PS4 Pro Benefits for 1080p TV Owners (general and game-specific)

How do I give it a try? I thought it was downsampling automatically? I'm playing Shadow of Mordor right now with the console on 1080p, do I have to do anything else?

I came here to ask this very thing. To take advantage of downsampling, should I change my PS4 Pro resolution to 1080p? I have a VIZIO M-Series 50" Class 4K Ultra HD Full‑Array LED Smart TV, but it doesn't have HDR. I can set my PS4 Pro resolution to 2160p and it works but I"m wondering since I don't have HDR, if I should just set it to 1080p.

Games still look good at 2160p but I think its just uprezzing right? As you can see I am sort of clueless on some of this.

This is the TV I am currently using: https://www.vizio.com/m50c1.html

I've played Dishonored 2, Watch_Dogs 2, Titanfall 2, Ratchet and Clank, and Rise of the Tomb Raider with the pro patch on my 1080p set and god damn, I think I may be spoiled on just how clean these games look now. Sharp as a knife and reminiscent of my old days playing on PC. You can probably find some jaggies if you look for them, but nothing stands out during gameplay. Impressive stuff.

I also haven't run into tearing or frame drops that I expected to from the various DF threads. Its been smooth sailing so far, though that may be because some of the games have been further patched since, like Watch_Dogs.

$400 is one hell of a premium, but if this stuff really matters to you its worth it imho. It also has me jonesing for pro patches for other games in my collection, like Warframe, and hopefully Dark Souls 3.

Random, dumb question:

I'm currently using a 1080p monitor with only one HDMI port. Do I need HDMI 2.0 cables and a 4K HDMI splitter to get the slightly better graphics?

Don't need any of that stuff, just hook up the pro to your monitor with whatever hdmi cable you have at home.

I'm sure this was answered already but, in order to get the benefits from PS4 Pro do I need to set anything up? Like i'm playing Ratchet, do I need to set anything like resolution even though I only have a 1080p set?

Some games have settings to choose from (like Tomb Raider or Infamous), others don't (like Uncharted or Ratchet & Clank)

If you set the Pro to take 4K screenshots, will they still be 4K on regular, unpatched 1080p games?
I've set them to 1080p PNG cause I still don't have many patched games (and playing on a 1080p set) but maybe I should go for 4K.

This might have been answered already, my apologies if it has. I've just got a Pro, just got King of Fighters XIV too. I've noticed that its showing in the Pro section of the store, but when I booted the game from my disc I couldn't see any options and I can't find any details of Pro upgrades online (I've only played it on a 1080p screen so far)

Forgot about this thread. Guess I'll cross post.

Playing on a calibrated 1080p monitor. The only Pro games I've tried so far are U4, TLoU, Paragon, and Infamous LL.

U4 is nice but it isn't much of an improvement.

TLoU at 60fps with the boosted image quality is incredible. I'm seriously enjoying the presentation over Uncharted 4. The carousel scene in Left Behind is stunning. Edit: IQ isn't perfect in TLoU either but the clarity 60fps provides makes up for it.

Paragon looks great as well but the game is a massive bore so I haven't seen much of it.

Infamous is still ugly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Also massive bore.

fakeedit: OH YEAH, FFXV. I'm playing the demo which has Pro support. The image quality isn't perfect but the game is gorgeous. I'm going to wait for the 60fps patch so I can hopefully get a TLoU experience. I don't reaaally believe it'll hold a solid 60 but we'll see.

If given the option I think I'm always going to go with 60fps + downsampling.

So about Uncharted 4. From what I read the only added option is 1440p/30fps. So basically, with a PS4Pro but only a 1080p tv im stuck with the base PS4 1080p/30fps version? And if so, isnt it possible to downsample like with PC games?

A bit worried about the supersampling rules.

I thought that was an automatic process for all the games that run in PRO mode with higher resolution. Something to not worry about.
But now we have three examples: Dishonored 2, for a glitch or a developer choice, doesn't downsample to 1080p.
Witness doesn't downsample but hey, there is a 1080p dedicated mode so it's fine and acceptable.
Then, AC:Syndicate.. we don't know for sure, but according to patch notes it's rendered only in 1080p and the higher native resolution is specified only for 4k users.

