The nice thing about the dock and joycons is it will be pretty easy for them to put out a new, more powerful version of the tablet itself in the future and upgrade without needing all new peripherals.

I think there's a lot of short term opinions about this thing being thrown around but it feels like Nintendo won't have to do a major new hardware launch for a long time. This switch platform can be upgraded and adapted in a lot of ways in the future.

That Prototype image of the WII U Pad few years back looks kinda familiar.

$100 Android tablet with Mario Run is the lamest counter argument I've seen. So does the switch compete with PS4 or $100 tablets?

Part of the problem here is that, because of its unique ability to be both a home console and a portable, it competes with both. It will be compared to both simply because it can.

The fact is, a $100 Android tablet can run thousands of games. Just about all of them won't have the polish of Nintendo software, true, but they'll be enough for a casual audience.

Just a few years ago, I saw kids and teens carrying around DS and PSP...3DS and the odd Vita here and there. Nowadays I'm the only one in my vicinity carrying any of that stuff around. Just about every kid I see with an electronic device now is toting around a phone or tablet, probably a cheapo Android or a hand-me-down from their parents. And I find that to be a bit sad. But that is what casual gaming has become. Casuals don't seek out consoles nearly as much as they used to, and dedicated portables? All but dead in the US, as far as I can tell.

From what I see: the gaming audience nowadays consists, by and large, of two groups: the group on tablets and phones, and the group of hardcore gamers (us included). IMO Switch at $300 with no pack-in games is a device that does a poor job at attracting either group. And then we have the Nintendo uber-fans who will buy it at any price. Wii U is proof that this group is not enough to make Switch a success.

It's not like I want the Switch to be a failure, or for Nintendo to have to go 3rd party. But just like Super Mario Run, Switch feels to me like a continuation of Nintendo's difficulty with observing market conditions and pricing their products accordingly.

I guess my perspective is slanted, because I bought a Wii for my kids, I skipped Wii U and the Switch interests me personally.

I'm the opposite. I bought Wii U and own most of the "big" games, so the new versions for Switch don't interest me as much. I don't yet have kids, but plan to over the next few years, and of course I've considered the possibility of playing Nintendo games with my future children.

But here is where it gets sticky. I (like many) have several Wii Remotes lying around, and was pretty happy when I realized that they'd all work with Wii U. This made local multiplayer seem cheap on Wii U. Plus, I'm sure many of us are aware of the refurb controllers and other products Nintendo has been selling at deep discounts from their own Web site. They're as good as new and way cheaper. 2 years back, I got a pretty blue Wii Remote Plus + Nunchuk for $20.

Now I look at the asking price for extra JoyCons and blink in confusion. I realize that refurbs could go for cheaper later, but that's not yet guaranteed, and the sticker shock is strong right now. I watched the presentation and hear "HD rumble" and wonder if that's why these tiny controllers are so expensive, and if so, I wonder if Nintendo has their priorities straight. My XB1 and PS4 controllers are highly advanced pieces of tech, and I've never paid more than $40 for any of them (thank you, Black Friday sales).

Do you kind of see why I'm shaking my head at Nintendo right now? I mean, I'm part of Nintendo's target audience here...I own or have owned just about every console from Sega, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft since the NES. I bought the Wii and Wii U within their launch windows, and the 3DS shortly after the emergency price drop. I even really like the idea of a portable with the power of a home console (although I really would like for it to be smaller). But I am thoroughly uninterested in the Switch with this launch lineup at $300.

Maybe this wall of text helps to explain why I'm saying what I've been saying.

Great, it's gonna be the black New Nintendo 3ds experience all over again trying to get ahold of one of these things.

I can only F5 so much before I miss a preorder restock. X(

Joycons are apparently more expensive that we probably thought (and that rumble tech sounds like a factor) but being portable + the screen and the usual nintendo fuckload of plastic parts in the pack add up.

It remains to be seen if nintendo changed the price because of the hype like they did with the Wii, but like the Wii this thing probably costs more to make than people want to believe anyway.

Just pre-order the grey sku and the red and blue joy-cons.

Well a Shield TV costs 200 bucks, and that is straight from the manufacturer/owner of the chipset. Very rough theorizing, but it's pretty easy to see where the additional 100 dollars comes. Contracts for the chipset, screen, joycons, battery, dock, additional storage, grip, plus R&D to get everything in the tablet form factor. These are all additional costs over the Shield TV. It makes sense really, I think. I was dreaming of 250, but after the new revision of the Shield TV was announced at 200 last week with only 16GB of storage, the writing was on the wall, IMO. There was no way Nintendo could add as much as they are adding and only price it 50 dollars above that product (or even the same), but that's obviously my speculation. No technical knowledge on the subject.

This is of course assuming the X1 chip that's in the Shield TV is the basis of what is powering the Switch. If that's the case, Nintendo hasn't just fit the Wii U in the Switch. They've fit something way above it.

Is it generally frowned upon to make agressive advertisements nowadays? If console and handheld platforms are struggling why not promote the strengths of the systems compared to competetors like they use to in the 90s?

I for the life of me don't get how they have let the ipad gaming experience become so strong. Yeah there are 1000s of games many free, but they are almost all completely shitty experiences, with their only strengths which could be considered negatives, tapping into base human desires of gratification; pay to win, grind, join clans be the best.

I've mentiones it before but I lost my wife to these god awful games, my children actually prefer the console and handheld experience to ipad because much more quality goes into them.

My wife tells me she knows the experiences are garbage compared to console games but that she can do everything on one machine influences her, meanwhile she sitting there grinding on a game with no music, no story, literally just making number values go up by pressing a button.

