NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Funny, it looked harder than the first Batman to me.
It may look harder, but trust me, it's not. The sections in levels are pretty short, mostly not too difficult besides 3-1 and 5-1 and the bosses are pretty easy for the most part. You get powerups as well like being invincible and destroying everything in your path for a limited amount of time. Also going to each stage refills your health to full rather than just 4 bars of health in the 1st Batman game.

It bothers me that Return of the Jokers are getting destroyed to make Mr Gimmicks. It also annoys the fuck out of me that it's cause the price of RoTJ to fucking skyrocket.

Timu, not everyone can be so hardcore. I am OK using lives and continues!
I'm ok with that too, for any game even. I just want to see if I can do it, that's all.=p

I could see no death running it being hard, but it's not that hard to tank your way through if you don't care about not dying :)

Return of the Joker is ridiculously easy.
I spent most of my time mastering the 3rd and last stages more than anything, lol.

Oh man, the last stage is a tough one for sure. I don't think I've ever actually beat Batman, made it all the way to the end, but couldn't finish.
Oh wow, really?=O The Joker can be tough but punch at perfect spots to beat him.

One of the toughest boss fights on the system, or at least to perfect.

I beat him the other day just using the punch, it's avoiding that gun shot that's the trick, absolutely destroys your life bar.

Quick question. If I were to play the FDS version of Castlevania 3 through my everdrive in my front loader. Woud I get the extra sound channel and the better music? Anyone know?

CV3 isn't an fds game, but includes a sound chip in the cart. But just as with fds games, your nes would have to be modded for the sound to be audible. Everdrive fds sound emulation leaves a lot to be desired though, and I'm not sure how accurate the VRC6 emulation is either.

Yeah that sucks. Espeacially because ROTJ is one of the most incredible NES games from a technical perspective.

Interesting. I'm playing the Famicom version of 3 on my Everdrive right now and the sound is different/better than the NTSC-U version

Yeah the game is a visual wonderland.

Well, y'all just pushed me to buy a copy. Didn't know about the Gimmick donor situation. Ouch.

Akumajou Densetsu (Castlevania 3) actually sounds really good on the Everdrive in my AV Famicom. FDS games sound terrible, but the VRC6 emulation seems pretty good!

Yeah it's still inaccurate, clear audible differences. But it at least sounds good and in tune. FDS however suuuuuuuuucks on Everdrive.

i might get a top loader w dogbone and zapper for 100, is that worth it or too much? i have 2 hours to decide =)

NES or Famicom? Not exactly a deal but you're not overpaying. Just remember that you'll have to mod the NES for even shitty composite. At least an AV Fami already has that. Though I assume you'll be headed toward an RGB mod either way at some point...

Still, an AV Fami is more versatile. It's the "best NES."

ok, thanks, i don't know too much about composite so thanks! i was looking at the nes top loader.

??

The standard mod for a top loader matches the circuit of the AV Famicom, and provides top quality composite.

Guess I should have just said "composite" rather than "shitty composite." Seems like a waste to mod a console just to get to composite. I use composite on my NES and it's fine, but my advice was just based on the typical flow of conversation here, which is that composite is not so hot.

cool, thanks guys, i ended up getting a CIB super return of the jedi and a loose copy of axelay instead. i'll post pics on the snes thread when they come in.

So I've been cleaning my house for christmas and found this obscure NES game that I completely forgot that I bought for 50,- NOK (~$5) a few summers ago at this huge ass flea market. Didn't think much of it at the time and put it away in a box where it's been gathering dust ever since.

The Trolls in Crazyland [NES-C5-NOE]

Thought it might be of interest to you guys. I've never been the biggest gaming collector, mainly due to lack of disposable income. Didn't find much information online but it is kinda rare apparently, which was a pleasant surprise. I always evy people lucking out on rare retro games. Guess it was my turn this time, and I didn't even know it.

This is a pretty neat little game, I remember seeing it in Nintendo Power as a preview, and then later wondering where it ever went (it never released in the U.S. as originally planned).

