KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

hello there, I've been skimming this thread for a while now and am an 60" KS7090 owner - should be the german equivalent to the KS8000 in the US. I've been fiddling around with the HDR-settings and noticed something very interesting: I saw that some people critisized washed out colors when turning on HDR and I have to say I had that problem too. while gaining details in dark areas when switching on HDR-mode in Ratchet and Clank, I also saw the picture getting darker and less vibrant. I now think I know a solution to this! It seems that in HDR your viewing angle matters even more. Make sure that you sit right in front of your TV and suddenly the colors pop again! And it looks BEAUTIFUL. If you have access to it, start up Ratchet and Clank in HDR, walk to a sunny place in a level and look at the furry ears of Ratchet while moving your head left and right and up/down off-centre. For me its color loses vibrance very very fast. Finally, I can get a super-nice picture when HDR-gaming, without dynamic contrast and other unwanted stuff! I would like to hear if others experienced it likewise!

TL;DR: position yourself exactly in front of your TV, don't view at an angle and HDR in games starts to pop like it is supposed to!

Unplug your TV.

Take the batteries out of the remote.

Wait a few minutes, then juice them back up.

I had this issue two nights ago, I literally wanted to punch a hole in the screen I was so pissed. Got Samsung support chat going and that was their solution. It worked.

Unfortunately that "interest based advertising" shit doesn't go away, even if you opt out. I have a damn ad on my Hub now. Really annoying.

Wow, this totally worked. On firmware 1155 with a working YouTube back button now. Appreciate it.

For anyone having problems with the back button in the YouTube app, try this.

Thank you. I'll try it.

EDIT: It worked. Thank you very much :)

Thank you for the heads up, made me turn off auto-update.
Did it have any good changes compared to 1154?

Going from 1154 to 1155 has only given me problems with YouTube. If you're doing well with 1154, I personally haven't seen any reason to update.

Took back my first panel got a 2nd that's a completely different shipment and number on the back and it's still really dark on 5 backlight without dynamic contrast and i decided i don't care it's fine, it's too dark for me i ain't returning another TV. It's not AS dark as the last panel but it's just not bright enough for me.

I find around backlight 15 with dynamic contrast on low (depending on the movie/game) is fine with me. My last panel did have pretty bad light bleed which this one doesn't so i am happy about that and i have been using this TV pretty much all day for 2 days and it hasn't what i call blinked yet which my last panel did a couple days a day.

I forgot the persons name i but i know he/she wanted an update.

I have the same thing and it doesn't feel like HDR is big of a deal as they make it. It kind of sucks, because we paid for a working HDR set but at the same time the SDK image is really great quality, so I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of exchanging a panel and potentially ending up with one that has light leaks.

Damn, just reading that out loud made me realize that that's a pretty poor customer experience.

Seeing how OLED TV's have non existent pixel response times makes me jealous. It's near instantaneous and great for video games since it has non-existent motion blur/ghosting/color smearing. Whereas the KS800 has 18ms of pixel response time average, which is actually still above average when it comes to VA panels, but nowhere near the best.

The KS8000 is the fastest TV on the market for total input-to-output response.

A few pages back I posted my dilemma with my German KS8090 (KS9000), it was somewhat DOA and an otherwise really good LCD cleaning fluid ruined it completely (take care folks, only use a dry cloth or that Monster fluid some people here recommend).
Without my knowing the store sent my TV set to Samsung, but it took them two weeks and my constant calls and nagging to approve the replacement set without even looking at it. I think they just wanted to do me a favor because it´s Christmas. The store wasn´t happy about that, but in the end they didn´t have another option.

So now I have a new set and I´m quite happy, but of course it has clouding and picture quality seems a bit worse. But not to such an extend that I could warrant another replacement. And to be honest I am very tired of that whole shit, Samsung and that damn store almost broke me. :)

But The Grand Tour in UHD and HDR brought back a big smile to my face today and after 2 weeks without a TV nearly everything looks great. ;)

BTW: Still firmware 1142 here in Germany.

