PlayStation 4 Pro Reviews

That was a lightning-speed ban, good grief. Mods getting that Pro upgrade.

Edit:
Whoops, sorry for the terrible top of page post y'all

Seems to be a benefit for the visual upgrade but I really only cared about better frame rates/stability. Will probably hold off until pro starts improving frame rates on more games.

Why are there no comparion videos and screenshots in this thread?

Yeah, right? Super bummed that there weren't any comparison videos out immediately. I was really hoping DF would do at least one and thought that Titanfall 2 would be the best to start with. Bu then again, I'm not the one making these comparisons so it could take longer than we all could expect. At least they're not rushing half-baked stuff out :)

beyond dissing cnet, does anyone really disagree with the verdict?
"If you don't have a PS4, buy the pro, if you have a PS4, you don't need a pro right now because the upgrade isn't worth 400$, right now"
Sounds reasonable to me.

My only disagreement is if you have a PS4, and want to upgrade to a Pro, then out of pocket it's not a $400 upgrade if you sell your old PS4 or trade it in. It's more like a $200-250 upgrade. I personally think that's reasonable for what you're getting.

Not really, People claimed consoles are going the way of the mobile phone, reviews should reflect that.

This is a much larger upgrade than any iphone has ever mustered yet the review is not written the same way.

wait, what?
how is it a much larger upgrade?

There was no functionality added - it's literally just CPU and mainly GPU power. This is literally a smaller upgrade than any iPhone upgrade, imho :p

I don't know why you're so gung ho about "yeah, i'm with DF on this"... Every single review is a puzzle piece to the complete picture. I don't see why you're so vocal about being wilfully ignorant of reviews that don't agree with your preconceived idea of what the PS4 pro would turn out to be.

i think it's right there in the middle. it all depends on how much you care about graphics, how much you notice higher resolutions, what your overall setup is (do you already own a 4k TV, do you own PSVR?), etc. pp. It's not a no-brainer as (i'd expect?) going from Xbox One -> Scorpio.
If i didn't own a PSVR and a 4k TV, i'd probably not early adopt the pro, and maybe jump in when they release a fancy (white!) bundle

Pretty much this will be the case. This is pretty much the case ever since it's announcement...not sure any reviews or opinions would change that

So what's the general consensus? Should I even bother picking it up if I only have a 1080p display but still want slightly better visuals?

I honestly don't know what the expectations were. This was never presented as a generational leap, but an incremental one if you have a 4K TV. I game on a 1080P panel, but feel the upgrades I'll see on some games was worth the upgrade. You will have to decide if it's worth the price, but both Sony and MS have made it clear, the base model is the focus. Why are people so suddenly surprised?

Not comparable? The S is a very minor upgrade over the OG but at least it allowed better frame rates in underperforming titles with the spec bump. Sony is locking out that potential unless a dev patches their game. As an example: In Destiny's latest expansion the frame rate can drop to single digit numbers in the raid and having that extra power completely unavailable is a disappointment to any fan of the game. I'm not saying implementing that extra power would be super easy for the Pro but the lack of it is disappointing as a gamer. I'm super excited about the potential of the pro and games like RotTR look absolutely amazing, just wish more devs were going back to patch their games or Sony would allow a small spec bump to un-patched games.

Yup, again with this. The PS4 Pro is the first incremental upgrade I've seen that locks down un-patched games to IDENTICAL performance for the sake of compatibility, is it wrong as a consumer to be disappointed in this? Maybe I'm just expecting too much from Sony, the engineering on the PS4 Pro is a feat and I'm looking forward to mine arriving Thursday but I STILL wish they'd give a percentage of the new power to older games.

Dude you realize the base PS4 performance is STILL better than the Xbox One S, right? The Xbox One S was so minor not only a handful of games perform better, not all, and they still are lagging behind their PS4 counterpart(Project Cars for example).

--

Also why are people still talking about the Xbox One s minor bump which literally makes it on par with the OG PS4? 💀

One or two games come out with small performance boosts over one or two ps4 games and people are running away with it. There are still games that run the same on PS4 without the need of a boost that the Xbox One S is now on parity with... Really tho?

It's still not on par with the OG PS4. The OG PS4 still has higher resolution/framerate in graphically intensive games(Battlefield/Project Cars for example). Seriously, where are people getting this?

CNet, the website that gave the iphone 7 the same review score as the iphone 6?

Removing features, same screen, minor differences in hardware..........

Websites don't give scores, people do.

I know reading is hard, but why even bother pay any attention to reviews if you aren't going to read them?

So basically, unless you're running out of space in Uncle Scrooge's money bin --

Wait for six months when more games will support it, instead of the quick slapdash patches being made now. And by then there might be a holy grail of a budget 4K HDR tv to go with it.

I mean... Let's be real...the 5 to the 5s wasn't that big of an upgrade. Most of those differences are felt in software rather than hardware lol

But why are yall so tight that some people are choosing the review that's more in depth and in lines with what they want to hear rather than a typical consumer level review that doesn't say much... Aren't yall also being unreasonable in your approach as well?

Im chuckling at the lack of perspective here. Here you are saying that it's some confirmation bias but it seems that also seem to apply to you as well? Aren't you seeing what you want to see as well. Maybe you didn't want the PS4 PRO on the first place so that review matches in line with what you wanted in your take on the review?

