I wouldn't expect touch control to be a large thing on this. Games should work in all modes, so touch controls can only be optional (for inventories and such?). But concepts like elite beat agents is not something for this machine.

Games can have multiple controls schemes like always. Yes touch heavy games like EBA probably wouldn't work, but even a game like Wonderful 101 which was touch heavy had alternate schemes

What a Dumb name.

Ew that name.

Terrible name.

What's with the hate? In my opinion it's a perfect name. It instantly tells everything you need to know: It's a Nintendo console where you can switch the way you play it. The name doesn't sound like ambulance voice (Wii U), an add-on to previous console (WiiMote, Wii U, WiiMote...), pissing (Wii), sound childish (Wii and Wii U again), or first console instead of the third (XBox One), doesn't have a dumb abbreviation (XBone), doesn't have a confusing list of letters, (DS, DSi, DSi XL)... I seriously can't think of anything negative about Nintendo Switch.

Sure the name isn't super "innovative", but people who buy the console for themselves only care about the specs. Simple and clear name helps all the parents/aunts/other people oblivious about gaming.

I really hope this thing has a standard usb charging port. If the only way to charge it is through a propietary port in the dock this thing will be useless to take out for a weekend. If you have to take the dock with you it kind of defeats the purpose.

Do we know anything about that?

My biggest issue (judging from the video) is the fact that the controllers are so small, it looks so strange an uncomfortable.

Based on that reveal trailer, the Switch looks like everything I had hoped it would be.

And more. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Skyrim. I still kind of don't believe it.

The key thing here is Ubisoft sort of hinted at attracting back casuals with NX aka Switch. And their strongest casual game is Just Dance. If Just Dance will be a Switch game at some point then you need those motion controls in the gut of the Joycon.

As for touch controls, well the games they featured does not need touch controls so it makes sense not to see them in the trailer. We have to verify, but I'm fairly certain it is a feature of the portable side of things if they want to bring more franchises to the platform.
im not disagreeing but Just Dance is realeased in platforms without motion controls, they even support an app to use your mobile device.

The games chosen is also not an evidence, since they could have easily used any other ones from their extensive catalogue that were pertinent to the type of interface they wanted to show.

i think the target demographic of the video and a more serum like administration of the platform features is why we havent seen the touch and motion controls yet. But, in the end we are in agreement that we' ll see the other alternative control methods in the final product.

And of course the other conclusion was that we'll see videos just like the unveil one but dedicated to these alternative control methods.

Really looking forward to picking up a Switch, but also very interested to see how this will function as a tablet. If you're selling something with the form factor of a tablet to people who are used to tablets, it really needs to function as a tablet when you're not gaming on it. That means getting all the big streaming services onboard, a solid browser and a nice App Store equivalent.

@plsburydoughboy @LaurakBuzz Motion controls are back. No idea on wiimote compatibility.

She's saying motion controls are there so that's great for me.

I'd like to know about the input lag. Playing Fifa on the Wii U GamePad is a joy thanks to the minimal lag, and for this reason I prefer to play it there than on my TV.

Hope it will be the same.

We don't, but it's to be assumed you can charge it while in portable mode. I'd hope for USB as well but good chance it's instead a Nintendo charging port like the 3DS one or the Wii U gamepad one.

I'm always skeptic of new things, but this is going to finally solve my problem with having to choose between the home console or handheld version of a game. Being able to "switch" betwen the train in the mornings and the couch in the evening in an almost seamless fashion is a dream made true for me. Like crossave on Vita / PS4 or switching between GBA and the gameboy player.

Since the game would be running directly off of the internal guts of the Switch (not the dock), there should be zero input lag. It's not streaming.

EDIT: did FIFA come out on Wii U or are you taking the piss?

This might be Nintendo's best gimmick, IMO. It's super creative, it's super practical, and it's immediately obvious. It's such a "no duh" gimmick, and one that no one's going to be scratching their heads about like they did with the Wii U.

Well, aside that guy who was confused by the fact that if he takes it out of the house, that no one in his house can play it until returned anyways.

This is pressed Seth sick, IMO and I usually shit all over Nintendo. Now just come out with some 3rd party gamez.

Has anyone done some size comparisons based on matching screen sizes? It shouldn't be too hard to get a rough estimate on the size, right? I'm wondering how closely the revealed product matches the leaked devkit dimensions, but at a glance it looks like it could be close.