I bought a full on NTSC / CIB reproduction last year from someone who does that sort of thing on NintendoAge. Keep meaning to go back and finish it, but haven't done so yet.

Good catch on Trolls in Crazyland. The japanese original (Doki Doki Yuuenchi) goes for a quite a bit cheaper, and it's totally "you can play this".

Maybe I'll give the game another go in the near future then. I know I have to do some maintenance on my NES controllers as the rubber pads in all of them are in awful shape. I see the cheap controller repair kits floating around on Ebay, does anyone have any experience with those?

Edit: I guess my question don't need an answer. I mean, I don't remember what it feels like to play with a new fully working controller, so a few 3rd party parts won't really take away something from the "OG" experience in my case. And these kits are cheap so what could really go wrong.

Fed up with carts not playing I finally installed my Blinking Light Win last night. I'm not sure why I was waiting, lol. Both carts that were giving me issues work on the first try always now. Great product so far IMO. I kind of miss the pressing down of the cart (retro feels) but not enough to constantly remove and re-insert carts trying to get them to work.

Just give the controllers a good once-over. It's dead easy. They should be nearly good as new unless they've been truly beaten up over the years. Here's the best tutorial I've seen. It's a Master System controller, but it's exactly the same process since this controller is nearly identical to an NES one.
Thanks! Followed the guide with two controllers that was in best condition. The main problem with some of my controllers is that the rubber pads are completely borked to the point where they almost don't hold together at all, which results in some terrible feedback when pressing buttons. They're not as "tactile" as the better ones that I have. Bought some original refurbished controllers while I was at it.

I scored two more CIB black box games on eBay today for decent prices. I now have only four more to get (besides Stack Up and DK Jr Math, which I won't be pursuing as CIBs).

Still need Soccer, Clu Clu Land, DK and DK Jr. All really pricey. It'll be a while....

Any recommendations on SD cards for the N8 Everdrive? Picking one up soon and I heard it can be a bit finicky? I don't have excess cards and would prefer to not strike out when getting one for it.

It was the annual Mjøsmarkedet at Biri Travbane near Lillehammer. It is primarily an event for vintage car enthusiasts but people are free to set up stands around the entire racetrack and the surrounding area and sell whatever they want.

Nice! Guess I need to keep up the search :)

I think I used the old default micro SD from my New 3DS. Even 4GB was more than enough space.

I'm using Kingston 16 GB micro SD HC, might be a bit overkill size-wise but they've been good. They come with the adapter to use with SD2SNES too.

Did something change or is the info on the site not right? On Krikzz's stuff he lists the N8 as using regular SD cards

line from the site

"Supports SD (SD & SDHC) cards up to 32GB."

Like the SD2SNES which uses a regular SD it says

"SD/SDHC/SDXC support (tested up to 64GB; no exFAT support so SDXC cards must be reformatted using FAT32)"

Compare that to say the TurboEverdrive that uses MicroSD the line says

"Supports MicroSD cards up to 32GB."

You guys are saying you use MicroSDs directly on your N8s?

Not that big of a deal but I already bought a regular SD memory card for when I get an N8.

*edit*

Yeah doing some research on pictures it looks like the N8 does indeed using a microSD card. Oi he should really update the info page.

i honeslty don't know if it does, i wanna say yes cause most of them do? i only use a micro on my Mega ED and even that's a mistake, it sucks to have to open it to add new mods/etc.

speaking of, wish i still had a tiny < 1GB SD for the master ED coming in, all that extra space feels wasteful

Ahhhhh, he uses the same like info page and just swaps out the picture for them. Hence the discrepancy. Ohh well I can use the regular SD I got for when I eventually get the mega everdrive. I'll have to order a micro one for the Famicom N8.

Weird little store locally over here had this beaut for $30 today. It was in perfect shape, and some days it's my favorite game ever, so I couldn't say no.

The dude at the counter was really confused about what it was. I tried to explain it and he replied "I grew up with a Nintendo but I ain't never heard of nothing like this before".
