I found London Has Fallen to be.... just incredible

I don't know what it is about me, maybe I've become more forgiving lately, or maybe this movie truly is awesome. I saw it two nights ago and really loved it.

Right after watching the movie, I checked out the older review thread on GAF: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1193686&page=2. And I noticed some posters saying that the type of people that enjoy this movie would vote for Trump.

I really really really dislike Trump. If I was American I wouldn't vote for him. The biggest takeaway I had from London Has Fallen was the following:

I was mainly enamored by dedication, effort, and sacrifices made by the American Secret Service and other servants surrounding the US President (specifically the president in London Has Fallen) and their devotion to protect him at all costs. My favourite scene (one that literally made me say "okay, we have to rewind and watch this again") is when the president is attempting to escape by air on three helicopters. First helicopter (not the president's) goes down via rocket launcher. Then the president's helicopter and a second helicopter evade further rockets with flares. Then they run out of flares and without hesitation, the second helicopter says "Preparing for sacrifice" and they take the hit for the president. Now that fucking hit me hard. What I immediately thought was "No fucking way does Trump deserve that level of commitment and sacrifice". The scene gets even better because the president's helicopter also gets shot, and the way the camera followed the helicopter spinning in the air, with Gerard Butler at the last possible second activating the air cushions, and then the helicopter grazing an office building, that whole sequence was mesmerizing.

I loved the scene so much because of the unwavering service these guys are devoting to the US President. The actor playing the president is worth protecting. But I couldn't shake this feeling that if it were Trump in that helicopter, it wouldn't be worth it.. Aaron Eckhart was worth protecting. But I honestly had this feeling like... it just wouldn't be worth it at all for a US soldier to say "Preparing for sacrifice" and take a hit for someone like Trump.

Anyway, putting that aside, I just found the movie's action scenes (explosions, firefights, gunshots) to be fantastic. I loved the wide shots of London showing black, billowing smoke across the city - they really drove home that London has been well and truly fucked. Loved the cheesy over the top rah-rah American patriotism and badassery. Pretty much from start to finish I enjoyed this film.

I imagine this is how the British police were portrayed in the movie

I found it to be an extremely generic action movie with your typical bad english middle eastern bad guys and Gerard Butler being Gerard Butler.
But nothing wrong with liking the movie as much as you did OP. These movies continue to be successful because they have an audience.

Their sacrifices would have had more impact if the movie wasn't such a damn cartoon. It's hard to take anything seriously when there is so much goofy shit going on.

"Go back to Fuckheadistan or wherever it is you're from."

Awful.

There are so many valid criticisms you can level towards this movie - agreed. I think that the vivid and vulgar action make up for it. I absolutely loved the way the camera followed certain action sequences (like the multiple explosions, reminiscent of Bane's explosions across Gotham in The Dark Knight Rises, or the way the camera is fixed to give you a close-up look at someone getting shot in the head at point blank range). The action was just plain satisfying.

But I'm middle-eastern myself and when Gerard Butler's character said that, I thought "Yep, that's a racist line". But he delivered it with so much shameless patriotism and devotion to his president that I didn't care, hehe.

Such an awful movie but I'm glad to have watched it. I loved the car chase where the baddies are following behind and manage to kill the red shirt driving the car, Gerald then takes the wheel and somehow finds himself driving backwards down the street going face to face with the terrorists and yet for some reason they can't be bothered to shoot at the easy target.

I couldn't even finish it. I loved Olympus, but this movie was just so fucking stupid beyond reason. It's right down there with the last Airbender for me as one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Literally everything that happened in this movie, I just couldn't even believe they would think the audience is that stupid. Stupid characters, stupid story, stupid everything.

I've seen the first one, but not this one. I liked White House Down better, to be honest. At least that felt like it had a bit of a sense of humour about itself.

Aren't they making a third '[...] Has Fallen' film, or did I imagine that?!

I found it to be one of the most cringeworthy movies i've seen in a long time.

My girlfriends' family was insisting on watching it and I had to sit through the entire thing. I wanted to scream into a fucking pillow. I left that night dumber than I went in.

It wasn't bad, but I did find its tone to be a bit nastier than Olympus which was off-putting.

Sounds like her family lucked out with her dating someone so condescending about them.

