Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

I couldn't get the screw off originally when trying to switch the stock HDD for my old 1TB SSHD I had used with PS4, but have since been able to loosen the screw. Question is, should I go through with the hard drive swap?

If there is no difference between PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in terms of faster loading with a SSD, I just don't understand what is causing the bottleneck, because i thought it was a SATA II thing. SATA III is almost identical here.

If there's no difference, I will end up buying a Slim.

If you just wanted a Pro for loading times, you missed the whole point of Pro and why it actually costs more

The Japanese website posted earlier in this page shows there is a difference for pro patched games.

I wanted a Pro for different things, amongst them, faster loading times. It's not crazy to think it would do that upgrading from SATA II to SATA III.

I also wanted a Pro because I thought it was going to be more oriented to 60fps more than "bells and whistles mode", but they are approaching more the latter, unfortunately.

So, I think I will buy a PS4 Slim on christmas and call it a day. I will wait to see if they have news about Pro support on The Last Guardian or Bloodborne (lol), but aside of that, I will go Slim.

Yeah, and Bloodborne marks a 1 second difference between them. SATA III isn't just meaning anything then.

I think it is faster it's just that because Pro loading is already faster the improvements aren't as pronounced.

I've done two HDD swaps.

The first one to remove the original 1tb drive from the pro and insert my 2tb hdd.

Then I bought an SSD and I found out that I broke one of the screws, I couldn't unscrew it because the head was "broken" in the sense that the screwdriver would not turn the screw even if I turned the screw driver. I know theres a word for that, but yeah, don't know which it is. EDIT: I Stripped the screw!

I had to use pliers to unscrew that screw, then I put the SSD in, 1tb. I fear the day I have to change my hard drive again.

I hope that never lol.

If I buy a a brand new evo 850 ssd is there anything I need to do before installing it into the ps4 pro? Or is it good to go straight out of the box? Thanks!

I've had no issues with a 750GB crucial SSD and wouldn't expect 500GB drives to have any problems. Went from a 2TB 5400 drives on the launch PS4 and the load times are night and day.
Yeah, I've got an 850 EVO 500GB in my launch PS4, just going to get a feel for the Pro with the stock 1TB HDD before swapping it in.

2TB 850 Pro arriving today!

Guess I will see how the Witcher 3 load times are impacted.
Any reason you went with an 850 Pro? Could've saved a good chunk of change with an 850 Evo or even more with a Crucial MX300.

Just pop it in, the PS4 will take care of any formatting it needs to do. You just need a USB stick with the system firmware file ready.

Personally I am keeping an eye on Amazon UK. They had a good price this time last year on a 1TB, and hopefully they match / surpass it this year...

I'd go for the MX300 too, but really want the sub-£200 price. Preferably sub £180. I have Amazon credit waiting, and not much else I want to buy with it right now.

They weren't for me.

SATA2 wasn't bottlenecking the PS4 in any way.
It was the way it was implemented in the console.
The PS4 was far from achieving max SATA2 speeds.

Even in a PC with a 6700k I couldn't perceive any tangible difference loading games between a SATA2 and a SATA 3 SSD.
So in a PS4/Pro...

Thanks. it seems for these games the Toshiba SSHD is much better than the Seagate.
Yeah it does although I find it hard to read the table? Are they doing 3 runs for every game? Some games starts off a lot better for Firecuda.

Is the better speed from Toshiba from higher platter density for 1tb or something?

If you are going that direction you could save yourself £30 and go with this...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/External...Plus-Slim-Portable-External-Drive/B00G7LQA1E/

You simply have to take the external casing off to free the HDD from within, but it is a very easy process. If you are careful, you also can re house your old PS4 HDD into the casing and have a spare external hardware to use however you wish.

Honestly, no reason at all other than was gifting myself and this has been a great year for me.

A Pro for my Pro?

Needed that on paper +10MB/s?

More endurance?

I don't have any knowledge of this stuff.

Can I increase my load times on pro and how much will it run me?

Thanks.

You can decrease load times on the Pro by buying a SSD. Doing so will only affect some games, as not all games are created equal. It is noticeably having a good effect on many games, but it should not be expected to be a fix for good load times across the board.

SSD are still expensive when you compare price to GB. However, 750GB seem like the sweet spot for decent size vs okay price. There are 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB SSDs available, but the price skyrockets for every step up that ladder you make.

I have no idea what country you are from, so I cannot do price comparisons, but type "Crucial mx300" into Amazon, and start looking at the prices compared to the GB/TBs for an idea of what to expect.

Thank you for the tip, I think I'll give that one a shot.

I have just opened up the case on this one from Amazon UK

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TKFEE5S/

inside was a Seagate Mobile 2 TB Internal HDD - 2.5" - ST2000LM007. quieter also than previous models, which is actually 7mm in height, as apposed to the normal 9mm seagate found in backup plus drives. it is the latest revision HDD with 128MB cache also. works perfect in the pro. is also cheaper at £57.99

That's interesting, thanks for posting this. Looking at the spec sheets it essentially seems to be the same mechanical drive as the Firecuda minus the flash.

Half the price of the Firecuda and in stock now too.... mmm not sure what to go for now.

I'm so tempted by this now too.

Is there going to be much of a difference in speed to the SSHD? Is this pretty foolproof to do, too?

God those screws are tough

I started off with those tinier computer screwdrivers. None of them worked for me as the handles are so slender, I get no torque.

Then I went with an oversized and more normal phillips with a bigger handle and the screws turned with ease. After that, only other thing I ran into was downloading the smaller update file for the OS, rather than the entire OS. I blame the design of Sony's webpage for that though. So many have made that mistake.

What a colossal difference, holy shit. 60 seconds with a HDD, 17 with an SSD. So glad I put one in my Pro.

Yeah, if you can afford SSD then why not? I have a Pro to get the best possible experience if cutting load times down can be done at what I consider affordable then I'm in.

Thanks so much. I would need a minimum of the 1 to the machine already has.

I'll look it up but sounds like I might have to wait for price drop.

Yes they're easy to open, the caddy on the previous model was just glued together so you just need to carefully pry the top off and insert the drive into the PS4.

In the case of the performance if you go back over the past couple of pages there are benchmarks showing SSHDs do perform better but I'm not sure they are 2x the cost better as would be the case here?

Cheers, ordered it and realised it's the exact same model I have plugged in to my Xbox One S. Need to find outif I can back that up, open it then put the Xbox stuff back on the new drive when that comes?