Isn't that how it all works? There's no higher ground here, these are all opinions 💀

Actually, I agree with the larger upgrade thing.

I don't have 'the list' ready, but much faster wifi, better Remote Play/Youtube streaming, better controller, 2x GPU, 4K streaming, new design, added USB port, SATA III, etc....

That's pretty damn big for a $200 upgrade.

Many yearly iterations of gadgets don't even come near this level of improvement, but reviewers seem to have a 90's mindset re: consoles.

Seems like every review site rushed out reviews just to make the deadline for clicks. No one seems to really have set down and and actually run it through its course. Just a bunch of midnight release 12:15 impression reviews.

Digital foundry for Uncharted if you only had time to count the pixels but can't tell if anything else has been approved just hold off there are others days in the week to get clicks. Why is 1440p worth it on pc for a 450 dollar 1070. But a disappointment on ps4pro?

Which is a bit weird as they have had this thing for a good 4-5 days.

Aren't reviews on this subjective on the televisions the pro is being reviewed on?

I mean on some shifty 4k hdr Tvs it may not have noticeable changes but on higher end displays it may be jaw dropping.

This is a weird product where it's not just the console but the display that it's hooked up to that will impact your experience.

HDR is on both major consoles that are already out. Why would you upgrade for something you already have?

Read carefully: I didn't say it would be a major upgrade reason not a differentiator between PS4 and a Pro, I'm stating that the reviewers didn't notice HDR vs non-HDR picture quality which seems weird to me.

Second, since you asked, I have 4k tv and a PSVR, why wouldn't I want the best picture quality out of both if I have enough disposable income?

I mean but it's not. It's for new consumers who never had a Playstation because $100 for the upgrade moving forward is better than buying the older model. But it's also for enthusiasts.

Saying that it's for one type of person is so off the mark. It's like recommending someone a 2013 TV when the 2016 is better in a lot of aspects for a $100 bucks more.

It is an enthusiast upgrade if you already have a PS4.

You are answering your own question?

I expect to see a greater benefit to 1080p visually than 4k by way of bells and whistles.

Also: PSVR, if that's your thing.

Reviews are amazing. Would the Pro be on Metacritic we would have now a 90+ score! Great job everyone

Can't wait to get my hands on that beast!

Wow, the technical section in that cnet review is a joke. Wish Bakalar put more effort into explaining checkerboard rendering instead of dismissing it as "regular ol-upscaling", but I guess he's reviewing it from the view of an average consumer.

I guess it falls down to priorities and what type of enthusiast you are. The press treats the release of a new iPhone like it's radically different than what came before. You've got people scrambling to find an iPhone 7 in stock when they already have a iPhone 6s and not batting an eye to spend $700+ each year or every other year for the privilege. However when it comes to gaming, there's a new upgraded console that gives you more performance that you can appreciably see, at a reasonable price? Meh. Not interested. That's some double standard.

Yup which is why even though I own an Xbox One I do 95% of my console gaming on my PS4 and I have a PS4 Pro pre-ordered. I fully understand the differences and still would love to see Sony take advantage of their hardware specs more than they are with the Pro. Very much looking forward to all the advantages the Pro will bring to future games.

That's up to you and how much you notice these slight improvements.
Less jaggies, less shimmering, sharper, cleaner, and possibly more enhancements depending on the dev. All i can say is that it's worth it for me. But i want to kill jaggies for a living.

have you tried using Second Light to test the peak fan noise? thanks for your review.

I haven't yet, but I'm not sure how different it would be to ROTTR given that there don't seem to be any 1080p updates for First Light

Great video! Would have appreciated more direct, standstill comparisons, but nonetheless I thought you guys did a good job!

Thanks dude! I wanted to do so much more in the video but time was a problem. Hoping to do a few more of the comparisons through the week if I can get a spare few minutes!

Weird that most of these reviews didn't list the TV they were testing on. Seems like it would have been highly revelant to include that information.

Have any reviewers mentioned decibel ratings or perhaps shared their thoughts on how loud the system is? I know it sounds silly but this is what determines if I skip the pro for a slim.

I play my games on a monitor, so the console is going to be right beside me...

If I didnt have a PS4 but was going to get one, I would pay the 100 extra for a pro.
Since I have a PS4 I traded in my old and the cost is 200 bucks. ( warranty plays a role too )

I haven't really been following it so pardon my ignorance, but games taking advantage of the Pro specs can result in better visuals regardless of whether or not I have a 4K TV?

Yes and it's pretty big on reducing jaggies even if it's the bare minimum and the devs didn't put any effort into it. Devs who do will result in games with lots of new graphical effects!

Because this console is a different value proposition from other consoles.

Critics are looking at this as something that was supposed to deliver a new generation type of upgrade to give it clear sense of distinction from the PS4.

When instead, it is more like a PS Slim type of mid generational refresh that just happens to be geared towards making games run and look better in different ways.

That sounds worth it to me then. Guess I'll be buying a Pro within the year then.

I'm really curious at how NBA 2k looks on the Pro. They said that the patch will bring the game up to native 4k with 60 fps and HDR so I feel like it'll look incredible

One site mentions the pitch being noticeable at times from across the room......another site calls it the quietest PlayStation system to date after running it for several hours. lol so the answer is.....no one knows.

No decibel ratings or anything like that i have seen as of yet.
