I just find this whole thing incredibly ironic.
We went for months and months and months without any hint of news or leaks on the horizon and now that the thing has been finally revealed, leaks are happening left and right lol

This is why Nintendo is always so secretive, because they know the second they reveal anything, suddenly leakers will feel empowered and everything will start coming out

I hope this is the true Pokemon console game I've always dreamt of.

I dunno how if it's basically a port of Sun and Moon. When I imagined a console Pokemon game, it wasn't the same as what we get on handhelds.

This port will be cool though. Then we can look forward to seeing if they really go all out with the power of the Switch for the real Switch Pokemon game.

This doesn't make much sense as Switch got leaked months before the official reveal during the time Nintendo said absolutely nothing.

As I've said before, i think Nintendo planned Switch release for this fall, hence more information reached people who wouldn't usually had gotten this information at this point and they seem to be talkative.

What I expect to happen from now on is Nintendo being even more secretive, even less people knowing about stuff until the very last moment.

It's weird that a "third version" of Pokemon won't be compatible for local multiplayer with the two base versions.

Still, good decision Nintendo, even if I'd prefer that Generation VII started with the Switch.

Yeah that's what throws me off as we could have easily had "Pokémon Z" this year and had Sun and Moon next year on the switch.

I guess Game Freak felt like getting a head start on gen 7, which makes me suspect that the Switch will also have 2 generation.

Small details of it were leaked and the vast majority have come in after the reveal trailer

Of course it will. Almost every handheld has had 2 generations, aside from the GB (only R/B/Y) and GBA (although that had Fr/Lg)

Oh I know that this stuff has shown up on sites like IGN in the U.S., but I don't consider people who frequent gaming sites to be "normal". Here on Gaf we're about as hardcore as you can get just by nature of spending our day talking to each other on a forum. Below that, there are people who just love gaming and Nintendo products. I don't think Nintendo's marketing is ruined by nature of either of those groups knowing about things ahead of time. I definitely understand the idea of lessoning the impact of the "presentation", but normal people won't be watching that live.

I'm thinking of the people who don't interact with gaming sites and social media on a daily or weekly basis. There will be an incredibly large audience that hears about this stuff for the first time on mainstream news after the January event. These leaks don't affect them at all, but they're the people who will make the Switch successful.

Actually, I was referring to regular, non-gaming mainstream media reporting on these games, often in the technology segments. There will be sufficient people who won't know, but there will also be many people, not only the hardcore, who will know about at least Mario 3D and Pokémon Stars.

"In fact, you may have already seen something from the Switch version. Sun and Moon's February reveal teaser culminates in split-second shots of Game Freak staff such as series boss Junichi Masuda and director Shigeru Ohmori working on Sun and Moon spliced with quick flashes of in-game concept art and models, including this HD in-game model for new bird Pokémon Pikipek. We've heard this is for the Switch edition:

This is the only thing that makes me doubt the accuracy of this. Looking at the trailer with that image of pikipek and the ingame version, they could very easily be the very same model. It sounds to me like someone who doesnt know much about game development saw that shot in the trailer and thought "Wow, thats a super hi resolution model! Might be a Switch version!" And ran with the idea from there.

Firstly: We already know that the models used in sun and moon are surprisingly hi res/ high poly count.

Secondly: Even if the model in the trailer is not the exact one used in Sun and Moon, it could just be the high res model used to make the lower res one for the actual game, a practice widely used nowadays

So using that as their big main proof is kind of odd to me.

Having said that they could be right about the game, and just tried to fill the blanks in themselves, or their informant could be filling in gaps, or who knows.

Could go either way, I'm just saying, take this part with a grain of salt.

Why? It doesn't seem like it would be difficult to bring the gameplay to console.
Local multiplayer with each player having their own save and screen was kind of a big deal. Worked better on portables, and unlike Monster Hunter didn't have the baggage of starting as a home game to work past in its transition to portables. There'd have been nothing stopping them from developing home versions alongside the portable ones, but it would've been a great increase in effort for relatively little increase in sales. So home got the Stadiums and Gale of Darkness and other side games to mostly work with the portable games.

I wonder if it would sell at $60.

Yes. Console game
This is becoming a blurred line. ESPECIALLY in this case as it's a version of an existing cheaper portable game.

Are we sure about that's out of the question? Haven't heard a lot said about Switch's wireless interconnectivity.

This is great news. Nintendo FINALLy learnt to have all its ducks lined in a row. I really can't not see this console carving a niche for itself beside then other two and being a success now, goddamn system seller right there.

If they added a few more bells and whistles here and there like better shaders, higher res textures and lighting I think they could get away with it at $60.

In its current form with only a resolution bump tho? Hardly.

Because the games aren't going to be completely unrelated, and a lot of people don't double dip on purchases or replay games (especially in such a short time period). Makes sense to me.

Pokemon games always do a third version so...

So then the rumor of "Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon within the first six months" was totally true.

And this:

It may be some time before Stars releases, however. We heard the game was initially a summer 2017 launch for Nintendo Switch, but has since been pushed back to later in the year.

Makes sense, if Zelda isn't quite ready yet so I bet it's taking Pokemon's slot.

I imagine the initial release was gonna be Zelda in spring, Pokemon for summer, Mario in the fall, but with Mario being ahead of schedule and Zelda needing more time they all got shuffled to be Mario in spring, Zelda for summer, Pokemon for fall.

And a lot of people who already have the first version(s) dont buy it. I don't see your point.

I bought Red, and I wasn't about to get Yellow later. I bought Silver and had no interest Crystal.

The third version has never released on a much better console than the first two (let alone be the first home console Pokemon). Even if people assumed a third version for this, it would have been safe to assume it would still be 3DS and Switch would get next gen.

I don't think this will hobble Sun and Moon by any stretch, but it will have some effect on sales.

A little birdie (one of my old contacts back from when I ran notenoughshaders) just told me Nintendo is fucking pissed about this leak. Like, apparently the marketing team is losing their shit

Well, they did have an incentive deal for purchasing Sun/Moon that ran out on January 11th, so people probably could have put this together on their own...

I thought all models were made to the same future-proofing standard though back in gen 6? Why would the new models they create for gen 7 be any different than the ones from gen 6?

This is exciting! I was hoping this would happen. I don't mind waiting until next year if it means playing the first made for TV mainline Pokemon game

No surprise.

I said they would be pissed. I've worked in teams that concern themselves with marketing leaks. Leaks like this do have some kind of effect on sales and revenue and buzz around your product. In an industry where people are budgeting what games to buy for the holidays, leaks like this are damaging.

Idk why people wouldn't double dip. The 3rd versions were never straightforward ports they usually added a lot of stuff. In black and whites case they just decided to make another game with the same geometry but different story. "Preorder canceled" seems really reactionary.

Pokémon games last usually dozens of hours. People do not always have much time to play games and thus prefer playing an enhanced version once instead of playing twice the same game. Even if the third version has additional content, not all people are ready to spend another several dozens of hours to enjoy what has been added. Better wait a bit more and directly enjoy the third version imo.

Especially as Sun / Moon aren't actually available to buy in europe yet