I'm not happy for this. I buyed my PRO only for supersampling, I was sure that was an automatic process.

I believe Elderscrolls online only offers the pro mode choices if the Pro is connected to a 4K TV.

If you are using a 1080p TV you get no pro mode choices and are forced to use the "enhanced" 1080p mode.

Given that the game isn't really all that good looking I would have liked to take advantage of super sampling.

I'm not 100% sure of this though, it's not outlined anywhere and I can't get anyone with a 4K set to confirm it for me.

You get super sampling. Also, MP was previously 900p at 60 fps on base PS4. Now it's full HD at 60 fps.

Remember super sampling is automatic with all these titles if you have a 1080p tv.

Only dishonored 2 does this weird thing where if you have a 1080p tv, it forces a 1080p render. Which is odd. And it should be patched soon. Sounds simple enough.

Man that Ratchet & Clank looks so awesome in 1080p on the Pro...

The ACS patch isn't working
It's only rendering half the resolution without checkerboarding which makes it look worse then the unpatched version for everyone.

Btw draw distance seems much improved on Pro games, even on 1080p

I'm guessing the super sampling is a go for FF15? Still downloading but I'm able to launch the game and fight in a arena/street. I've got it set to High on my Panasonic Viera VT50 and it looks amazing so far!

Three new games with downsampled absent or removed. No choice to the user.

So is this becoming a trend? 1080p Tv users what do you think? Maybe it's time to ask explanations?

Technically the only requirement for Pro is that is runs at 1080p with the same or better performance as the original. Everything else is just gravy and depends on the developer.

Witness doesn't do downsampling at 1080 either, I would figure they do a 1080 30 FPS mode.

But Witness has a very good dedicated 1080p mode, with 4xMSAA antialiasing specific for 1080p users. It's acceptable.

No excuse in the other cases.

At least the witness offers a better resolution and higher MSAA on Pro, all while retaining 60fps.

Yes, it doesn't offer 4k/30fps downscaling (or 1440p/60fps), but due to the nature of The Witness's art style, the difference even in side by sides is barely noticeable. It's the one game I can excuse for how they are handling the Pro abilities for 1080p owners.

It's straight nonsense not to allow supersampling.

I'm very annoyed by this. The main reason I bought a PS4 Pro was to improve on the terrible aliasing the original had in most games. Having a downsampled mode is no effort whatsoever for a game that already runs in 4K.

Exactly. Since it already runs at a higher resolution on the same system, it should be an option for everyone regardless of display type.

I am starting to regret my decision. I should have grabbed 2 $212 PS4s (i bought 1 for my kids) on Black friday instead of 1 Pro for $340.

Maybe the downsampling has issues. Some games like Hitman look awfully soft. But without any other perks when downsampling is gone, 1080p owners like myself are robbed.

If it keeps up, I will return the thing by Feb and go back to the Slim.

Are you sure?
Fuck that if true. I bought the Pro for downsampling

Some games have more commitment from the developer than others, fortunately 90% of the titles look and perform better on Pro. Based on comments from the developers the situation will only get better as support and familiarity with the system grows.

We're only a month in, let's not try so hard to panic.

There is no in-game option to choose anything graphically in Last Guardian, the game detects what mode your PS4 Pro is set to in the video options (1080 or 4K) then loads up in that mode. The 1080P Last Guardian stays at a constant 30FPS though where the 4K mode does dip below 30 in heavy scenes)

Thanx!
I'll wait then. Not buying or playing games that have a pro patch but no downsampling.

This is annoying to me as well. Hopefully things change.

I am playing Last Guardian on a vanilla PS4 and this is the first time I¨ve wanted a Pro to keep frame rate acceptable. It is struggling.

This (Polygon on the benefits)

It should have a steady framerate AND downsampling. No way i'm buying this game or any other game that doesn't support downsampling.
