Larry Bundy Jr: 4 Times Shigeru Miyamoto Was an Asshole

Reminds me of an excerpt from the book Console Wars that shows Miyamoto (and several other Nintendo icons) being extremely cocky. The context is that Tony Harman took it upon himself to convince Nintendo to let a Western studio develop a game using one of their iconic characters. He wrote up a short manifesto (the required ingredients to make a great game) and sent it to Nintendo. The following is when he arrives at their offices in Japan.

“He is pleased that you could fit in this visit on such short notice,” Yoko Arakawa explained to Harman, translating for her father. Although Yamauchi’s office was small, it was as intimidating as one would expect from Nintendo’s quietly ruthless leader. It was really warm in there, somewhere around eighty degrees, and Yamauchi sat there in a white undershirt, his lower half hidden behind a large wooden desk. In front of him was a pristine coffee table, a small television, and a pair of couches on either side of the room. Some of the employees at NCL referred to his office as the “realm of the Mother Brain,” making a reference to the giant, cranium-shaped, energy-sucking villain who appears at the end of Metroid. Yamauchi often had guests in and out of his office, and today was no different. In addition to hosting his daughter, his son-in-law, and Tony Harman, there as well, on either side of the desk, were Miyamoto, Yokoi, Takeda, and Sakamoto (each nobly standing upright and reluctantly sweating due to the room’s toasty temperature).

“I have read your report and found it interesting enough to pass along to Nintendo’s greatest experts,” Yamauchi said, gesturing to the videogame legends surrounding Harman. “It is their opinion that you are wrong, and that only the Japanese can make a great game.”

“With all due respect,” Harman countered, with a noticeable amount of gall in his voice, “your experts, these men here, account for most of the best developers in the world. Most, but not all, and I truly believe that with the right resources a great game could be made outside Japan.”

After the words were translated, peals of laughter permeated the room. Harman continued to make his case, highlighting key points from his paper and trying to appeal to Mr. Y.’s love of innovation, but ultimately it appeared to be no use. “Face it,” Yoko Arakawa finally said, “you’re not going to win.”

Pikmin deserves to live on in some form. It's unique gameplay hasn't even been imitated.

I honestly have no idea what the hell is up with Star Fox. It's been so weird since SF64 and its gameplay was modernized big time through Kid Icarus Uprising. I honestly wish Nintendo would stop pursuing Star Fox or give the series to Sakurai if he's still with Nintendo.
I think Miyamoto just loves the characters he created. Fox, Peppy, Falco and Slippy.

I mean I personally find the Star Fox crew pretty awesome.

So this guy is essentially the Stan Lee of Nintendo? A smiling, fun, beloved mascot for the entire company, but actually an idea-stealing prick in private?

I've never met an extremely successful person in my 42 years who either wasn't a blatant in your face kind of asshole or a closet kind of asshole.

Usually the more beloved they are publicly the more of a closet asshole they really are.

The Mario 64 argonaut story was suspicious when they said it back the and I continue to doubt it even now.

Star fox is pretty much true though. Donkey Kong Country hate was recently debunked.

A previous GAF thread on this subject: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=613206

Within the thread, PokéKong points out an interesting exchange between John Ricciardi and Dylan Cuthbert:

My fav is the one where he tries to suggest he gave Miyamoto the idea for Mario 64. (Great read tho)

@johntv yes that's a bit of a stretch, although we did 3d platforming tests while making Starfox 2

5.Is in huge part responsible for sticker star.

I like that Rare made Donkey Kong a little bitch in 2 and 3 as response to Miyamoto.

I don't doubt much of this is true or has some truth to it.

I love Miyamoto but what can I say, you look deep enough into anything you will find something you don't like. Video games are big business and Miyamoto is in the public's eye, of course some some shady things are going to go down.

I've never been able to find the source of that infamous DKC quote. I'm surprised that rumor continues to live on despite the fact that he debunked the claim himself and worked closely with Rare on the project.

Fun video, but bad blood with Dylan Cuthbert, making them never work again? Q Games has made several Nintendo exclusives in recent years...

Not really, no. Most of these claims are unfounded, and all of them are extremely one-sided.

Miyamoto has been around a long time and had a lot of interactions with a lot of people, not all of them are going to be positive. That doesn't make him a prick.

Yup. Star Fox Command and Star Fox 64 3D.

Some of the info in the video seems off. As far as I can find, DMA Design didn't go bankrupt following the cancellation of Body Harvest, and they didn't get bought by Gremlin until after GTA released.

