that at least partially makes up for it; they didn't just cut stuff without adding anything new. And sure, the graphical overhaul some of the sprites got is silly, but it's the same game underneath that so that doesn't bother me. And it adds password saving to the game too, which is great. Universal Soldier is the only Turrican game with saving, and more should have had it too.

Turrican 3 is better than Mega Turrican though, but only slightly
Better sound on Amiga v. better graphics and controls on Genesis. Easy Genesis win there, up to jump is the worst!

Plug a Mega Drive pad into your Amiga (same controller socket) and you get the option for controller support, therefore you get a separate button to jump. So I'd say with that the Amiga version is better if you use this setup - great controls just like the MD version and an amazing soundtrack (which is a huge draw for any Turrican game for me.

Im into most genres really, action games, rpgs and so on. And for me its also to play the games, not really to invest. Catherine is a good example of what Im looking for, that game looks pretty good and can easily become expensive.

I've answered this before with the same game, but it can't be repeated enough... Okami HD. Import it, have it on disc, and feel great about having the most aesthetically beautiful game ever made in a physical format.

High bit color, no jaggies, cel shading, calligraphy art style. All technical and artistic aspects come together perfectly to make a visually pure game. Absolutely gorgeous.

Its only availible on disc in japanese though right?

Also im guessing there is no reason to play the PS2 version? No missing effects?

It's a Japan only release, but it's in full English if your system's language is set to English. It is better than the ps2 version in basically every way, except that the credits theme at the end is different. Oddly enough, the disc version does have the original credits theme, but it only plays if your system is set to Japanese. Weird.

Cool, so there wasnt an Asian version then? Just wondering since there are some Amazon listing for it.

I think i'd go after the "best" version since it seems like its bundled with a soundtrack disc?

English subs are on the JP disc. My PS2 copy is officially retired. The only slight issue that might just be in my imagination is that I think there's some small highlight effect I'm seeing in youtube videos missing on the PS3 that makes the ground textures look almost bioluminescent on PS2. It may have even been a design choice in favor of the added sharpness of real texture filtering in the PS3 version. Again, I'm not 100% positive if I'm really seeing a missing effect there though. Paper filter set to high looks the most legit too.

The fang loading screen mini game is broken/missing On the PS3 version, but it's easy to overlook because load times appear beter on the PS3 and that really deminishes your chances to score fangs... fair trade off in my book. PS3 version supports move also.

I still don't understand why so many people emphasise that damn song so much though. lol. It's there on the JP disc apparantly, but I couldn't care less. it's not like the main theme of the game or anything.

I downloaded Okami HD for like a dollar on sale one day a few years back.

I lost my patience at the intro screen and never picked it back up. It was way too dialogue heavy for my tastes.

I like heavy reading... books though. And I occasionally like it in RPGs too. But not when it comes to Japanese-translated dialogue text. It just isn't well written at all.

It's hard for me say go play this game or that game because this gen is so fresh and it's like whatever to me.

But really if you look at trends and whats popular now or could be I say those games could be worthwhile for example the SMT and persona series games.I looked at Catherine and said oh i like the art style, i like puzzle games good fit.

An easy example for this is Nippon Ichi Software games. The Disgaea series which can be branched off into their other games like the Prinny games for psp. What did they also put out, Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle: Tactics, Phantom Brave, Soul Nomad and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.

Since I hate anime as what some people call them Weeaboo shit, you'll never see me in a thread about Hyperdimension Neptunia, or Senran Kagura games. I will not buy that stuff nor am I interested. I see the value in them in the future as they are popular but not for me. Compile Heart, and Idea Factory games are no to me.

I'll post some Wii and DS from my collection for games I think might be worth something in the future. The mario and zelda crap everyone knows will be worth something but the off beat stuff that'll be in demand or other games from the series that could be worth something.

Haha, yeah I think your answer might even have been to me, since I have asked this question a few times. I own the Wii-version of Okami though, and it was just way too slow for me unfortunately. Got tired of all the reading and the pretty boring combat. But I do agree that the game was really, really beautiful!

Any tips on rare and good games from that gen we should pick up now?

I don't focus on rare games but I've been really building out digital games, especially digital only stuff any time a sale comes up. Once the stores are gone, they're gone for good, so I want to have pretty much anything good ready to go with full disk backups available in case of disk failure. Eventually I want to have everything running on solid state but I might as well wait until prices on that get even cheaper.

It's really funny to hear people complain about the digital future, saying they refuse to buy anything that doesn't have a physical release. Like... now is the time to buy, while it's still available. 20 years from now when PSN no longer exists for PS3 is when we're fucked. For now, just buy anything good when it's on sale, while you still can.

Plus my digital backups, with some care, will outlive any disc you can ever get your hands on.

And even i am moderately surprised

All the Cave shmups - they're actually not too bad for the X360 (outside of Muchi Muchi Pork/Ibara BL double pack which is creeping up and up and up, and the DDP super special edition)

Ketsui on PS3 had hit the bargain bins half a year ago (980 yen) but that's now back up to around 3980 yen. It's going to be harder to find. Likewise the Ketsui DS game is also going to keep rising (see also : Space Invaders Extreme 1 + 2)

Generally, shmups have always tended to rise in price. The Battle Garegga Special Edition on PS4 is probably going to have a similar rise in later years.

PS3/X360 though : Neir seems an obvious one, Vanquish is 108 yen pretty much everywhere, Catherine is cheap, Demon Souls, All the Capcom retro rereleases, as per above Okami HD, Bayonetta, - also noticed that late cycle PS3 / PS4 releases that the PS3 versions are getting more and more expensive (Diablo, DQ Builders etc).

Obvious new entry in the woah that got expensive : any physical version of Outrun 2 on any platform.
