Indie Games 2016 [November] Lets play some Indies!

Just saw Destructoid mention this game Resin:
It has regressive leveling system, which means that every time you win a boss fight your character will become weaker, forcing you to adapt to new play styles and try out new strategies. It features a branching open world, multiple endings and bosses with different mechanics.

The trailer shows a really nice atmosphere.

This looks really cool. Brb

Yeah, I was thinking about that as well... great timing. And I hope I get to put some time into some of the GOTY contenders you guys are recommending.
Be sure to check out Sethian. Uniqueness alone, it's definitely going to be somewhere on my list

Quoting for new page:

I have been thinking about it for a while now.

Currently:
  1. The Witness
  2. No Man's Sky
  3. Ghost
  4. Sorcery! (I'm half-way through the last part (n°4), I really enjoyed parts 1 to 3)
  5. Slayaway Camp
  6. Orwell (I'm waiting for the last episode (n°5) this Thursday, but I liked episodes 1 to 4)

Other good contenders, but that I would need to play more to know their ranks:
  • Owlboy
  • Seasons after Fall
  • Pavilion
  • The Warlock of Firetop Mountain
  • Obduction
  • SHENZHEN I/O
  • Day of the Tentacle Remastered

Games that are not yet released but that could make it into my GOTY list:
  • Quern (November 28)
  • Miegakure (December ?)

Quoting for new page:
Man, there's going to be some really diverse list this year. Aside from The Witness and Sorcery and potentially miegakure, none of those will be on my list.

Definite contenders
- Inside
- Oxenfree
- Factorio
- Stephen's Sausage Roll
- House of the Dying Sun
- N++
- Thumper
- The Witness
- Sorcery 4

Under consideration/Need to play more
- Thoth
- Sethian
- SuperHOT
- Devil Daggers
- Samorost 3

Upcoming potentials
- Miegakure
- Islands
- Astroneer

I try to constrain my choices to games that marked me in such a way that I still remember them acutely months after, or that completely fascinated me so that I would play and finish them without getting bored (time flies and the game is already finished).

So some games that I liked, such as INSIDE, get factored out. I remember some scenes but the story was too abstract to mark me.

Sara Is Missing - Free (PC, Mac, Android)
7WWF3al.jpg

https://monsoonlab.itch.io/sim

Experience first hand a found footage style mobile game. Sara is Missing (SIM) is all about the horrors of mobile technology and touches upon the voyeuristic pleasure that one gets from prying through another person's personal items.

Resin - $4.99 (PC)
Mxo1QR9.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/525630/

An action-adventure game about an android made out of Resin who struggles to put an end to machine reign.

Rather enjoying my time with Sethian. The language is nicely accessible to get you into the swing of things quickly but their is a fair bit of complexity once you get the basics.
With the film Arrival, this game seems well timed. I hope I get the time to check it out, considering it seems to be pretty short.

This week was released the first game from Teku Studios, Candle, which was successfully kickstarted ~3 years ago.

I already played ~2 hours and the game is lovely!

The art is amazing, everything, even the animations, are hand made with this mind blowing watercolor art.

The music is nice and the voice actors of the narrator do a great job for both the English and the Spanish versions. Such a surprise to hear that in the Spanish version the actor is Pepe Mediavilla! (the voice of Morgan Freeman, Ian McKellen...). I think that the English actor is also quite known at least in video games but I am not sure who he is.

I was expecting a point and click adventure but everything is controlled with kb, which is a bit weird for the first minutes but controls smoothly after a while. The gameplay and puzzles are quite good, it really has this old school adventure game style.

It reminds me a lot of Samorost and The Neverhood. Try it out!

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
No GOTY love for Firewatch? Oi!

Cant remember anyone being too excited about it. I was a bit disappointed by the structure, world design and overall limitations. It was a decent little experience but nothing outstanding for me.

This sounds cool (am a massive fan of Neverhood), just bought it. Thanks for adding to my backlog! XD

I came here to ask if anyone had played this. Someone in Steam described it a mix of Limbo and Machinarium and it looks so good.

How are the controls though, can you use a controller or just kb? Is it completely linear or more exploratory? Discrete scenes or interconnected world?

As much as I love indie games, I feel like 99% of them are wayyy too difficult to learn and as such, I'm terrified of picking up a new one. Can someone recommend me something that is generally loved but can be played without the ridiculous difficulty of rogue like games?

Too difficult:
Enter the Gungeon

Similar or a little bit harder than:
Stardew Valley

Thanks Indie gaf!

Ambient Mixtape 16 has released today, featuring 9 (1 was added an hour after this post went live) games produced by different studios under certain restrictions. Picked Pol Clarissou's "t- e ni hтm-are of·`a c ty" to try first - deeply claustrophobic and stifling. Can't wait to load up Exit 19 (Fan of Squires' "Tonight You Die") and the others soon.

I have been there twice. Twice isn't enough, to be honest, but past the first time I have only been there in fragments, dreams and daydreams, and something half-assembled. The sum of an infinite series is finite, if each successive term diminishes. 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + ... sums to two, no matter how many more times I see us walking through jioufen in the cool night, making our way back to the bus stop.

An interesting article about Indiepocalypse.

And a new game, more NSFW than you could ever imagine: Genital Jousting. Developed by the Broforce team. Published by Devolver.

