Steam Halloween Sale 2016: My Underlooked Horror Games Can't Possibly Be This Cheap

Most certainly. If you are somewhat new to horror, here's a few recommendations I can give that are lighter on the scares (just scanning down my front page list, so in no order than that):

-Count Lucanor: It has some tense moments, but lacks jump scares and settles much more for mood.

-Fran Bow: If you don't mind a point'n'click, this game I wouldn't define as scary but immensely interesting.

-INSIDE: It is a master of mood, but I wouldn't say it's that scary, can be tense though.

-Lakeview Cabin Collection: Not scary, but can be very fun and thrilling.

-LISA: It's twisted, but it's not scary. Actually pretty funny in places, dark in others.

-Oxenfree: Very interesting and atmospheric, but not scary.

-Pony Island: It's got meta-horror, but it doesn't really aim to be scary.

-Sylvio: A very interesting slow-burn horror that lacks startling the player. Not for everyone, but it is very unique and focuses something more on 'fridge horror'.

There's others, but from the top list off the top.

Awesome, thanks for the list! I will check these out.

I remember that one I played DreadOut I didn't know what to do to beat the
pig
, but I didn't want to look at a walkthrough either. This game gets so much love here that I probably need to give it another try.

Can anyone recommend a good story based game that is scary but doesn't rely on jump scares.

I'm after something ghost related that's on sale now.

I absolutely adored Tormentum Dark Sorrow

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Heads up guys, stay away from The Survey. Got about halfway, door failed to activate after puzzle, reloaded. Complete puzzle, get about 20 minutes further, hard crash to desktop. Reload, it started me right before the original puzzle where the door had failed to activate, complete puzzle and another hard crash. Save wiped. I asked for a refund. All of this in about an hour of play. Avoid.

there is nothing in the entirety of video games that turns me off faster than constantly running away from invincible enemies

Me too.. However, it is actually possible to turn off (make you invincible towards those, and only those) the very few encounters in Soma that has invincible enemies. That's what I did and ended up with a great experience. I highly recommend Soma.

I played it with no issues and quite enjoyed it, given I have seen they've been patching the game a few times since they've released it.

Nope, first time it's been this cheap on Steam.

I may as well pick it up. I have been itching to replay the remake for a while now.

Hope you guys are having a wonderful halloween! I be watching a movie later, but in the meantime I started playing DreadOut Keepers of the Dark, which having gone through a few of the realms, I think I going to really like the set up this spinoff has.

This one spirit through
the one that like comes out and KOs you with a katana, holy shit mother- I almost fell off my chair once. XD I checked out another realm and eventually went back to room 102 and finally got him. I learned he was in 103 too, so went to get rid of him there which he was really easy to get where I saw him.

Anyway, again I am glad to had finally checked out DreadOut. A very nice horror game to end the month.

Jesus Christ, I just learned you can buy all 5 of the "Blackwell" games for under $6.

If you have any passing interest in Point and Click adventure games, at all, GET THESE GAMES.

The first 4 are available here:
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/13237/

and the last one is here:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/236930/

Some of the best Point and Clicks out of the last decade. Really fantastic writing, great puzzle design, great art, and it's by Wadjet Eye, the guys behind (publishing) Gemini Rue, Primodia, Technobabylon, and others.

You play as paranormal detectives. That is, a human and a ghost, trying to figure out how other ghosts died, so you can convince them to move on. There's a push of focus away from standard adventure game puzzles of inventory items and obscure solutions, and more towards journalism, using an inventory of information in order to piece together the bigger parts of the puzzle.

Got the Halloween Acheev for SUPERFIGHT.

Meant to get all the acheevs to Costume Quest 2 and the Halloween acheevs for my own game because nepotism.

Ah, next year.

Yeah. I would play the shit out of this. For some reason, though, I've never picked it up.

Been getting really into VNs of late, what is so good about Fara Morgan's? I'm seeing it mentioned a lot!
Writing is great for most of the part even if the pacing halfway on the game may slow down . The characters are well fleshed out with some depth that doesnt make them black or white or good or evil, interesting subjects and gruesome events that may not visually be presented but described pretty well so you can imagine those. The art is pretty different from all the anime VNs and also the ending is pretty damn satisfying.

Also the OST is GOAT

A recommendation to all SteamGAF for this hugely discounted and greatly enjoyable game:

Uncanny Valley 90% Off

You won't be disappointed.

Anyone with Windows 10 own RE4 HD, I was gonna buy it but the crash reports I'm hearing are worrying.

Worst case, running in Windows XP or Windows 7 compatibility mode usually fixes OS specific crashes.

I bought Costume Quest during the sale and it kept crashing under Windows 10. Changed to XP and all is well.

RE4 is only available with missing extra modes in my country. What would be the easiest way to get the international version? Does gifting work in this case?

Not sure about GAF's policy on linking to grey markets but you might want to check G2A. They have several international versions.
