yall it's Switch week

I know. I can't believe it's THIS FRIDAY* at 2pm*!!!

I'm getting snacks and making a big pitcher of iced coffee, and I expect to draw ire as always over my enthusiastic reactions and impassioned arguments.

*Brisbane Australia time.

Nibel joked that this thread would hit 300 pages before the 12th... It now looks like we'll probably hit 400 before then. Hot damn!

I haven't had time to check in a ton this weekend, can someone give me a short update? Anything new happen?

I will aim to have the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 OT up around twelve hours before the show starts. It'll likely be closed until an hour before it all begins however, as is usually the case with press conference threads.

No we couldn't. We would get a Skyward Sword HD, it wasn't Wii U hardware that made BoTW possible, but the desire to make an experience more similar to the first Zelda, and that just happened because of all the games that came before it.

The same can be said about Mario Kart 8.

Sure having the best gameplay and the best graphics are ideal, but no console maker provide it, even PS4 is below PC and that's how it is.

Well, the Wii U is barely even making BotW possible. What if Nintendo made Mario Kart 8 with the same graphics as Mario Kart Wii, you would be just as pleased with the game? I'm not insinuating in any way that this is your stance on the matter. I'm just curious, because a lot of Nintendo fans pull the "gameplay over graphics" card way too much. Graphics DO matter, and can have a significant effect on a game. There is no doubt in my mind that Skyward Sword "HD" would have been different in many ways (who knows if they would have played with physics back then? Larger world?). And there is also NO doubt in my mind that BotW would be a better game if it was developed with hardware equal to XBONE/PS4.

But I do realize were getting into a lot of "if's" and "would have's/be's" here. It's frustrating to be a Nintendo fan at times. I've imagined many times what games we could have had if Nintendo didn't "pause" at the PS2/PS3 generational leap.

I look forward to it!

Any idea on what the title will be yet?

Maturity, bitches.
If you find box art for Splatoon and Mario Kart that doesn't look all that different from the Wii U's you can easily assume they're fake. No way they'd use a design that screams "this is exactly the same content".

Nikkei projected a 25000¥ price

We're talking about cases now?

Personally, I think it's time this form factor returns:

Just a little smaller and a little thinner.

I actually really like and prefer the Japanese Gamecube cases. Smaller than the usual, bigger than 3DS.

That's actually a really good design. They're large enough to be a significant presence on a shelf but small enough to make sense for a tiny cartridge. I'm moving my hope for the box design onto this.

Have any credible rumors mentioned an achievement system? I'd like something like Mario Run's My Nintendo challenges but with harder to get ones like collecting all of the black coins.

Fantastic game, sure. Imagine the same game running with the SM3DW engine.

You can go all the day like this.

Imagine Horizon with more ram, a way beefier GPU and CPU, it would look NUTS!!

We get that games can look better, but looking better doesn't make a game good.

Graphics are important, but they go way beyond just looking like real life.

Of course you could say "Yeah, imagine what OoT would look like if it were made in 2020!", but that's not the point. The hardware needed to produce those graphics was affordable and standard back then. Today, the hardware needed to run Horizon is affordable and standard (even the Pro version rendering 2160p checkerboard - and a better looking game than that is hard to come by today).

This guy was right on a lot of his stuff, one being Rabbits x Yoshi even tho we know it as Rabbits x Mario.

But the one thing that I hope he was right on is Splinter Cell coming, that would be a big bomb shell if the new Splinter Cell is announced on Switch first.

I would thing his Ubisoft source would be the same person

Splinter Cell is such a great series, so yeah, that would be incredible!

But can that hardware be fit into a tablet and sold at a reasonable price while also running off a battery?

Some people seem to forget that. Yeah Nintendo is marketing this as a console but the entire system is housed in a device even smaller than an iPad. That is quite impressive. Of course Switch can't meet PS4 Pro graphical fidelity, it's less than 1/10th the size of it.

I'd like a reminder in the OT that Nintendo typically will have a big media release after the presentation and they're likely not going to have time to show every single game coming to their system in their presentation, let alone trailers. Also I think there's a decent chance they may hold some third party announcements for the media briefings in the US/Europe.

This is not what he is saying

The interpretations here really throw me off. I read that statement from Bioware and took it as being a bit sarcastic. IE: If there's an insane amount of demand for the Switch, we'll port it. I don't personally think we'll see it come to Switch at all.

They're talking about having multiple consoles, not that they think the Switch will have all of those games.

I see. I misread the post in that case.

I am in total agreement with the poster anyway. I own all the consoles and will be getting Switch on launch day as well. It's the only way to roll.

Fantastic game, sure. Imagine the same game running with the SM3DW engine.

We'll have to eventually agree to disagree from here.
I'll choose Twilight Princess as example: Had the Wii, as you said before, not been Nintendo 'pausing', it would've looked pretty much exactly like the HD remaster of 2016.
And I think it's very fair to say that the opinion of quite a margin within Nintendo-GAF would not praise this game that much more or find it any less unappealing for other than purely technical reasons.
I for sure don't like the remaster that much more than the original, it's still just a great game.
I don't doubt for one second that you just feel different about that, and that's absolutely fine of course. But on a grander scale, I'd even argue that rather more of total actual consumers see it my way, but that would be totally worth discussing in a well-managed, separate thread on general gaming.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
On the third day of Switchmas
GAF gave to me.....
Any new leaks?

We're all waiting for the upcoming Obe1's video of Switchmas.

I just want to see what other boring "leak" he can think about while selling it as a huuuuge scoop

I just noticed that people are seriously trying to make arguments about Zelda? I don't understand the notion that Nintendo's first-party developers are prisoners of weak technology who really want to make BoTW look like the Witcher 3. If Nintendo's own studios were really struggling that much with their technology, we wouldn't see consoles like Wii/Wii-U/Switch. They had a hard enough time pumping out HD games for the Wii-U...

That's good, I will definitely have a reminder like that. Thank you.

Japanese GC cases are a good shout, though the cardboard slipovers probably wouldn't happen today, and the secondary cover-art relies on there being a paper manual included. Both of which are really important in making the case standout.

I wouldn't mind cases around the size of the JPN GC cases, but with some sort of special adornment. For instance, the Xbox One cases are actually imprinted with the Xbox One logo for the upper banner, instead of having it printed onto the paper sleeve itself:

You can see it at the top here:

And through the other side of the case at the top left here:

I figured people would have learned after Wind Waker was announced that Nintendo has no interest in pursuing hyper-realistic graphics. But here we are seventeen years later and people are comparing bullshots of a game made to look super realistic with an unflattering shot of actual gameplay of a cartoony stylized game.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
With regards to the countdown in the OP is it accurate?

Meaning is the Japanese Switch presentation gonna be 11 PM ET/ 8 PM PT on Thursday night?

LOL yea this guy is something else.

No, but I predict an influx of juniors bashing graphics.
Yup I can see this happening.
Most exciting thing I've seen recently is the now site redesign which I'm hoping is an indication of the Switch UI. It looks really nice.
Nice will go check it out.
