Is it time for this again?

I dont know what the hell I was thinking hoping Nintendo would finally stop with their always 1 generation behind stuff and at least have a full hd screen. If when docked it has trouble hitting 1080p, will probably skip this Nintendo release for a while.

Seems like they are focusing more on the graduating 3DS gamer than a home console one.
Price would have to be really low for me to get one even for my kids.

The PS4 has trouble hitting 1080p.

This worries me since I have no room to put the console under or above my TV, facing forward.

It needs to be on the side.

Interesting
If I had to guess majority of games will be be either 720p with better affect or 900p when the Switch is docked. Obviously there will be some exceptions like Smash Bros being 1080p and other less demanding games and last gen ports.

I expect GAF to be upset about lack of 1080p games on Switch when docked.
900p/60 with nice image quality is a compromise I would accept.

720p device releasing in 2017? You're kidding me, right?

Even if that is serviceable, people know what resolutions are these days and that won't be seen as a good thing in the eyes of the masses.

720p games at native res looks better than 900p at a 1080p screen. Even the PS4 struggles with 1080p on a lot of games. For a gaming console its a waste having a higher res screen than what the internals can handle running games natively as.

It's less precise but I think a gyro aiming option is preferable to IR. Now there are questions of if using the standard pad or the joycon grip allows complete functionality with games. Steam controller, DS4, and Wii U gamepad using gyro pointing is way better than Motion Plus used to be.

That's over double the resolution of 720p. Don't expect much in the stand. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment.

We don't know that. There's no reason to expect secret sauce in the stand. Sure, an overclock is likely when not on battery power (since the fan will now be able to run or run at console speeds) but there's no reason to go KINECT SECOND GPU SECRET SAUCE right now.

I am assuring you that it is capable of native 1080p resolutions when docked. If devs hit it with their games that's on them. But I promise you that it is capable. I do know that.

Perfect. Anybody who wants a 1080p screen doesn't have realistic expectations or a grasp of what graphics tech is capable of today vs battery.

It don't need anything special in the dock to make 1080p games.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's possible there could be a major overclock and I'm sure that's the only thing the stand would do is provide power and a safe spot for ventilation. Nothing in the dock...but some people are expecting secret sauce in the dock I'm sure...

Don't expect Xbox One-level capabilities from this thing without evidence, Xbox One being a system that already had problems with 1080p on more visually complex titles.

Even the OG PS4 which is a little beefier than the Xbox One doesn't have 1080p for every game..

You're putting yourself up for disappointment

IR though is gonna gimp any multi-touch capability of the portable. You can only interact with one point using an IR pointer. I fear we may see some fencing of "portable only" and "dock only" apps/functionality.

People need to stop getting so hung up on resolution. They have to save battery, they can't make it have huge resolutions and crank out console tier graphics without destroying the battery in an hour. As long as the games look good on the handheld and they get upscaled And look fine on the TV why should we care about res.

gameplay,performance,battery >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> visuals

The PS4 has trouble hitting 1080p.

At 60 FPS it does but it doesn't seem to have much trouble hitting that with the majority of its games outside of huge MP ones or open worlds (neither genre will hit Switch anyway outside of Zelda which I don't think is 60FPS...)

I mean, come on.

Not bad not bad.

Yeah, I remember Game Freak saying in Pokemon X/Y era that they've designed 3D models to be easily reused in future projects, and they did make an overkill with them. Maybe that's why X/Y lagged in battles so much with 3D turned on.

What was the second screen used for?

As far as game mechanics go, it was used to jump and use air assault weapons anywhere on the map.

I didn't say match the PS4, just near it, at least higher than the WiiU

Go look at the Switch threads where people talk about hardware. It's pretty much agreed that we're looking at something like 500GFlops minimum which is 2.8 Wii U GFlops (Yes yes I know it's not 1:1)

Ok, I'm thinking like you.

eh what has eurogamer ever got right

this all sounds expected. expecting more meltdowns when it's confirmed that the dock doesn't spit the game out at 1080p on the tv.

Some people think Smash Bros for Wii U which was 1080p will be 720p on the Switch when docked

Visually a somewhat simplistic title, and additionally being a 3D fighter it doesn't constantly have the kind of rendering demands that say an open-world title has. Still impressive that the Wii U hit 1080p on it though, certainly a beautiful game.

We're talking visually complex games.

I think it's more likely that Nintendo won't allow anything which only works with multi-touch.

Some games not being capable of fully "switch"ing would damage their messaging.

Some 3rd party games do the 900p/60fps thing but this is the outlier.

I really can't believe that we are arguing over whether or not a brand new console released NEXT year is 1080p capable. Only Nintendo...

Some people are arguing. I'm telling you people over and over that it is capable. Trust me.

That sounds good. I mean, really good. At 6,2' with native 720p and ppi slightly above the Vita screen, this should look nice. Nintendos art design in HD on that portable, just imagine! Hopefully, the screens overall quality is good as well.
The IR sensor may come in handy too. Things sound reasonable so far.

And now I'm outta here, because the next "lawl seventwenty in 2017" posting is going to make me throw up food from the last three days.

Yeah, that was Laura's rumor- that the Switch will have increased performance when docked. People in this thread are being willfully ignorant it seems.

I know about that rumour, and I'm ignoring claims the dock has secret sauce without evidence.

She could very well be right because of an overclock when docked, which is what I figure and I suspect it's quite true.

But there's no need for another "THERE'S A SECOND GPU IN THE KINECT GUYS" situation.... We've seen this kind of bullshit before.

720p in 2017 is not a good look, but I can accept it when using the switch without the dock. 720p is not going to look great on my TV, though, and they're marketing this thing as a home console first, at least in the west. Hopefully the rumor about the dock increasing performance is true.

Nintendo fans don'r care about gfx, you know... even if it's 2017! =p

Just look at the 3ds...
