I just woke up to all the Switch details and am blown away. Unless they bring down the price to $200 quickly, this thing will make the Wii U look like a success. Since the Wii U came out, Nintendo has lost mind share and the market continues to be saturated with entertainment options. There is no reason for most of the public to even give this attention.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch is given one tiny section in most retailers and then that is eventually removed by 2018.

This. Other launch lineups this generation have included such classic titles as Knack and Ryse: Sone of Rome. The launch lineup isn't the problem, the problem is that there's jack shit for the rest of the year. They needed to show me that they have indie devs on board with this thing and they didn't

Don't we have Splatoon, Mario and Mario Kart and Xenoblade slated for this year?

Worldwide launch = it's going to be hell to get it.
Well I guess people are used to that with Nintendo, haha.
Nintendo really live in their world, they will fall hard

They already did, it's called Wii U.
"Getting the casual crowd back", with those prices it's already impossible :lol

What is going on with this post?

Such negativity.

Thing is, ps4 and xbox had big support from third party and despite having cross gen titles, people were desperate to upgrade from the long ps3/360 cycle. People can buy a next gen ps4 and xbox and trust that the third party games will come

I loved my ps4 for the faster UI, share feature, MP games, and that library ramped up real quick. I was just happy to move on

People are criticizing Nintendo for the price, specs, battery, controller, accessories, etc.

I find it really strange that they have to advertise and sell a traditional controller because that should really be included in the box. That kind of stuff adds up to traditional gamers who are now having to factor in online fees and a controller like that

I cant help but think that they could have designed the default controller to feel better and less box-like. maybe thats not possible, but im really curious about how it handles

$400 in Canada lol.

From what was shown of the tech itself and the prices, I'm really interested in how all this will play out.

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen but who knows.

What's my issue? I don't have one. Don't understand where I conveyed that I have an issue. I'm simply trying to understand the mindset of someone ready to shell out $250 because "that's where it needed to be" price wise. Instead it's $50 more. I don't see how that is a back breaking difference. Obviously if it was another $100, $150, or $200 more I'd get it. But a difference of $50 being some arbitrary cutoff doesn't seem to be a huge difference.

I get it. $250 would have been better. But it's not like we thought $250 and they destroyed us with $399 or something. I know people have different incomes. But if you can't afford another $50 by launch, wait a few weeks or months until you get it. Instead I've seen people in several threads claiming that they would have made an instabuy at $250 and now they won't buy it at a $299 price point. I'm not defending Nintendo, just surprised by such a huge backlash over $50.

It's because it's 50 dollars more for something worse than we were expecting. I would have had no problem with 300 if it had free online, reasonably priced accessories and Zelda ran at 1080p. But as it is the deal just got a whole lot worse, and the extra 50 bucks is just a small part of that.

That's the whiplash in reaction you're seeing.

Ahaha yeah
But I meant "fall hard [from their expectations with Switch's sales]"

Because we all determine what something is worth paying for. You seriously mean to tell me that there isn't some arbitrary cutoff point where you wouldn't buy a Switch? If it were $700 would you buy it? What about $650? And when you figure that out, think about what the price difference is between what you are willing and not willing to pay.

So I don't get why it's so hard to understand that people value the Switch at $250 and Nintendo asking for more than that means they won't buy the Switch. It doesn't matter that it's just a $50 difference. It only matters that it's more than people think the console is worth.

Did you see where I said that if it was another $100 I'd "get it." I should clarify that I meant that I would understand. So no, obviously I wouldn't pay $700 for the console.

People have principles. I get it. "I'm not paying over $250."

But there is legit outrage over this. Meltdowns in the announcement thread. That is what I don't get. People that are tuning into a conference and posting about it as it happens. A lot of them huge fans of Nintendo. Ready with their $249. But at $299? No way. Rage. Horror. It's unbelievable!

My surprise is that some diehards are so putoff by the price. Mom walking through the store and being appalled by the price tag, I get it. The casual gamer that might have made an impulse buy? Ok. But for me, the intense outrage over $50 for the people following this so closely...yeah I guess it surprised me. I expected some backlash, but not the extent of it that I've seen. Especially in the presentation thread.

We aren't going to see eye to eye on this. I'm not trying to offend you or anyone else. I guess if it were me and I was so hyped up and ready to buy it at $250, I'd still give in at $300.

The bigger surprise for me is the overpriced accessories. I think that is the more justified outrage. Or lack of launch titles.

At $400CDN I can't see it flying off the shelves. I think they missed their sweet spot by $100, but certainly $349 would be a number people might consider. All IMO of course.

PS4 with Uncharted was selling for $299 Christmas time.

I don't buy a lot of new games these days but even for me "one good game every 3 to 4 months" sounds a hell of a lot like my experience with the WiiU

Yeah, I guess they need to show more on E3 or something. Though I doubt they would have games for this holiday considering they showed us Mario already.

Having not really spent a huge amount of time with a Nintendo console since the N64 (other than brief time with the Wii and some first party Nintendo stuff), I was really hoping to jump in early with this one and see what I've been missing.

Really unsure now.

Everyone forgot that the Gamecube was more powerful and cheaper by 100$ than the PS2 during launch, but that did not help it.

Stop saying that price and power determines a console's success.

You're absolutely right. A strong lineup of both first party and third party games determines a console's success, which Switch clearly won't have either.

The 300$ price tag doesn't bother me. I didn't fall for the leakers claim of 249$.

The only thing that's kicking me in the balls is the annual online fee. I hate that shit. I stopped paying for PSN this past August because of how stupid I felt the service was.

