Phil Spencer talks about working with Nintendo on Minecraft and overall

http://www.ausgamers.com/news/read/3563821/phil-spencer-id-love-to-see-mario-on-xbox

"I’d love to see Mario on Xbox. As someone who’s been in this industry and played games forever, I’ll still say it: Nintendo has the strongest first-party of anybody. They’re just fantastic and the memories that they have instilled in so many of us, who’ve played their games and had those delightful experiences, having those on Xbox would be great. Obviously we have Minecraft on Nintendo and when that opportunity came up to work with them on Minecraft, you know, some people might look at it and say ‘why would you even do that?’, but with Nintendo, it’s been a great partnership on Minecraft. In fact they put Mario in Minecraft on Wii U with the mash-up skin pack. And continuing to work with them on that and building a stronger relationship... I mean if that paid dividends down the road that lead to something else, that would be fantastic. I know I get questions all the time on would I ever like to see Banjo in Super Smash Bros. and I’m, like, “yes, I would do that in a second”. And certain people think I’m saying that as some sort of PR answer and I’m, like, why wouldn’t you?

Anyway, I’m a big Nintendo fan and I think they’ve been incredibly important for the games industry, they do a great job with younger audiences, and if we ever had a chance to work with them in the future, I would absolutely do it."

Phil's made no secret about wanting Mario on XB and even Banjo in Smash before, but I'm left wondering that if he's so eager to work with Nintendo, wants Banjo in Smash, and fully knows about their younger demographic and whatnot, why not allow Rare's legacy on their systems?

You may say "well they're a competitor", and you are right, but he says right there he's fine with Banjo in Smash, and MS even allowed Jetpac to remain intact in DK64 on Wii U VC (being the one and only game on both Wii U and Rare Replay). Plus Microsoft Studios (the Xbox team) themselves were directly involved with Minecraft on Wii U, complete with their logo and everything.

Plus of course we have their GBA and DS support of Rare and other IPs from years ago.

Well, I guess what Phil's okay with may differ from what the top folks at Microsoft would be okay with, he may be the head of Xbox IIRC, but I don't know if that means he's free to make those choices... is he?

What are your thoughts?

You have to admit, he has a point here.

If the Switch fails and forces Nintendo out of the hardware market, you know Phil will the first one to pick up the phone to call Nintendo to try to make a deal.

I still believe there is a slight chance for a deal like having banjo in smash plus VC releases for all banjo games in nintendo consoles.

Or better yet a Rare Pack with Banjo, Rash, Fulgore, and Conker

Let's go full crazy: Nintendo gets Banjo in Smash, Microsoft gets something like Pius Agustus (From Eternal Darkness) in Killer instinct.

I feel like microsoft needs more games aimed at younger demographic and not just hardcore gamers. Just got an xbox one and it;s a fantastic console, but I feel like adding more experiences for younger audience would improve the ecosystem a bit. Diversify the range of experience. I know there are a bunch of indies, at the very least try to market those more.

Thinking about this, there is one thing that could be done and that looks pretty harmless anyway : it is both companies working together to make a game that will be released on consoles of both companies.

I think a Switch version of Minecraft is definitely needed at launch. Just a straight port of the Wii U version would be sufficient.

This is the million dollar question.

A game like Rare Replay makes so much sense to port over to something like the Switch. I like that he wants Banjo in Smash but I'll admit I've always seen his answer as PR. If Minecraft could make it to the Wii U, I hope Rare games can one day as well.

I'm thankful Microsoft has Phil Spencer running Xbox. He's a really cool guy.

Agreed would be pretty sweet. I'm surprised they didn't ask for mario pack into xbox version of minecraft as part of port deal though

I'm fairly confident that Microsoft would be more likely to leave gaming hardware than Nintendo.

Lol. What?

Can only assume this is reference to old quote of Microsoft execs thinking they owned Donkey Kong when they bought Rare. Hopefully. Lol

Pretty sure it's a reference to Chris Seavor (Conker) mentioning on twitter how staff from Microsoft saw a DK poster just after the buyout, and thought for that moment that they owned DK. :p Think he quoted it as "oh, we own DK now?" or something. :p

Edit: Ah, beaten!

Banjo & Kazooie being in Smash Bros. is probably my biggest gaming dream, honestly.

Oh, and bringing back the original Diddy Kong Racing for the VC, with Banjo and Conker intact, would be nice as well.

I feel like if anybody could work out a business deal to get Banjo into Smash it would be Kimishima.

Banjo Pilot and Grunty's Revenge could be released on VC alongside Diddy Kong Racing. I would legit lose my mind if Banjo got into Smash before K Rool though. I want both.

Also they MUST have done something behind the scenes cause DK64 on VC still has Jetpak in it.

How about just letting Rare make their IPs like Banjo and Conker without Microsoft getting in their way on Xbox? Isn't that the reason why they bought Rare in the first place? To have more Nintendo-esque games on their platforms?

Do you think Phil knew what Switch was before it was revealed to the public? Mojang was not on the partners list Nintendo put up but Havok was.

I think Spencer would like to do a larger deal with Nintendo to where they get some of Nintendo's big IPs on XB1/Win 10. I don't think they'd port anything over other than Minecraft without getting something in return, even if Rare Replay obviously would easily be profitable to port over.

That's where the PR statement is.

If memory serves, a number of staff who worked at Rare under Nintendo, giving their games that unique feel, have long since moved on. Rare simply isn't the team it once was when it comes to the games they once made.

Sea of Thieves does look pretty cool though.