Wow, even though Rtings says that copying their settings on the TV might end up with innacurate results (due to every panel being different, obviously), I did just that and the results were amazing! Whites don't look orangy anymore even with Warm 2 selected. Skin tones look noticeably better too. :)

I did the same, copied all their white balance and custom color space changes and my set looked 10x better afterwards. Not only were colors better but the overly contrasty "too bright in some areas, too dark in others" problem I was having with a lot of TV shows seeming too dark was greatly alleviated by using these settings. It may not be 100% perfect due to panel variations but it was close enough for massive improvement.

After reading your posts I did the same. Shit got better, a lot better. Thanks guys!

Update for you all..my brother in law just got done mounting the 49 inch KS8000 on my wall..the TV is PERFECT..no scratches, no dents, no cracked screen..PERFECT..I updated the TV and everything and put in the HDMI cable for our time warner cable box..two questions though..in regards to the cable box, when it got connected it asked me which time warner service we have and it had a long list(Time warner cable Beverly Hills and Time Warner Cable SD beverly hills) we were not sure which one we have so when we clicked on the first option it asked for a password, I have no idea what its talking about what password I dont have any password so we skipped it not sure what that is all about..second question has to do with the samsung account..since I plan on using the apps do I have to register to the samsung account in order to use the apps, etc..Right now Im using the WiFi with my TWC router, the signal is eh, not great but it will do for now til I get the ethernet switch..Thanks so much !!

Kinda OT, but I finally saw the KS8000 today in person at Best Buy and holy shit, that is the prettiest damn piece of technology I have ever seen. I have to have one.

A few of the demo videos on youtube looked good to me, especially the colors (e.g. this or this) but actual hdr content which hasn't been made by a manufacturer has been underwhelming so far.

HDR+ also seems like a decent enhancement for SDR content unlike dynamic contrast. I've been leaving stuff like Discovery channel and the demo 4k channel open with it enabled.

I ordered myself an UHD-player yesterday, and some movies, can't wait to see the IQ on those movies. Merry Christmas me! ;)

Check out Lucy on 4K Blu-ray to see what all the fuss is about. The picture is utterly jaw-dropping, and the HDR is immediately and consistently apparent. I watched it tonight, and found it far more impressive than The Grand Tour on Amazon Video, which is often touted as a go-to demo for HDR.

When I plug my PC into this (I even put it into the PC hdmi socket) it names the input PC - I can't enable game mode. If I remove the cable I can enable it but then when I plug it back in it turns it off. Does the PC input use game mode by default in the background as it's aware it's a PC?

Dunno, but i thought i had a similar issue once, it turned out the video wasn't actually a 4k video even though it was labeled as such. I'm fairly sure the videos in "the hdr channel" are all 4k so try checking out one of them.

I was watching the videos on "The HDR Channel" but still was getting the same results. So I'm guessing its due to my Wifi connection.

You can change that yourself by pressing the home button then Source, then pick your PC input but don't click, press up and Edit. Change that input to game console or something else and you can enable game mode then :)

Is KS9000 mostly on par with KS8000 regarding performances, especially response time and input lag on both SDR and HDR modes?

Yes it is. It has a higher peak brightness if I recall correctly according to this rtings review I own it and love it.

This is R&C in HDR mode

The Samsung KS8000 is a better buy. It is almost as good as the KS9000 on all aspect, it just doesn't get as bright. The price difference is not worth it, so buy the cheaper KS8000.

He isn't wrong, but thanks to the Samsung EPP program I was able to get this 65" set for $1475 before taxes which to me was a straight steal.

@legbone it's the 65" set and no problem. It's an awesome set. Watch Fury Road if you haven't yet. It's so beautiful.

i will do so. so the grand tour is the go to for hdr huh?

I thougt the in studio/tent shots looked great but when they were outside it seemed awful dark. maybe it was due to the fact that it was cloudy (extremely it seems) during the outside shots. i've only watched the first two episodes (and i love the show btw) so maybe i need to wait for a sunny day. i will say, the in studio shots (especially james may's blue shirt in the second episode) look amazing.