The Mario 64 argonaut story was suspicious when they said it back the and I continue to doubt it even now.

It rests on the theory that at best Nintendo had never been planning to do a 3d Platformer with Mario until they saw this prototype. Which given they were making the N64 all about 3d is an.. odd thing to believe. Because Croc and SM64 are such different games that any starting point they shared beyond "being 3d platformers" are lost by the time the game were finished being made.

I've had a few well known bosses in the art gallery and art collecting circles that are loved by public but total assholes in their workplace to all under them so this doesn't surprise me.

And believing everything at face value is somehow better?

No one should do that. I certainly have taken no position on the validity of the accusations at this point.

But (as predicted) there are people that, on the opposite side, are very quick to dismiss any accusations without some critical thinking.

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
I can't offer any detail without getting someone into trouble, and feel free to disregard me, but I personally would not trust Dylan Cuthbert at all as a source for this information. Maybe Miyamoto is secretly a douche, I don't know, but I'd only recommend thinking so with someone credible giving that info.

While I don't buy most of these rumors.

I do believe Miyamoto is a hardass at work. Some of the employees seem to be terrified of him but also respect him.

Where's that bow gif when you need it from E3

Miyamoto being a hardass to his subordinates is pretty well documented and he himself has admitted it I believe. That said, the stuff in the videos are all really sketchy rumors that range from already debunked to not very credible

I don't think that was ever in question. That is more or less the consensus opinion from anyone that followed the Iwata Asks articles on the games where he had a significant presence on, as cutesy as they frequently tried to play off his interactions with his team members.

I think most people who have followed Nintendo over the years can come up with even more egregious missteps by Miyamoto if they can take off the rose-colored glasses. However, these sections by Bundy are quite iconoclastic as DK and Star Fox are nearest and dearest to my heart. DKC has at least experienced a magnificent renaissance but Miyamoto continues to keep Star Fox on the lower rung when it could probably be their biggest franchise.

FWIW, if it's any consolation, NathanS's post just above yours seems to contradict that section of the video, and regarding SF, as Platy and others pointed out, it wasn't necessarily Miyamoto's call. (Forgive me if I misunderstood your post, though!)

In the video, it says it's from a March 1995 issue of Electronic Games Magazine.

It's kind of clear that there's a bit of a pattern with these events. The victims are all western (European specifically) in nature. Rareware in Twycross, Argonaut in the UK, DMA in Scotland. Nintendo's never really had good western developers (Only changing in the last decade and a half with Retro and Next Level Games) and even less developers in Europe. Maybe that's one of the reasons why Nintendo failed to really catch on over there? (For certain regions, anyway. I think Germany loved Nintendo at the time, IIRC.)

I should really read more of Iwata Asks.

The only time they Mention Miyamoto was during Luigi Mansion 3DS and Majoras Mask, of the few I've read of course.

I mean, the story seems to go that both games were based both conceptually and technologically on the Yoshi prototype Argonaut were making, so without knowing that prototype and what it had in common with each, it's hard to say.

All four of these rumors are extremely sketchy at best, and honestly rather questionable, and at least one has been outright debunked years ago. Star Fox Adventures in particular is the subject of so many stories and hearsay that we still don't have any idea of what actually happened.

Based on this and other internal leaks, it really seems like Nintendo has an issue with western developers and it's an issue from the top down.

"Feeling disrespected from Nintendo's blatant white-washing of his latest creation..."

I'm sorry, what?

Pet peeve, but while Stan Lee doesn't deserve the sole credit many give him for the characters he was involved in, calling him a thief is just as wrong in the opposite direction.

Also, Stan Lee was often willing to poke fun at himself in comics he worked on as far back as the 60s at least, making out fictionalized versions of himself to be a clueless slave driver "idea guy" while romanticizing his partnered artists as underappreciated and overworked.

To bring this full circle, the reality is that Miyamoto may very well be much like Stan Lee... a visionary who gets a little too much credit by virtue of how many winning projects he was attached to, but still played a large part in reshaping an entire art (just not singlehandedly). The difference is people probably overplay Miyamoto's modesty a bit while pretending Lee is an evil glory hog.

Ok, that makes more sense.

That's the thing, I can't find the damn issue! It's in none of the archives I searched through.

It's an unscrupulous piece. For example, Star Fox 2 had EAD programmers on it and the copyrights are fully Nintendo's. Argonaut only had a co copyright on the FX technology not the individual game program for any of the games they assisted programming.
