NES Classic Edition Thread: Now You're Playing With Power* *Sold Separately in Europe

Well I figured out the issue. It wasn't USB at all.
It was HDMI.

For some reason the front HDMI port doesn't seem to work with the Famicom mini.
I tried one of the free back ports and it worked fine.

It's odd because I use other devices on the front HDMI port with no issues. I even tried switching cables.

So the power light doesn't turn on without hdmi input?

I just got my NES Classic and have a question. Can you change the screen options without the game you're in resetting?

What screen option are you all using?
Reset doesn't actually reset, it suspends the game. Hit reset, go to display options, change filter, then press start on the game to return

And yes, "home" acts as reset

The family united!

Man... especially after this Classic Edition bologna, I really want to buy a retroUSB AVS now. It'll have to wait until after Christmas though. Gotta spend monies on other people for now.

So...what is the native output resolution? I'm assuming 1080p, so no scaling will happen on most modern monitors and TVs-especially the pixel perfect mode. Anybody know the answer to this?

Sorry If this has already been covered-I couldn't find any definitive answer.

720p

I'm loving mine so far. As someone's already said, I've had a lot of these available through VC for ages but the incredibly accurate emulation and authentic controller actually makes me want to play them. Currently about three stages into Mega Man 2.

Oh, and the way you overwrite old suspend points is so damn Nintendo. The UI on this is really great.

Hey guys is anyone well educated on input lag? I remember my main gripe moving from SD TV to HDTVs was the input lag on HDTVs suck. 1 millisecond can make a big difference in platformers like Mario, and Kirby. Is there any HDTV out there that has almost no input lag just like an old tube SDTV?

We beat Mario in pixel perfect mode and the lag on our Samsung HDTV felt nonexistent. I'm curious what the lag is on our TV since it feels generally nonexistent. Maybe I'm just not acutely enough aware though and it's in reality really bad? The model is Samsung LN26D450 26-Inch 720p 60Hz LCD HDTV (Black) in case anyone can tell me....

That's not true. A frame or two can start to make a difference on stuff like Mega Man. 1 millisecond is nothing. A millisecond is literally 6% of one frame.

Lag on some TV's can be a few frames behind though. I even tested this on the Kirby mini-game of quick draw

latest

On this game for instance I was averaging a 10 on SD, and a 13 on HD TV

I couldnt tell you the exact stats on whatever the nes mini runs at, but i can say that the first thing i attempted was to beat Mr. Dream as my test for the system and did it easily. Every attempt i made through the Wii and Wii U versions and also PC emulator versions i couldnt get past the first part due to the lag. So right now iam very impressed with the input lag and picture provided by this thing.

Uh. There are no flashes in Contra that are worse than any other NES games. And if you've been following the VC scene even slightly, you'd know that the patching of games wasn't done with the original source code (lol), even for Zelda II. They didn't recompile the games. The original unaltered ROM file is present, and there is a second separate file that contains changes to be patched in memory to fix bugs, remove flashes, etc.

The MSX version doesn't have the problematic Schwarzenegger art. Contra in Contra 4 was Konami's own doing. Nintendo probably doesn't want to risk dealing with it on its own services, especially since they show the boxart which is even more troublesome. Contra 4 didn't show the box art.
1) Thanks for the condescending tone. I posted it as a hypothesis, perhaps Konami didn't want to bother patching the ROM to remove any potential flashes to meet any new epilepsy requirements.

2) Actually, no, the MSX has the exact same Schwarzenegger art on the back of the box

3) Wrong, Contra 4 does show the box art, in the Contra history section.

They would have released it on the various VCs by that point if that's what they truly wanted. Besides Probotector is a 50hz rom. They're not going to release it in the US.
No, Probotector has no speed changes from US Contra. It plays identically to US Contra on an NTSC system.

I'm having problems with HDMI on it too. My receiver is obviously getting some kind of signal because the Denon logo that's on screen when it's not displaying anything disappears, but nothing ever happens. Tried multiple cables and all the ports. The receiver's never had a problem with set-top boxes, modern consoles, Macs, PCs, even a Raspberry Pi.

It works fine plugged directly into the TV, which is a pain.

Edit: Just looked on AVS and it seems we're not the only ones.

Got mine today (Aust).

The whole package is pretty neat, after having played SMB on the AVS a lot recently, I definitely noticed the slight audio lag in the emulation.

