Seriously WTF!? ....The PS4 Pro is embarrassingly loud :(

I think that might just be Deus Ex, because my Pro does the same damn thing in that game. But hey, if I'm wrong let me know so I can swap mine lol

Does it sound like this too?

You actually hear the fan noise and the whistling quite well in this video. I think for most people, they only hear the fan noise? The annoying hum/whistle is what is unbearable. Every game does it, in Deus Ex it's extremely noticeable because in quiet parts where you are just standing around it just keeps going up and down forever. In this clip I just slowly walked through Prague.

With my TV going and me usually sitting on my bed i never hear the ps4 ever and i play all the games people are saying are making the system loud.

What kind of TV are you rocking there?

Sony BRAVIA KDL-32W653A

Yuuuuup!

EXACTLY THAT NOISE!

Thanks for sharing this video and nice to see I wasn't crazy :)

EDIT: Sticking that vid in the OP if you don't mind

As already mentioned in the thread, that measurement is from about 1 or 2 cm off the fan exhaust. Because they're a measure of power, decibels fall off quickly at distance. A 55dB sound at that range will only be ~25dB at two meters. This is well below a whisper.

Used two separate decibel measures on my iPhone. One reads consistent 50s while on, the other 55. So that's that.
What position and distance did you measure from?

That is interesting. Last night mine got most noisy while playing titanfall 2 multiplayer

I played a little bit of the campaign. I will try the MP tonight. I guess ambient temperatures matter as well. It's been pretty chilly at nights where I live

I'm using a 1080p tv and I really have no idea what mode games are running in. I did try infamous first light at the higher resolution setting and that game was also very quiet

Looking at the tear downs the Pro uses an embarrassingly small blower type heatsink. Under great stress this will get loud.

The unit itself isn't really that much bigger than the launch PS4. It looks big in pictures but when I put them side by side the difference isn't as big. Maybe they should have considered a bigger console if noise is an issue. So far, it hasn't been for me

Holy fuck! I have a Pro and had the fans kick into full when playing a checkerboarded game in 32 degree heat (Celsius) here, but I've never heard that whining noise you have in the background there. Mine is vertical (with official stand) but that does not sound at all healthy, you need to take that unit back ASAP.

My Pro makes exactly the same noise. But i didn't considered it to be too annoying, because my standard PS4 turned into jet engine mode, which was way louder.

Hmm, so this is not normal?

I get the same issue. My pro is still much quieter than my OG PS4 under load, but that whirring sound is a bit annoying. The fact that it was picked up by Eurogamer implies it is normal, but then there are other people claiming that they don't experience it.

It sounds common enough that it's not grounds for returning the console tbh. Plus, its way better than the jet engine OG PS4 under full load.

For me, the reason I started to think it was wrong, was using my OG PS4 again and noticing how much more pleasant the noise profile of it is. The maximum volume is about the same, except the Pro is also whistling and constantly going up and down. The vast majority of people commented on how the Pro was better in this regard and that is definitely not the case for me.

I will get a new one on Tuesday and will report if that one improves anything.

Is there a technical reason for the fans ramping up when you press the PS button, during a game, to bring up the dashboard? That's the only complaint I have with mine. I'm especially impressed with it when playing non-Pro PS4 games.

I'm not sure about the Pro but I read somewhere about the OG PS4 that when you press the PS button the game is still somehow 'active' but there is nothing to limit the frame rate in the background so the GPU goes into overdrive. Or something like that.

How does that compare against OG PS4.

Its all relative.

Surprisingly similar, though it's not as simple as you think. Basically the PS4 Pro only uses a little more power, due to efficiency gains in the process shrink. Still, to increase the fan by 10mm, use an extra couple of heat pipes, then expand the size of the heatsink by maybe 10% seems like they could have done more.

A friend and I got Pros at roughly the same time - his is almost but mine makes the whirring sound. His is vertical and mine is horizontal - anyone else found this?

That makes sense, thanks.

I tried moving my around since others said it might be too close to a barrier, but the whirling sound persists. Happens once I started Battlefield and the whirling wouldn't stop until I turned off the game. Going to get a replacement.

kind of wish digital foundry would stop fellating pixels for a moment and look into the noise issue and whether or not the pro has variable fan suppliers that could be the cause. its the main reason I wont make the jump to pro until the issue is understood or sony makes a revision. hate loud consoles and im not playing the lotto game again.

So I thought I'd try out all my Pro enhanced games to see what kind of noise levels I'd get. I've only been playing SFV and Xcom2 (no pro patch yet) and they both run quietly.

The Witness is still downloading so haven't tested that yet.

Hitman (digital) played a couple mission in Paris, ran quietly.

The Last of Us (digital) loaded up a new game (only walked around the girls beeroom) ran quietly.

Dishonoured 2 (disk) ran around the tutorial for a couple minutes, ran quietly.

Infamous Last Light (digital), started to get a bit noisy, noticeable during quiet moment.

Uncharted 4 (disc) really fucking noisey with the disc drive going whilst the game was installing. I don't mind that as I'd happily just wait 15minutes for games to install. But after the install finished PS4 still noticeably making noise (This is a day later letting the system cool down). Playing the epilogue walking around the quiet house there's a really noticeable high patch whirring noise that I don't think I'd happily put up with.