To a lesser extant the prices for accessories ie Pro Controller and Joy Cons are fucking rediculous. Those prices are telling me that Nintendo is being arogant about this product and in my opinion they haven't earn the right to be arogant. I just won't buy any of these.

Its walking into an even worse situation than the GC and Wii U, to think that it would do better than either of them is folly.

Releasing after the holidays, more expensive than the competition, stronger competition than ever, with an incredibly weak lineup and 3rd party being cautious from the get go.

Nintendo, with their middle of the road strategy, instead of merging two of their pillars into a single stronger one, is likely to shatter both of them in the process.

It doesn't help that some of the new games are Wii U ports.

It seems like E3 will be really important for Nintendo, says a nervous gaffer for the 3rd year in a row.

Liam R needs to answer why he called that last 4chan leak fake. He even went back and said some of it was true, when it was all fucking true.

It's time to bury him with supermetaldave

I think the biggest issue I have is not the price. I gladly paid $399 for PSVR and that had even fewer games I was interested in playing. It's also far less convenient to play. It also was not a stand alone device and I likely will never touch the headset again as well.

But it genuinely offered a new experience. Even though the Switch is a hundred dollars less, is a complete stand alone system, comes with two controllers, and will be supported by my favorite developer (Nintendo) I still feel like it confers the same exact gameplay experience as the Wii and Wii U did - except you can take it with you this time.

If Nintendo recognized the fact that their hardware was not truly new conceptually and priced it and accessories accordingly as a budget-friendly family option, I would see the value here. But as it is, 300 is a premium price for taking the same experiences we've been having for the past +10 years (especially without backward compatibility) on the go.

More game reveals like Mario, Zelda and Xenoblade 2 would have helped a ton. But considering how sparse that first year looks, I'm going to need to wait and see.

I don't think hardware is a problem and I think that things like storage are only marginal problems. Those are all things message board enthusiasts care about. The two main issues are that its out of impulse buy range for this sort of thing and the 2017 lineup is really anemic, and software drives hardware. All the time. Every time

They really need 1 2 Switch to be another Wii Sports

Seeing the Euro prices, I just realized how incredibly stupid the pricings are.

80 fucking Euro for the Pro controller? Do Nintendo live in a world where there is no Xbox Elite / Scuff etc. controller as the top tier? You could get the former for below 100€ multiple times already and I'm almost confident that the Pro controller won't hold a candle to it. Geez

Looks like I'm missing another Nintendo launch. Not enough here to justify getting one at launch (only thing I'm remotely interested in is on a system I already have) and that holds true for a considerable amount of time after launch. Not enough announced yet to justify the WiiU drought IMO. Did I miss something, what is Retro doing? Really was hoping to see a Nintendo IP that hasn't been on console for a while. My opinion on Nintendo hasn't really changed since before the conference, which is pretty disappointing.

Also, man fuck off @ that dragon quest announcement, geez.

GameCube and ps2 are apples and oranges since they don't have the same 3rd party support. A more apt comparison is XB1 and PS4 and the ps4's cheaper price and slightly better performance gave it quite the edge, but there were obviously many other reasons as well.

That's pretty horrible man. I don't think most can relate to this.

Even worse. PS4 was $250 with Uncharted during the Holiday. I'm sure that Sony will make the $250 price official at some point this year (maybe $200 for Black Friday??). It's going to be a rough Holiday for Nintendo, especially if they wanted the casual market back.

If this is the best value they can offer I actually dont get why they went hybrid. At that price they ccould have made a cheaper better handheld or console.

The price is the only "problem" i was expecting 250 Euros and it is 330 which is a quite bit more, but maybe they could not have gone cheaper sine its a pretty capable handheld.

Also i'm not sure about the new mario, it just looks weird but then again i'm glad they keep "changing " the formula so every 3D instalment is a fresh game but i will try to get it on launch if possible.

I'll put it in the pesrspective I see, for myself - value wise:

The 3DS was $249, at launch. Since then, the system had a significant price drop and phenomenal library of games. However, the big seller for that line up was a sku called XL which was increased pricing and now retailing for $199.

Originally $249 = $50 dollars less than Switch, while switch can do a lot more + not 240p (will miss 3D).

PSVita launched at $249, with no memory for games. A very capable handheld, but only $50 dollars less than Switch.

So switchnis like a Vita + 16 gig memory original price.

I'm cool with that.

Switch is taking Nintendos home systems and portable ecosystem, consolidating into one which will lead to just one system costing less than the major consoles and more than current portables.

It's a fine in between, $100 less than the PS4/Xbox -
$100.00 more than 3DS XL.

I have been more of a handheld fan than consoles, beginning in Vita/3DS era. I've been gaming since I was a kid in the 80's when OG NES was new and on shelves. But this was first time I really got into handhelds and 3DS' 3D + Resident Evil, is what drew me in.

Ultimately, having spent much time with 3DS and reading GAF bitch about the systems great games but shitty 240p costing what it does, today - the switch is like what every handheld gamer would want + but being a bit pricier to have the ability to play on TV and not hand cramps control options from the get go.

I'm sold.

Even worse. PS4 was $250 with Uncharted during the Holiday. I'm sure that Sony will make the $250 price official at some point this year (maybe $200 for Black Friday??). It's going to be a rough Holiday for Nintendo, especially if they wanted the casual market back.

I would buy a PS4 today at $200CAD and i probably wouldnt even play it.

Amazing price given what we are getting. I'm currently sitting outside a GameStop waiting to preorder

...it's not though?

You could think that the price is worth what you're getting, I wouldn't fault anyone for that. But to act like Nintendo is doing you a favor with the value of this thing is just straight up delusional.

But I suppose some people will fawn over every choice Nintendo makes, no matter how baffling. Every console has that crowd, unfortunately.