Oh wow, glad I'm not going nuts.

That explains why the TV wasn't showing the "no signal detected" half the time.
It was there for a bit, would disappear, then come back. Hadn't noticed that behavior before.

Wow, so I don't have an NES Classic and in an attempt to squash feelings of wanting one, I decided to grab Mario Bros. 3 on my n3DS to get a retro fix. Holy crap the emulation is TERRIBLE. I'm.... kinda pissed I spent $5 on this. Can't believe that's an officially released product.

Is the emulation on the NES Classic pretty legit?

Blurry image, weird pixelation problems occurring on the right side of frame constantly. Just feels really janky and amateur.
The 'pixelation problems' are there on the original NES version, it's just that your old TV cut them off.

And the blurriness is very light, and unavoidable because the NES used rectangular pixels, the resolution doesn't map to the 3DS resolution perfectly with an emulation of rectangular pixels, and the games would be vertically squashed if shown in pixel perfect mode.

3DS VC NES emulation is basically flawless apart from that minor scaling issue.

3DS VC is much better than the Wii U (and so is the Wii for that matter).

It's not blurry at all, and those glitches are clearly in the original game. It's good emulation.

EDIT: I forgot you can't enable pixel-perfect mode on NES. Yeah, it's not scaling accurately, but those glitches are also found with the cart itself.

God damn it, just got a cancellation for my order with Dell. Got my extra controller in from Amazon though!

Yep. They canceled mine. And followed up with a "As requested" cancelation message. As if I requested it. Stupid. I got my controller from Walmart though. I'm sure I'll get one eventually. I work at Walmart so my managers will let me know.

Super Mario 3 always had the garbage on the lower right. These are artifacts from the techniques they were using to push the most possible from the system. I get it on my real NES and Famicom.

It wasn't very noticeable back in the day because of typical CRT overscan.

Any proper emulation will show these artifacts.

Can anyone explain why there is lag?

It's just the nature of the technology; there's a lot of processing overhead going on in our current lcd and led televisions that wasn't there in old analog CRTs.
The lag is my only issue with the Classic. I still play my original NES (toaster and top-loader) regularly on a CRT. The ultra-responsiveness of NES controls is still a major selling point to me.

I tried my Classic on an older Samsung and it worked better than it did on my Vizio. I still recommend folks to pick up the Classic when its available again but I'm still trying to figure out if it is for me.

As others have said, the companion book seems like a cash grab. I got the hard cover; slip cover is neat. Somewhat tempted to keep it as a collector item but I may return it.

Booted up Mega Man 2, managed to beat Quick Man's stage without the Flash Stopper.

Yeah, it s'alright.

This was my evening last night and I LOVED every minute of it.

This little gizmo is really reigniting my passion for the hobby.

Also, it was amazing/hilarious watching my 12 year old try some of these games and absolutely struggle (and I mean that in the nicest possible way as well) It really puts it in perspective how much game design has changed since I was a kid.

Still salty that they did not include Dragon Warrior, the first NES game I ever owned (along with SMB/Duck Hunt and SMB 3). I absolutely love this game.

Finally, got my controller shipped from amazon, I was very lucky to get the NES Classic Edition, in addition to this extra controler in just a minute... I hope you guys get your console very soon!!

wow, I had no idea how dark the wii u emulation was. One thing I definitely noticed was there was some noticeable input lag on snes games, I don't remember quite but either the gamepad or tv were a few frames ahead of eachother, either way it put me off playing those titles like that.

I'm really happy with how the games look and play. The menu is fantastic though I wish there were a way to go to the home menu without hitting the reset button.

The controller cord is farrrrrrrrrrrrrrr too short. It is not possible to play this without having the console far from the TV.

Plus after not playing most of these titles since the GBC era they feel very dated especially when comparing some of them (Super Mario 2 and 3 for example) to their GBA remakes.

I love the novelty and beauty of the system. Nintendo has struck a goldmine, make a SNES version with titles like Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, and Super Mario World and it will have astronomically higher sales.

Love the system but its crazy that I have to use two extension cords for the controller to comfortably reach my couch. Nintendo should have made the controllers wireless even if is not exactly "retro".

Yeah Wiimote support feels like a missed opportunity. Already formatted for D-pad + 2 button so it would be a great player 2 option, or it would make the new NES controller tethered but wireless.

Eh I think the NES has a higher place in pop culture than the SNES. Don't see it doing massively better.