How noticible is HDR? cos i sometimes i can't tell the difference.. on this TV.
i fear there maybe something wrong or i'm just not doing something right or its just subtle?

to me it seems subtle but very noticeable (i know it sounds contradictory, but let me explain). i have done lots of research since i feel some of the hdr seems dim. well, it kind of enhances colors and lighting (or the lack of). the colors are instantly noticeable and pop amazingly. as for the lighting, this is where it is subtle to me. yeah, sunlight looks more realistic, everything looks more realistic. so if there are shadows or low light the lack of light is enhanced as well but you don't lose any details in the picture. it's like going from having your black levels set wrong to flipping the switch and getting the detail back once set properly. the amount of detail in the shadow with hdr is insane to me. so, strangely, it is immediately noticeable in some areas (color) and subtle in others (details in shadow etc). i have only had my tv about a week, and i'm still getting to know her, but i have done hours of research and i am very ocd when buying electronics. if you have a decent set you will notice it if you did a side by side with a normal range source. i know the side by side comparison is practically impossible outside of displays in electronics stores (and who knows if you can completely trust them anyway, they may sabotage the non-hdr sets in the settings). if anyone wants to correct me on anything i have said, feel free, i am still learning. but i will tell you this, i came from a top of the line samsung 1080p set that is about nine years old and starting to show its age to a ks9000 and i'm very impressed. and i am way more impressed than i was going from a good 1080p sony crt to a 1080p samsung lcd back in 2007. way, way, way more. i'm very happy with my christmas gift to myself this year to say the least (before you judge, know i am a bachelor with no one to buy for but my mother, and i took care of her this year).

I think the problem for some people is that they aren't setting their TV's up correctly i.e. Max contrast and (near)max backlight for SDR content. When you're blowing out your settings on SDR, now there's not much headroom when switching to HDR content. If people had their TVs set up correctly to have a natural looking picture in SDR, they'd see the dramatic switch to HDR.

I have two questions..as far as the picture mode..if I keep it on as "Natural" will that affect my ability to use HDR mode in games(I have not connected my PS4 PRO and XBOX ONE S yet) another question that I have is when I turn off the TV..I notice the screen just doesnt go black and turns itself off..instead you see like a cinema picture, the black comes together and then the TV turns itself off is that normal, not sure if Im describing this right Im just used to the TV just turning off

this too. a proper calibration or even just using dve disc or something like that will show you how a set should be set for standard def, or even non hdr high def. people like to run their brightness and contrast way higher than they should be (and don't get me started on sharpness).

for example, my backlight runs at 7 normally (and that may be a little too high, i've seen 5 recommended, but i have ambient light issues in my living room) and my brightness is at 43.

edit: lakerchick4life, you will get more access to different settings under movie mode but natural should not affect your ability to play hdr as long as you have the hdmi port set for hdr on that input. also, remember that when the ps4 switches to hdr on a samsung set, you have to go in and set the backlight to 20 on your own (and adjust contrast to max, and i like smart led, i think that's it, at high, leave dynamic contrast off on hdr). also, the way the tv turns itself off is normal, and really cool in my opinion.

Thank you SO much for letting me know this info..I will just keep the setting under movie mode and when I connect the PS4 PRO I will be sure to set the backlight to 20 on my own and also contrast to MAX..and dynamic contrast OFF on HDR..thanks for letting me know that the TV turning off like that is completely normal I was worried..I have my TV on with wifi and it was weird when the TV turned on this morning it still showed "Whats on" as SNL and other programs even though that was from last night but after a few minutes it updated to show what was playing today(Football, etc) I also notice that I will see little ads on the top of the screen from time to time saying "Samsung Extra" it will be a tiny box but I will notice it I guess its because they automatically add those Samsung ads when I agreed to the terms and conditions

Many sets thee days can use max contrast without clipping whites in SDR content.

Now max backlight is typically trash for SDR, needs to be set low, and is lighting dependent.

I joined the club and bought the 55 inch model today. It was on sale at best buy for $999.99, making it cheaper than the 49 inch.

To clean the KS8000 screen what do you all recommend? You barely touch it and it already has smudges/fingerprints on it..someone from samsung support said to take a microfiber cloth and put ScreenClean on it..I have from before the Monster ScreenClean I bought it from amazon will that work OK?

I can't speak for other screen cleaners, but a popular suggestion in this thread was a very soft, clean microfiber cloth with a tiny amount of water. That's what I had the best luck with when I got a few smudges on mine.
