Seriously WTF!? ....The PS4 Pro is embarrassingly loud :(

Funny how my Pro is the loudest (loudest = not nearly as much as my OG PS4) when I'm on the dashboard with a game running on background. OG wasn't like this.

My OG is like that. Only time it's louder is during the Uncharted games.

I don't think I'll be buying a Pro. PS4 very quickly went to one of my worst consoles I've owned because of the jet engine fan. I'm not sure I want to play the fan lottery again with the Pro because Sony clearly don't care. They had a chance to fix this lottery but didn't.

Mine is reasonably quiet, even when playing pro patched games. I was playing Bloodborne yesterday and I couldn't hear it at all sitting about 5 feet away.

I swapped my Pro out and this one is definitely quieter. Also the humming/buzzing noise is gone. I turned off all sound and sat 3 feet from it. Typically I'd be sitting 9 feet away so I wouldn't notice it at all with sound on. This one's a winner.

so far it's been very quiet. I have my fingers cross. Hope it stays this way

When I lay down in my bed my PS4 is 2 feet from my head and it's been very quiet.

After some intense Titanfall 2 MP matches, time to report in

Bad News

The thing still get's LOOUD during certain bits. Basically when probably everything is being loaded in at the beginning of a match as well when Titans start getting called in

Good News

This loudness eventually tapers off and settles in (as I'm sure the system recognizes adequate cooling has taken place). On top of that, even when the fan does kick into full-whirl mode, it's more of a "whoooosh" rather than a whistle as my previous PS4Pro put out. Essentially this means as I'm not really ever picking up that high pitch anymore that was driving me crazy

Consensus

While it's not as quiet as some would leave you to believe (4k/downsampled 60fps titles still gives makes this guy have to dig DEEEEP), it's certainly something I can now live with and it looks like I'll be keeping this one :)

Just recently unboxed mine and only tested it on home menu, but it's totally silent. Will try a game as soon as I can.

Compared to my OG PS4 which is noisy on the home menu and a jet engine in-game it is night and day.

Infinite Warfare's campaign and Titanfall 2 MP is a great way to test out the system's noise output, FYI
Just set your TV to mute and enjoy

I don't have either lol. The Tomorrow Children was the worst game on my OG PS4. Actual time for lift off noise material. Dylan said it is because it's shader heavy. I know it doesn't have a pro patch yet, but I'll try it on the Pro anyway.

UC4 was quite noisy as well, but pretty much in-line with any other game on my PS4, it's just noisy AF full stop.

Was playing watchdogs 2 last night with the Mrs asleep next to me the TV on 4(very low) the console 1 foot from the end of the bed and it never made a sound.

Honestly, how close do you sit to your PS4 Pro and do you play with your TV on mute?

I rarely, if ever hear my consoles. whether it s PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbone, etc.

I hope you're not suggesting that some of us might be lying about the Pro's noise.

Mine is significantly more silent, even my girlfriend noticed. But i dont have a 4k set so perhaps in 4k its louder.

Nah, as stated numerous times before in this thread, noise levels are very much a perception thing to some
That being said, those who say their systems are "whisper quiet" ALL the time, playing any game.... well, there's enough out there already on the internet to prove otherwise.

It's more about what your willing to tolerate

Mine is significantly quieter than the original PS4.
I have them both under my monitor and I sit maybe 40 cm from them (a little over a foot).
Before, while playing and with the speakers on, I could often clearly hear my PS4 running with its loud fan. With the Pro I can barely hear any noise, apart from the few moments when the blu-ray is spinning. And even then, I can hear just because the console is right there in front of me.

No there isn't. Every assessment of the Pro as "loud" that I've seen are subjective evaluations, which as you say are variable and unreliable. The only actual measurements bandied about, including new ones in this very thread, point the other direction.

For actual proof Pro is louder than a whisper, we'd need consistent measurements above 30dB from playing distances. I haven't seen any of those; do you have links?

Digital Foundry's take on it...