Is this the kind of noise everyone is getting with uncharted 4? Or should I look to get this swapped

Sorry for the vertical video

I've had similar weird issues with UC4 disc. If you eject the disc the noise stops straight away? For some reason the drive is really noisy with UC4 and it doesn't stop after the game starts/finishes loading. Even more bizarrely, I started playing Everyone gone to the rapture yesterday, loaded my save but could hear the system louder than normal. It was the UC4 disc in my pro. My boy must have been playing it earlier and left the disc in. The minute I ejected and the system was silent again.

Yep just tried it, uncharted 4 disk being in the system makes It run louder, even without ever starting the game and playing something else. Removing the disc cuts the sound instantly.

Tried with Dishonured 2 and the drive sound stops after about 30seconds, even when you are playing it.

Edit: the uncharted 4 disc drive sound just stopped after what like 5 minutes.

my launch PS4 started off fairly quiet and gradually got louder.

The PRO makes some noise when installing games and reading a disc but other than that I cannot hear it.. might get louder later on but if yours is very loud already then something is probably off with it.

sounds like U4 might be the culprit for most people.

Testing my system (rough test) while playing TF2 and it averages around 50db. My launch PS4, though, is 65db and it's pretty obvious.

Trying out U4 again and typically it not as load now, the disc drive has stopped this time, and the whirring is at an relatively expectable level :/

Maybe because I've moved the system back into my cabinet, perhaps whatever's making the noise is sitting better now?

I got a years warrenty with Amazon and Sony so I in no rush, I haven't had a problem with any games I'm actually playing through at the moment. I'll see how it handles games over the next 6 months. If it's annoying load with every new release I'll look to get it swapped

Mine is very quiet - just a slight hum when doing anything other than:

1. Playing Unchartered 4 - the fans get louder and are noticeable if the TV is on a lowish volume or there is a break in the action.

2. Playing Fifa 17 - the fans get a bit louder - but there is a fan spinning up and down which is noticeable as it changes pitch. Not that noticeable as there is constant noise in Fifa crowd/menu music.

3. After playing either of these games the fans stay on until the unit goes to rest whatever I do afterwards.

The house is about 20c and the Pro sits in an entertainment centre with a closed back so this may have an effect. My guess is just that the games patched for pro (like UC4 and Fifa 17) will make it sound as loud as a gaming PC because that is what it now is essentially. I should add that my UC4 and Fifa are the disc versions so the drive is obviously whirring a bit too.

Also - we have had three years to get used to the PS4 - so the fact that the noise is different will make it sound 'louder'. I think it i still quieter than the OG.

I think there will be the odd faulty unit, but in the main we just have to expect fan noise for the patched titles stretching the unit - unless you have a cold room etc.

Get that replaced OP. I had a similar problem where my launch Xbox one was loud and everyone else was whisper quiet. Something is wrong with yours.

I'd like to note that there isn't really such a thing as "as loud as a gaming PC". A gaming PC could be whisper-quiet sub-30 dB or ear-bursting 70 dB at full load, that completely depends on the priorities when building and configuring it.

That's like salt in the wound. I took special care to build a very quiet gaming PC and it was great - then I installed a 4K capture card with a small diameter fan. Hate that thing. Need to find an alternative cooling solution...

This.

My Pro does the same noise with all the "Pro" games.
But she is quiet with classic non patched PS4 games like Rocket League, Dragon quest builders, Dead Rising, etc.

Mine is surprisingly loud with Mafia 3, which AFAIK, hasn't been patched for the Pro. Others witness the same ?
When it gets loud, I can hear the flow of air but also the sound of the fan spinning (low frequency sound).

In games like Infamous or Tomb Raider, it is much quieter in 30fps mode than 60fps.

It has according to the dev.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Been playing a lot of Killing Floor 2 and I'm honestly worried about how loud and hot it gets. The fan is doin' work. :/

i've been playing Skyrim and WD 2 a ton. Easily 60+ hours between the two games since the Pro launched, it sits about 2 feet from me and I've never heard it.

that is odd, I've been playing watch dogs 2 and the system sounds like a vacuum at times.

Good idea. It's hardly going to be super accurate but it sure is a lot better than people just giving their subjective impression.
Mine was in the 33 range at main screen. 38-43 playing the intro to last of us with fps locked and unlocked. Measured with phone 4 inches from right front of console.

Noticeable airflow but no whining sound. Ambient temperature 73f.

I've been running UC4 with HDR running. Console goes from silent to slightly audible in a quiet room. Still nothing like my original PS4.

Without taking about whining, do you hear the fan whirring / spinning when you get close to the console ?

Same here and UC4 does seem to push the system harder than any other title I've tried. It's not silent but it's nothing like the hair dryer mode my launch PS4 would occasionally enter, and I've never heard the pitched whistling some report. The system is horizontal and sitting on thick glass in a stand with open back and sides.

Man this is soooooo sad... I was thinking buying me a PRO, but now I'm thinking whether I should just get a Slim.
