Tomb Raider is 20 years old, Lara debuted on the Sega Saturn Oct 25th 1996 in the UK!

So, according to information online...

Tomb Raider was originally released on the Sega Saturn in the UK on October 25th, 1996. Which would now mark today as the 20th anniversary of the franchise!

While many people will think of the original Tomb Raider series as a Playstation 1 franchise, the first Tomb Raider game actually started development on the Sega Saturn and served as the lead development platform for the PS1 and MS-DOS versions.

Because of this, the Saturn version of the game was actually released roughly three and a half weeks before the Playstation 1 and MS-DOS PC versions of the game. Which were later released on November 14th 1996 for both the Europe and North American regions. The North American version of the Sega Saturn game was also released on November 14th 1996, despite having an early EU release date.

(Saturn screenshots taken from SSF Emulator. Sorry screenshot purists, maybe you guys can do better?)

While I am not from the UK or ever lived in the UK, the Saturn version of Tomb Raider was the first version of the game that I ever played and owned. It was my introduction into Tomb Raider, and at the time I thought it was quite an amazing experience. While, IMO, Tomb Raider on the Sega Saturn was not the best version of the game, as it had some serious frame rate issues in larger environments, ran at a lower resolution and lacked gourad shading and lighting of the PS1/ PC versions (as well as HW acceleration of the PC game), it was still an interesting example of what could be done with the Saturn's hardware. I honestly played this one a lot until I found a version of the game for MS-DOS at a discounted price. I really didn't get a chance to play the PS1 game until many years later.

Comparison between the Saturn and PS1 version of the game:

Multi-Platform North American Release. November 14th 1996 and a little bit beyond that...
On November 14th 1996, Tomb Raider saw North American releases for the PS1, MS-DOS PC and Sega Saturn, while in Europe the PlayStation and PC versions were released on November 22nd 1996. In japan, the PC version of Tomb Raider titled "Tomb Raiders" was released on January 19th 1997 with the Saturn and PS1 versions following months later on February 14th 1997.

The PC also saw a second release of Tomb Raider in 1997 called Tomb Raider Gold, which featured additional levels.

While I won't go to far into detail on this one, I will post a link to DF Retro's: Tomb Raider Analysed on PS1/Saturn/DOS/Win95, which goes into much better detail on the different versions of the game and is an excellent video in general.

If you want to run the PC version on a modern PC in HD, take a look at post 194 in this thread.

This thread isn't meant to be a huge retrospective on the first Tomb Raider game, and I am not really going into heavy research on the game's development. There are so many other videos and articles online that cover the game's development in great detail.

I mostly wanted to focus on the Sega Saturn version. But feel free to talk about the other versions as well.

I fondly remember going to a holiday in London in 1996 and bought this game for my Saturn.

So nostalgic :(

I truly miss those games :/
I've finished Rise of the Tomb Raider a few days ago and I found it pretty disappointing.
I remember when I was a teen that having a new Lara Croft game around Christmas was an amazing moment.

We get reboots with age restarts instead. I would love to see a new Tomb Raider in the style of the original games.
Ah, me too. Really warmed up to its clunkiness after a while; the tank controls are actually perfectly perfunctory for jumping around, you just need a bit of patience.

(They're pretty ass for the combat, though. Sure, the game does all the aiming for you, but the camera's not very good for dodging attacks...)

Tomb Raider debuted in 2nd place in the Sega Saturn top 10 chart, but it couldn't make it into the Compact Disc (all formats) top 10 chart.

UK Week 43, 1996.

Amazing game, the music from the first couple of games still gives me chills, so iconic.

Holy shit, Encarta '97. That thing was like Voodoo magic back in the day. What a chart.

I remember my PS owning mate coming around when I picked this up at launch on my Saturn. He was super jealous as he had to wait for it.

Game was freaking amazing at the time. Looks as clunky as hell now, but this was the future at that time.

The 3D platforming was unique for nearly everyone. Only importers had seen what Mario 64 was doing.

Oh, and that beautiful music. Thank you Core Design, you made a classic.

Though the PS version ended up with better graphics, when I tried them both together back in the day - I could swear that the Saturn version had a slightly better draw distance. Not much, but it was there. DF Retro you know what to do!

I started playing some of the older releases recently, including the first (steam version). It aged, not even terribly well. But you can still get used to Laras tanky controls. The animation still works surprisingly well. And the first still has a great sense of adventure and mystery to it, which I didn't think I would find.
I played some of it as a kid at a friends place. But never beyond the first two worlds. Some of the later games content surprised me. The supernatural stuff, like the mummies are still surprisingly scary. That upper torso boss was amazing. And the Midas trap death became a secret favorite of mine.