In terms of the acoustic performance of the Pro, it has much more in common with the c-chassis PS4 than the Slim. We were hoping that the larger console may integrate a larger fan - typically, the larger fan, the slower it needs to spin in order to displace the same amount of heat. We've yet to put the Pro through exhaustive tests here, but we note a peak 55dB during inFamous First Light gameplay, but really it's not so much the loudness that's the issue as opposed to the pitch. The fan spins up and down and is clearly audible from across the room. Initial tests on heat again show a profile similar to the standard PS4. We'll have more on this to share later, but right now, it's fair to say that a fair amount of heat is kicked out of the rear of the unit and in common with any current-gen console, it should not be housed in an enclosed area

Even they mention the "pitches" that the fan manage to hit, which is exactly what I observed and why I returned the first unit

This is all about a personal issue.. Yes, the cooling system(fan) makes noise.. In a completely quiet room. You have asked to mute the TV sound to prove your point.. Why? You're situation of not antagonizing your family is not the situation others might have.. Is the fan that loud it's waking your family while you play in a completely muted/quiet environment? Wear a Headset, you said that's not a solution but it is for your situation.

My og ps4 is pretty loud because I sit 2ft from it.. Oh well.

Mine sits almost right next to me and it's dead quiet. If the light bar isn't on, I wouldn't even know it's on. Granted, I have only played vanilla PS4 games so far (non-Pro enhanced) but it's a good sign so far.

Mine has been silent during World of final fantasy, titanfall 2 and dragon quest builders. Hopefully it stays that way. My launch ps4 was so loud I started using headphones.

Non Pro games are silent. Its PRO games that makes noise.

But the fan is larger.

I've been playing games (admittedly, on a 1080p screen) and this thing is so quiet I can't even hear it at all. Well, maybe that's because my PC tower is slightly louder, but still. This thing is not even close to being as loud as my original PS4.

It's also less than two feet from my head since it's on my PC desk.

After 2 days of use, I have to say my PS4 pro is much quieter than my launch base PS4. U4 makes it run the hottest, and even then it's fine. With other games it's much much quieter.

What are the chances that my pro stays silent for 3+ years of extensive use?

About the same as the original PS4. As in most of them became louder over time, if nothing else dust building up in the case and fan. Mine went from silent to near vacuum, I cleaned it up and replaced thermal paste and pads at year 2 and got another 9 months of silence before it started getting loud again.

I'd assume a 1 cm difference doesn't amount to the kind of airflow/noise difference they were talking about.

It's larger nonetheless, or does the sentence in the article imply they were hoping for a larger one than it is?

Hopefully I'll score in the system lotto, when I'll buy it on the 29th day. Two of my friends have said theirs are more silent than the original, so fingers crossed.

I haven't noticed any loud sound from my Pro, but the disc drive makes a weird sound when inserting a game. I just hope it doesn't indicate something wrong down the line.

Sony usually use cheap as shit noisy blu ray drives. Thankfully all games install to the hard drive and just use the disc on bootup for DRM check.

Mine is rather loud, but so was my launch PS4. All I've played so far is Tomb Raider, and the whine is noticeable from across the room while wearing headphones. Part of my problem is I house the PS4 in my entertainment center with a wood wall right behind it. I get some echoing as a result, and there's obviously heat. I might try relocating it.

I'll run that decibel test later today and see what I get.

Hmm, did you also have the whistling going up and down constantly? And that's gone now? Might have to try a replacement for mine as well.

It's not a perception thing for me. I can say with confidence that my PS4 Pro is whisper quite.

I have done a noise test with the game you have suggested quite a few times in this thread.

Titanfall 2 MP noise test: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5yiOHTl3lE

Used two separate decibel measures on my iPhone. One reads consistent 50s while on, the other 55. So that's that.

Ambient was giving me 30s before turning it on.

Mine seems to be at its loudest when just playing a Blu Ray, to the point where I'm thinking of just using my PS3 as my Blu Ray player again.

My PS4 is has very quiet expect for when it's spinning a disc installing a game. Still having the 4K display issue with my Vizo......

Granted, you're still a fair distance away from the noisy end of the system, which is hanging out the back. The mic noise doesn't help either.

Yeah the mic noise doesn't really convey how quiet the PS4 really is in my room. And I was actually quite a bit closer for this video than I usually sit during my game time.

Now I regret buying mine from a store an hour away. :I

Will replace and also report back. Playing Deus Ex the thing just goes up and down all the time and it's driving me mad tbh.

I think that might just be Deus Ex, because my Pro does the same damn thing in that game. But hey, if I'm wrong let me know so I can swap mine lol