Genital Jousting is an online and local multiplayer party game about flaccid penises and wiggly anuses for up to eight players at once. Players control a detached penis complete with testicles and an anus. Multiple game modes provide a stimulating orgy of objectives: penetrate and be penetrated as fast as possible or compete in absurd, silly and sexually suggestive games and challenges.

If this is something that makes you uncomfortable or sounds unappealing, please do not purchase or play Genital Jousting, or even continue reading.

Most were untrained. They didn’t understand how to run a business. Many had never made a professional game before. So they experimented, often wildly. Bizarro mutants popped up. Journey. Day Z. Tower Defense. What can you do with the internet? Or Flash? Or a touch screen. Or a one person team? Who knows; let’s just try something. Will Wright, gushed about the “Cambrian explosion”. New genres were born. That was 2008.

What a time. I look back on it fondly.
But that hasn't changed. There are always new indie devs working on debut games. First time teams, one man projects, devs experimenting with the tactile nature of touch

I find it odd that he thinks it's not like that anymore. If anything, we've gotten more experimentation, in more genres, than before.

But I also agree that the scene was only gotten more competitive and crowded. It can be hard for good games to stand out without the push of a publisher. Look at games like Brigador or Duskers, both highly praised by the sites that covered them and well received on Steam but still relatively unknown

And a new game, more NSFW than you could ever imagine: Genital Jousting. Developed by the Broforce team. Published by Devolver.

Huh....

Huh

This is what happens when you whisk your entire team off to a tropic island and lock them in a house to game jam 24/7.

AM16 pulled my head above the water long enough to feel like swimming towards Islands right away. It's as short as Carl advertised - about 40 minutes - but it never repeats itself, despite the central mechanic severely limiting what a scene can do. Burton's hazy dreamscapes reminded me a lot of the mystery in old web games back in the early 00s, where the creator's intent was impossible to nail down, and there was no telling what could come next. Some sequences have a more sensible logic to follow that makes it easier to 'accept' the space, but I could never predict what was going to happen whenever I clicked on the next series of flashing lights. It even subverts pacing expectations by mixing in shorter pieces between more complex, multi-stage gags.

Be it due to the sheer absurdity of the progression in a non-space, or the potential commentary for what the non-space is trying to say about its real-world counterpart, Islands had me giggling at its very dry sense of humor. Simple laughs, but the fact that they got me to express anything at all after being so emotionally flatlined towards games over the past year says a lot about the game's wit. Or maybe I'm just that broken! Either way... it's likely to be a one-time-use sort of experience for most, but I feel comfortable enough saying that the moments where each scene clicks easily justifies the asking price. Those who seek out the strange will find unusual comforts here in the islands.

I went to the first day of IndieCade Europe today and it was pretty cool.

It started with a keynote by Matt Nava (Flower, Journey, Abzû) about games as art.

Then I missed a talk by Diane Landais and Elizabeth Maler from Accidental Queens, which is the studio behind A Normal Lost Phone (Steam link). I am a bit mad about missing that talk since the echoes that I got is that it was interesting.

I have then attended a talk by Yoan Fanise (Valiant Hearts, Lost in Harmony) about tackling serious issues with gaming (respectively World War I and brain cancer).

In the afternoon, there was a talk by Alexis Moroz, a game designer of escape rooms, in real life and in VR. The talk was supposed to be in French but the guy, despite being French, uses a lot of English words. You could feel the creativity behind the chaos.

I had a choice between a talk by Santa Ragione and a talk by the guys behind Mother Russia Bleeds. Since I had already watched the making of for MRB, I went with the talk by Pietro Righi Riva, director of Santa Ragione (FOTONICA, MirrorMoon EP, and Wheels of Aurelia), in which he advocated tabula rasa so that video games could appeal to a broader audience. It was pretty interesting in its radical aspect.

Then there was a live-play with Fakhra AlMansouri (Who Lurks, which is a local party game with just one smartphone, a bit like Werewolves), Philomena Schwab (Niche - a genetics survival game), and Nicolae Berbece (Move or Die). That last guy is full of energy, I understand why he is going to give a talk about Creating a great experience for players on the show floor tomorrow.

Olivier Madiba gave a talk full of energy as well about Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan, the first indie game 100% made in Africa, more precisely in Cameroun. I think I am going to buy it from Steam just to support that incredible guy.

Finally, Rami Ismail (Nuclear Throne, Ridiculous Fishing, LUFTRAUSERS, Super Crate Box) gave a talk about games as cultural artefacts. The idea is that games reflect the cultures of their creators, no matter what. I liked the fact there were several examples, the first of which is one of my favorite puzzle games, Farsh by Mahdi Bahrami, who still has not released Engare by the way (6 months late...).

Wait, did you have to back at a higher tier to get new backer demos or was that for every backer? The only one I've played was the one released during the Kickstarter

Yeah, I think these demos are for a higher tier.

edit: $90. Should be free to all backers. It's really impressive stuff.

Any games you're looking to pick up in the fall/winter sales that'll be popping up soon? I don't know if Ultimate General: Civil War will get a discount, but I'm definitely want to grab that, and then I'm hoping Rogue System gets a nice sale

And let's get to page 3

I went to the first day of IndieCade Europe today and it was pretty cool.

...
Sounds like a great time. One day, I hope to check out one of these indie conferences and expos. PAX East would be easy, Boston is only three hours away.

NYU also has a really active Game Center, and they do game showcases and events every week. As expected a lot of talented students there; Soft Body was a project from one of the teams there. That's another thing I'd like to check out