Great game, even if it demands a lot of patience to replay. But I can now totally see the appeal it had beyond Laras busty physique. Never played the saturn version though. Interesting to see what changed.

Replayed the first four games not too long ago (still haven't finished TRL but w/e).

The good parts of them are still good. Surprisingly though TR3 was my favourite. Didn't like it as much as a kid because it was so hard.

I never liked Tomb Raider back then, I was on far too much of a Nintendo/Capcom/Namco/Sega/SNK Japanese-driven trip at the time. It even felt a bit weird being a british adult in the mid '90s and wanting nothing to do with it, because we all went nuts over it. However having given it a serious try for the first time over the last year or so, I can see that it's a pretty decent if janky platform puzzler, ahead of its time in many ways.

As an Indiana Jones/adventure superfan I was OBSESSED with this game on my Sega Saturn back in the day. Still in my top 10..

Memorable moments;
1) Lost Valley - First seeing the T-Rex and losing my mind
2) St Francis Folly - When you first step through into that huge vertical puzzle room and the haunting music plays
3) Colosseum + Palace Midas levels

A decade later I realized it was made in my hometown of Derby, and we now have a Lara Croft Way.

This series used to mean the world to me.The classics re-ignited my love for video games and i feel blessed that i was old enough when i played them to appreciate their amazing design and see past the shallow Lara marketing that was throwing its shadow over the stellar gameplay.

Core Design were geniuses but unfortunately they had the bad luck to have a terrible greedy publisher above their heads and whose dirty greasy fingers are still holding tight this franchise (just under a different name) even after continuously raping it for so many years.

Now "Tomb Raider" is Tomb Raider only in name, this series has changed beyond recognition.Unless a miracle happens and SE gives the IP to another studio, true Tomb Raider will remain buried in the darkest and deepest Tomb ever made.

I remember getting OPSM with the TR demo on the cover disc and just going Holy crap! At the giant T-Rex.

Possibly my first ever day one game purchase based on a demo. Amazing game for its time, especially to someone who'd grown up with Spectrums & C64s.

In most cases, they didn't have to. PSone was so insanely popular that developers just flocked to it en masse and barely bothered with the other two.

That was definitely the case over time, but they did pretty much invent the modern day moneyhat early in the gen. They even bought timed (6 months) exclusivity of Mortal Kombat 3.

Remember watching my cousin playing Tomb Raider II one Christmas on the PSOne, looked good. Didn't actually play my first Tomb Raider game until Anniversary came out, then ever since i've been in love with the series.

As good an excuse as any to replay the classic games.. I grew up with this series and it's kinda sad to see how unrecognisable it is now. TR used to be all about exploration and discovery, with the slow pacing of both the level design and the controls really heightening that. Combat was never the main focus, which was good since the combat was awful. (this is where TR2 flopped since it had way too much of it)

I doubt we'll ever get a classic-esque TR again. I'd even take something like Legend, kinda dumbed down and shootery but totally in line with the original series' spirit. Maybe with less headset chatter.

Classic Tomb Raider is so good! Age hasn't made it worse one bit. Figuring out those platforming puzzles is super fun and the way Lara controls is amazing. The controls are so tight, you immediately know if you can make a jump and it has fantastic level design too.
Even the newer trilogy has its merits, though it feels like it sacrifices a lot of the finesse of classic TR for gimmicks.
The reboot... well. It's not an outright bad game, but compared to the brilliance of the earlier titles, it's very mediocre. Cinematic cookie-cutter detective-mode press-x-to-awesome game design. Probably better than letting the IP die, I guess.

One of my favourite series of all time. Still remember going into the Virgin Megastore in Notts during late night shopping and playing the Tomb Raider demo for hours. Got the game that Christmas. Playing it with my dad and brother helping me with the puzzles is one of my fondest gaming memories.

It's been a long time, wow. I haven't played any of the original games in ages. As people have said, good excuse to revisit!

Would be cool to have a Tomb Raider game starring a 40 year old Lara Croft.

Alas, video games and all that.

Oh, man, if only. I remember a great article from Cara Ellison about wanting an older Lara Croft, I unfortunately had trouble finding it. (She has too many amazing Tomb Raider essays. My favourite is her Gaming Made Me love letter to TR.)

By the way, recently a lot of members from the original Core Design (and some from the AoD team) reunited and gave interviews at Play Expo 2016.It was incredible to see all those people getting back together...i wish it was possible they made a new studio all together!

I'm from the city where they were from and now there's a whole road there called Lara Croft Way.