Some observations, the stand for the back of the Switch looks flimsy (during the airplane section), doesn't look sturdy enough for when it's get a little bumpy on public transport.

The local co-op scenes don't seem realistic; the screen is just too small for comfort. Could this be Nintendo's reason for the (holographic) projection R&D/patents they've been doing. Because that would be great solution.
This is one of them: "Nintendo Patents Projector That Displays Flat Images On Uneven Surfaces ": http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1283078

Come on, now.

I hope that the switch will have these features :
- smartphone connectivity which notifies you of any update you receive on your terminal and allows you to pick up calls directly from the switch
- a slot for 4G enabled sims for online gaming
- ability to tether with your smartphone to leverage its 4G connectivity to play online if you don't want to pay for a separate plan only for your switch.

If it'll have all of these features it will be much less of a burden to carry it out wherever I go.

The controllers have motion capability that doesn't need a camera and the screen is 1080p then there is no reason why Nintendo couldn't ship a VR helmet for this where the screen just slips in.

I bet this thing will cost $299. Fingers are crossed that the base model is $299. It would be funny if a new Splatoon was called Spla2oon.

Yeah. I'm not a fan of Nintendo, but the name is good. It conveys the main concept of a dual-use portable/fixed console. It's reasonably memorable and doesn't sound stupid.
The only possible complaint is that "Switch" sounds a bit mundane, but compared to what. The dynamic and powerful names of the "4" or the "1"?

The biggest problem will be competing with a decent tablet. I think Nintendo have made another moderately successful niche console that will appeal to fans of Mario/Zelda and not many others.

Yeah I own both so I know their love for propietary charging ports in this day and age. The problem if it's not USB is I doubt they will supply you with an extra charger besides the dock, because it's Nintendo.

Pretty impressed/surprised by there design. I hope it works out for them!

Curious about how they will handle battery management as I can only assume that it be continuously trickle charging when you play on a TV through its base. So hopefully they have some type of removable/spare battery at an affordable cost.

That's how I burned out my laptop battery while in school as power was always in high demand, so you charged it when you could for mobility and just incase you couldn't find an outlet later.

Great gimmick. I'm definitely sold but only because I want to play a new Zelda on a new console.

My main concern is battery though. Realistically the battery can't be more than 5-6hours right? That's probably the best we can hope for.

It may be too soon to ask but is the rumor mill churning in terms of software? We know we're not getting anything until next year and the next 2 months will be excruciating waiting on actual games, I'm going to need Emily or Laura to pick up Nintendo's slack.

I mean, there's plenty of sensible speculation to go around. Them incorporating a holographic projector is not sensible speculation.

Should've left out the holographic part, since just being able to project with the Switch would suffice as a solution to the otherwise "tiny" screen for local co-op purposes.
Why do you believe it's not sensible speculation?
There are mobile phones that can project. And apparently even have touch interface on the projected surface: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qY_m5s3b8C8

Well, for one, 'holographic projection' is little more than a buzzword.

And sure there are a handful of concept phones with pico projectors in them. But those come with colossal downsides. The tech is not yet feasible for a mass-market product like this, is way too expensive and comes with a huge power draw.

And for what? Let's not act like ad-hoc split-screen multiplayer is this vast untapped market just screaming to be exploited. Like I said, it's not sensible speculation right now.

Nintendo need to have a 2nd trailer.

Switch needs gimmicks for mass market
I'm talking
Touchscreen
Motion
Camera
And Mic

This time the theme should be Switch controls

Scene 1
Show a girl playing Nintendogs on the TV playing fetch using motion controls of the Joy Con.
Girl gets a call. Then goes out and undocks the Switch and now the girl takes the dog for a walk. The dog has a leash and she pets the dog with the touchscreen. Screen shows how many steps she has taken etc. She meets up with her boyfriend in the park and uses AR feature and watches the Dog run around in the park.

Scene 2
Guy plays Pikmin using Pointer controls at home on the TV. Guy then undocks the Switch and now plays Pikmin only using the touchscreen in the bus.

Scene 3
2 Switches are set up against eachother like the NBA part of the first trailer. 2 people here play tablet tennis and face off against each other using the motion controls.

Scene 4
Old man plays Brain Age using mic and touchscreen controls in on his desk.

Scene 5
Kid creates a level on Mario Maker using touchscreen on his ay back from school. Goes home and docks the Switch. Him and his brother grab a Joy Con each and play 2 player Mario Maker.
