Steam Halloween Sale 2016: My Underlooked Horror Games Can't Possibly Be This Cheap

Anyone have any recommendations of horror games that aren't AS scary? For example I beat vampire: the masquerade and Zombi on this list, so things about that level...I just don't want to buy some and then not play them because they're too freaky but I enjoy a bit of horror.

Also, might be worth mentioning in op that corpse party just had a 3DS version come out.

So I'm still in the window shopping phase and have a question...

Resident Evil 6, which I don't own is $7.49.

But a bundle with 4,5,&6 is $6.44! Considering I already own 4&5 would I gain them as giftable items?

The Survey - $3.99 (20% off)
Steam

You awaken in your house, and find a strange survey app installed on your phone. They ask questions of you, and suddenly you begin to suspect you aren't alone in your home. A P.T.-inspired game that holds its own pretty well.

Thanks for this recommendation, played it last night. Inspired by PT is right, I don't think I've been unnerved and filled with dread for the duration like that since PT.

no, the reason its cheap is because you own 4 and 5 and 6 is being discounted with the bundle price (10% or something). You wouldnt get 4 and 5, only 6

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

If we're talking mindfucks as a prerequisite, wow, TSC should shoot to the top of some lists. Parade(Case 3) is some serious fridge horror.

What's the single scariest game on this list (out of the ones I don't have)? I'll buy it right now.

From the games in the OP, I have:
Distraint
Kholat
Night Blights
Pony Island
SOMA

The Silver Case, it is a cult classic game by Suda51 and team which was finally released translated in a faithful remake to Steam earlier this month.

This said, it's not on sale nor part of the Steam Halloween Sale, but it is worth getting and I do want to see it succeed to (Cj does obviously as well).

Every copy it sells is one step closer to seeing 25 Wards and FSR hitting Steam as well, so absolutely. It also sends a clear message that more obscure unlocalized games have an audience on Steam.

Huh, Konami released a Silent Hill game on Steam at some point. It's freaking Homecoming of all things. You just love to rub salt in the wound, doncha, Konami?

I'll definitely be looking into this.

Oh god I am starting to explore the school in DreadOut and it like nope already!XD There is there one
female ghost on the second floor as you are going across from one end of the building to the other that can't seem to be defeated?
This is definitely looking to be a nice Fatal Frame sub on PC.

Homecoming was released on Steam alongside the PS360 releases, there's nothing too bizarre about it.

Has it always been there? I've never seen it on the store before and I'm sure I would have searched for Silent Hill at least once before.

I agree, and why I bought it as soon as it released to support (though I have yet to play it quite yet, but I plan to). This said, I had written up a lot of write-ups for games before the Steam Sale went live so I could just modify them up some, and had to delete several of my write-ups due to the games not going on sale during Steam, and The Silver Case was one of them.

It's all good, as long as you don't mind me recommending it like I work for the company, haha. (I swear I don't)

I'd like to see that list!

Umeniko, Higarashi, Fata Morgana?(probably misspelled those)

If you could only get one?
Higurashi.

Since there was someone vouching for each of the other two I had to make your choice harder :p
But seriously, even though I love Umineko I think Higurashi is more satisfying overall, and has slightly better pacing.

Sadly, Ryukishi07 lost his writing partner haflway through Umineko, which really changes things. I love the VN, but it's clear things changed drastically.

Higurashi is supposedly more consistent(though I've only done one episode so far).

By the way, Dusk Golem, that OP is amazing.

Lots of games I had never heard of that sound interesting. Bought Rusty Lake Hotel, Bad End and Malus Code.

I wanna buy Vampire Masquerade after hearing so many good things about it (a lot of comparisons with Deus Ex gameplay/Fallout NV writing?), but I don't want to support Activision for selling a basically broken game that NEEDS an unofficial patch to sort most of its troubles.
Do not hesitate, the game is worth it.

Happy you're enjoying DreadOut, I and a few other GAF'ers (one in this topic) do go vocally praise the game quite a bit despite its jankiness, for good reason. Good luck with the school, it's one of the more cryptic areas in the game but I liked it quite a bit. This said, the best DreadOut has to offer is still yet to come.

Well once I
beat this freaking piece of shit ghost that has scissors,
I shall look forward to what comes around later, hopefully.:p

Edit: There lol.

(Some Act I spoilers for DreadOut!!) Finally
got outta the hallway
in DreadOut and just gotta say I really like the game's limbo concept (after
getting 'limbo'-ed by the red-dressed woman in particular a couple seconds ago and being actually given tips by some non-corporeal voice...wasn't expecting that!
). It's mysterious and adds to the ambiguity of what you're dealing with exactly.

That being said...that puzzle with the
hanged bodies
was frustrating to figure out, after a couple on-and-off hours I looked it up despite not wanting to touch any guides...it's sort of prepared me for further puzzles down the line if they're similarly photo-reliant though. It's just important to remember how integral the camera is, even if I feel a love/hate relationship coming on. Then again the school having many many rooms and Linda's leisurely pace was mainly why I had trouble, I didn't want to take too long in one spot because I couldn't tell where I had to be so I just stormed through each room lol.

Overall, I like most of what I see so far. This kind of B-movie style, Asian non-zombie horror vibe is great and very interesting. Also, cleverly done scares that are not just pop-ups, which is surprisingly subdued for an out-of-the-blue debut!

EDIT: Going through the
boss fight with the woman
and damn this game really does get, like...just pretty cool sometimes. If there was a word I'd use to describe DO atm it would be that. :p

EDIT #2: LMAO just
made it out of the school door and that ending and music was so unexpected
but awesome (aaand trippy). Forget what I said about 'b-movie' vibes, this is somethin' else: a thing of its own, at least for now.

EDIT #3: Oh man the framerate just got shot in the chest though, ouch. So this is true horror!! >_<

EDIT #4: Looks like it might just be computer lag though. Time and a few configurations will tell.

Pathologic is 65% off.

It might not be for everyone, it is slow-paced, janky, surreal and sometimes obtuse. But even with all its flaws, I believe it deserves to be given a chance, if only because of the creepy and oppressive atmosphere that the game creates through its story and gameplay .

Got The Last Door after seeing it in this thread. The first episode is very good. Don't know if I'll get a chance to finish it before Halloween though because I'm currently playing SOMA and that's been getting more and more interesting.

So how is Stasis?
I'm a fan of point & click adventures, usually lighter, but I did enjoy Sanitarium quite a bit and this game reminds of it.
The thing is that I don't like being on the edge of my sit the whole time with adventure games, I like to take my time and enjoy the puzzles.
Are there may jump scares or timed sequences?

That was something, and the animation made it even more silly.:p

Also after an
annoying fight with the scissor phantom,
the rest of Act 1 was pretty good with
the endless hallway and the encounter with the lady in red.

Looking forward of what spooks will come in Act 2, which I already dip into a little.

The atmosphere is there, but I honestly got pretty bored with it like an hour or two in and never went back.

Yes I enjoyed the
lady-in-red "fight"
a lot, and despite some unsteady moments I thought it was a really decent segment overall, like one big jigsaw puzzle.

Lookin' forward to the rest of Act 2 as well if that was the end of I..! Hope to get to see Linda kick some more spiritual ass...or just take pictures of them.