I want to say: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But on the inside I'm saying: =(

Really, really enjoyed Olympus Has Fallen as a great Die Hard-esque film and the much superior release of the two White House terrorism movies of that year. But damn, I did not enjoy London Has Fallen when I saw it in the theater. It just felt like an amateurish version of the previous film that tried to expand its scope too far and lost what made the original so fun. I'll have to go back and watch it again at some point to see if I was just in a bad mood when I saw it or if my initial feelings were valid.

It was awful.

Terrible CGI.
Ridiculous story (London is literally overrun by terrorists and shuts the city down?)
Bad one-liners.
Awful cinematography.

I loved it. Can't wait for the next one. The world needs more so-bad-its-good action films.

The only thing I genuinely disliked was the politics about trying to make drone strikes seem like a good thing.

SHUTUP BUTTWAD.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Its funny this topic popped up as I watched this last night. Its got some really shitty dialogue and acting at times but the set pieces were not bad though it does stretch incredulity that a terrorist organization could infiltrate so many different agencies in like two years time without anyone noticing. Of course its a dumb bombastic action movie so its not like it bothered me that much and overall the action was decent enough. It felt like an extended segment out of a Call of Duty game.

Edit: I also hope these movies continue and start racheting up the insanity of things sort of like the Fast and Furious movies. The next one should be Luna Has Fallen about terrorists taking over the brand spanking new state of the art moonbase while the president is visiting or Gerard Butler is taking a vacation with his family there as reward for so much President saving.

Then the fourth movie can be Mars Has Fallen and so on.

London Has Fallen was crap.

Yes: Angel Has Fallen (where Angel is the code name for Air Force one): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1302203.

Sam Jackson already made that film, and it was awesome.

Big Game. Check it out if you like fun action flicks.

Seriously. So worth it. Doesn't take itself too seriously, but it works.

Loved it. Great action and it kept escalating more and more. That final assault on terrorist stronghold is single best action scene I've seen this year.

And islamist terrorists are modern day nazis - amazing villains that you're happy to see murdered brutally. When he did the "You can get back to Fuckistan or wherever" the whole threatre exploded with cheers and laughter. :D It helps that the translators here in Poland did really good job with subtitling one-liners. It read even better in polish that it sounded in english.

America blows up a wedding full of women and children, terrorist retaliates. At end of movie, America does the same and smiles. Great movie

Yes. Agreed 100% Loved Olympus has Fallen, hated London has Fallen.

For mediocre, but fun action movies there are tons of Statham movies worth watching. Transporter 1, Safe, Mechanic, and Parker are all fun and worth a watch (although obviously not great cinema).

Anyone that likes action should also watch the show Strike Back, which is consistently better than all of those movies.

Yeah, logic wise, it's fucking awful.

Fuckheadstan had me giving up on a awful movie and America is the only country who saves the day. Fuck you.

Glad Eckhart jumped ship for Air Force One 2017-8

It was a pile of shit. Am I correct in remembering there was no British army etc in the movie? Like London gets blown up to bits and the army, navy, special forces etc are all just chilling.

Condescending about the movie you mean?
Everyone in the room agreed that the movie was terrible after finishing it.

And even if they didn't, I still wouldn't think they are terrible people because they have a different taste in movies than me. Sometimes dumb movies can click with me, this one was offensively bad.

God I loved the exchange just prior to the final assault, when Gerard Butler is going into the building solo. The SAS character says something like "There's more than 100 terrorists in there!" to which Butler responds completely straight faced "They should've brought more men."

Such an amazingly dumb line, they didn't even attempt to be clever about it.

"Go back to Fuckheadistan or wherever it is you're from."

Awful.

But so many people said its charmingly racist and funny!!!

Even the guardian critics thought this part was hilarious. I guess as long as you're racist against the right people its funny.

Worst part is the movie isn't even much fun like the first one, imo.

They made a sequel to the wrong film. Should have made Number 10 Down or for more comedy, Buckingham Palace Down.

Its action movie logic, the greater the odds are stacked against the hero, the better chance he has winning in the end. Its why one on one battles are often life and death whereas one man taking on a group of armed baddies barricaded in their stronghold is like a walk in the park.

The only good thing about it was the lengthy one-shot action sequence near the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5Lb-osAfXo

What am I watching. Nobody is safely taking cover, just in and out of it and openly running in the street. The bad guys in the three of four story have clear lines of sight but aren't hitting anything at all. There really isn't any sense of fear or tension. It's not bad for a one shot, but it's not well directed either.
