Halo Wars: Definitive Edition releases December 20th for Ultimate Edition Preorders

Just ordered my Ultimate.

$79.99 for 2 games + Season Pass and some other stuff is not bad at all.

If you pay for the entire order with your Microsoft account balance it'll be charged immediately. If you use any other payment method for all or parts of it you'll be charged up to 10 days before the release.

Not sure if that changed recently because when I pre-ordered Titanfall 2 Digital, I wasn't charged (using MS account balance) I called them up after playing the tech test to cancel, balance was the same the entire time.

I had the physical ultimate edition pre-ordered but having Wars Definitive Edition unlock this month only for digital buyers made me switch. You got me.

Still no screenshots ~8 days out?

Yup, no screen shots, no video's as of yet. All we got was a bunch of the cut scenes made into a trailer. Really wish they would show us what the re-master looks like. Outside of visuals, I am hoping the frame rate is rock solid as the 360 version had some slowdown and screen tearing.

Whats the likelihood you'll be able to use a usb mouse & keyboard for this on X1?

Do we even know if the Xbox One version will have the option to use kb/mouse? It would be neat if they did. Like the PC version, I am hoping you can use a controller or kb/mouse.

I know they would never do this, but I kind of want an option for the original slowdown. That's when you knew the game was getting real. Normally I'm as big a graphics freak as they come, but you know, nostalgia.

Stoked to play the Remaster during the Holidays. I would like to see some screens though, but I am expecting a bit of a graphics bump and improved framerate.

I'm trying to justify an $80 preorder and I can't do it, as bad as I want this.

Usually these definitive editions cost a lot more. You get the season pass which will include new modes/maps etc. plus you get the re-master of the first game. For $80.00 to me it was a pretty good deal.

Do you have to preorder HW2 Ultimate on the Windows store, or anywhere?

You can buy codes from Amazon and CD Keys.

The codes can redeemed on XBox.com or though Windows Store. All codes are tied to Xbox/Windows Store.

Pretty weird that the game is out next week yet we have no footage or even a screenshot of the game. I don't know if that's concerning or not.

Will they seriously allow pre-orders that aren't to be paid until upto 10 days before release to download Halo Wars Definitive? I mean I hope they do as I'm one of those pre-orders.

Think I'm getting some credit for Christmas so I'll be putting it towards this.

What are the odds this will run on my Surface Pro 3?

So is the UK the only place this got delayed until February?

Halo Wars 2 comes out in February worldwide, but if you pre-order the Halo Wars 2 Ulitmate Edition, you will get access to Halo Wars 1 Definitive Edition starting December 20th.

Oooh I thought everyone was talking about Halo Wars 2 lol teaches me to post as soon as I wake up.

I take it preordering the ultimate from a store won't get you this?

Was really hoping they'd have made the warthog/pelican/etc. models the same ones as they are in Halo Wars 2, considering they're supposed to be the same. Looks like this will just be an upres?

Has to be digital. Some stores sell digital codes though.

Is Halo Wars that good? I'm really interested and after getting $45 in bing rewards money yesterday buying the ultimate Edition wouldn't be too bad.

Also have my eye on Killer Instinct definitive edition so I can really dive into that since I didn't enjoy playing it for free with pretty much all the characters locked.

Tough to decide between them.

As perhaps the biggest HW fan in this thread, no, not for most people. Don't get it just because you're a Halo fan, and don't get it if you like complicated RTSs. I never got into Halo (just played a few of the games) and never got into complicated RTSs. It's an extremely niche game, but there aren't any others like it (to my knowledge), and even if there wore, it's polished to the point that it would be one of the best anyway. They started with design constraints: runs on an Xbox 360, playable with a 360 controller, and built the entire game around that.

The menus and gameplay are simplified and streamlined to have a super-enjoyable RTS that's playable with a controller. It's one of the best menus and UIs for a console game I've ever seen. IMO, it's heavily-macro-management focused: even with all my 100+ hours of gameplay, a lot of how I play is deciding where I want which types of units to be. In the actual battles, there's not too much micro strategy. The pathfinding AI is poor, especially for tanks, but it's not too mentally taxing to organize them.

There are opportunities for micro but the game design is macro because of it being made for a controller. The micro opportunities:
picking up the shuffled supply drops (1-3 supply patterns per map, one pattern is loaded each time you play on the map), which can be done from the start of the game for almost all supplies.
Sending small squads out to harass the enemy, scout, get supplies (as mentioned), take control of small buildings on the map that give resource benefits (extra tech-tree bonus that normally costs money, healing area, or free-build site for any building you want). That last one is important because, owing to the design of the game, normally you can only build at base sites. All your units and research normally come from bases, and there's only 4 (smallest 1v1 map) to maybe 16 (largest 3v3 map) base sites per map.
Just individually managing your units, but the controller makes this tough, and it's rarely necessary, but can help, especially with the smaller and more maneuverable units (infantry)

That said, I never wanted micro in the first place. I prefer games about the big picture.

As someone that likes and play all kinds of RTSes, from C&C, to deep sims, to super micro resource blah blah etc, the reason I liked Wars so much is it embraced being an arcade-style RTS and cuts out a lot of the middleman bullshit that some of the older and/or more complicated RTSes cling to "because tradition". It's just fun to play.

Hell, if any of you remember the Microsoft Zone, I was addicted to that Ants! game for a while. That's an RTS with like, 4 units and only two different actions. It's good to have a varied pallete of RTS styles, not all of them need to be super micro apm fests

I agree with this. I've only ever really liked C&C from the RTS genre because of its easy management and accessibility. Halo Wars is very much of that ilk, perhaps easier still. But if you like an accessible, albeit shallow RTS then Halo Wars is a great time waster.

Agree with above posts. For me as well, coming from playing RTS like Dawn of war, C&C, Company of heroes, Supreme commander and other management consuming games, I find Halo Wars to be a breath of fresh air that even on its most challenging moments is still fun and interesting to play.

I'd say watch some gameplay videos on youtube and see if it spikes your interest.

Even if these are PC screen shots, they made some changes as the picture with the base, the turrets are placed totally different than they are in the regular game and it seem a bit more space in-between building as well. It looks good, but would love to see some actual game play and curious about performance on both Xbox One and PC.

Actually very excited to jump back into this, so many great moments in the past. I'm not very good online but playing co-op and customs was great fun. I only played online when my friends who are much better than me would come online, it's tough out there.

Those were pre-release screenshots shown during the marketing and release schedule of the original game. I guess they just decided to use what they had rather then taking new screenshots.