Its really stupid when you take a step back and look at the mobile game experience, if they would highlight how much better these experiences are on focused machines I wonder if that would help.

Looks like Wi U Turbo EX Plus Alpha to me. I must admit thats fine to me as graphics have been fine since PS2 in my book but 300 coin for rumble? cause I can't see anything else costing that much.

Am i the only one that hated the neon colors during the unveilling, but the more i look at them on impression videos on youtube, the more they grow on me? Now im conflicted on which sku im pre-ordering..
Nah, I feel kinda the same way.

I generally hate bright system colors, the original 3DS XLs in America were only available in Blue and Red which I hated. I waited ages for a new color, but settled for blue eventually.

But seeing more of the neon joycons the more more I like them.

I'm still sticking with my Grey Amazon pre-order, but eventually I'll get some colorful extra joycons. I even might wait a while and see what other colors they come out with in the future.

The more I think about the more disappointed I get with Nintendo. I really want a secondary console, specifically Nintendo lol. But fuck, I have zero need for all the gimmicky bullshit and the hybrid stuff.

I just want a box that sits next to my Xbox one that I can play Mario and Zelda on lol. Why can't take the damn dock and put the tablet internals in it lol and sell it for $250 with a pro controller.

That all I want Nintendo.

Everytime i get uppity in my head about the price i realize this a console that turns into a handheld and goes with me anywhere.

I agree the price feels high. Buying the system and zelda day 1 shouldnt destroy my wallet tho.

Only if you're importing, though.

The Switch is ~32,400 yen with tax (exactly the same price as a PS4).
As an average Japan-based consumer, that doesn't feel particularly cheap; you can't judge the perceived price of an item for a given population simply by looking at the exchange rate.
You Canadians have more disposable income than equivalent Japanese consumers, so the impact of a 32,000 purchase on a household here will be greater than a CAD 370 purchase would be for you.

The Switch costs $452 CAD after taxes.

Was just curious if there has been any word on what games this hori pad will work with? On launch I'm not sure if I want to shell out another 70 for the pro controller, but I would be fine with this pad if it really goes for 30. Or were these fakes or something?

Wow didn't expect the US to dominate views to that degree. Seems like 80+% of the total.

Well sure except the Shield TV doesn't have anywhere near Nintendo's volume and has no software revenue and doesn't have anywhere near Nintendo's retail distribution so basically nothing about the economics should be the same.

Really odd they didn't mention Smash... are they not porting it after all?

Why cant it be a 2018 port?

Why does everyone expect every game this very year?

Maybe the system will be around longer than 9 months and a smash port next year isnt going to sell launch units.

Or maybe they arent porting but thats doubtful.

Which is why it is insane to me that Nintendo doesn't strengthen up NOA and have them have a bigger input into how they shape their future. Most of their sales are from America, but NCL just does whatever they want and hope Westerners like it.

Has anyone run the math on how much switch costs when all hidden costs are factored in? (online play, carry case, controller, mem card, etc)

because most of its games are ports...

Everytime i get uppity in my head about the price i realize this a console that turns into a handheld and goes with me anywhere.

I agree the price feels high. Buying the system and zelda day 1 shouldnt destroy my wallet tho.

Right now that is a very limited use case. The reality is that just means you can play the same Zelda game at home and away. However, if you expand your scope a bit you can get much greater value. You can get a dedicated home console in the XB1 or PS4 which already have a ton of discounted games, and buy mobile games for your phone, or listen to podcasts, or watch movies/TV shows, or use social medial, or... You get the point.

If you absolutely have to play Zelda on the road then that doesn't work for you, but for most people would more than be adequate. In return they'd get a more powerful home console that had access to more third party AAA software. So you'd just be trading a more powerful gaming experience on the road for a more powerful gaming experience at home.

Has anyone found a pre-order for the red and blue joycon controller pack (for the United States.)

Gamestop has the pack with one pack blue or one pack red, but not the left red joycon and right blue joycon.

Every other store I see online lists it as unavailable.

Was just curious if there has been any word on what games this hori pad will work with? On launch I'm not sure if I want to shell out another 70 for the pro controller, but I would be fine with this pad if it really goes for 30. Or were these fakes or something?

oh that's interesting - hope its real. I wouldn't pay $80 for the official pro controller, but hori stuff is generally decent.

Has anything been said about the eshop?
Can I go fully digital on this with an SD card, and will they still charge me the same as the physical release?

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
I tried looking for some info but couldn't find any on this but just a quickie questions.

Will the Switch have a web browser and/or apps like Amazon Instant Prime? I heard it might not have Netflix but haven't heard anything about apps or web browsing.

Also will it have a camera?

I'm seriously thinking of saving up money to buy this but I need more info.

It's probably going to let you download those apps through the eshop like the other consoles.

The Nintendo event was in the middle of the night in Europe, the local departments started uploading the videos hours later then the event and hours after North-America uploaded the videos.

I watched all the videos on the US account, and I know most people did the same.

Well if you want any sort of "accessory" you're fucked on top of an already expensive console.
In my case, ideally I would have wanted an extra dock and controller, and a charging grip. That would cost me around 600€. I would have been ready to spend around 400-450 max, so.
I didn't even include a memory card (25€ for 64GB,50€ for 128GB), a case (30€) or take online play sub into consideration.

Is that Hori pad really supposed to be 30$? I'd be in at that price. Have an old Hori controller from Pokken Tournament and it's pretty good quality.

Actually... speaking of that, curious to see if we end up getting Pokken with the DLC on switch.

Probably, they keep adding Pokemon to the arcade version with no Wii U DLC in sight. There were rumors about upcoming DLC for Mario Kart and Pokken Tournament, which turned out to be true when Animal Crossing got it's DLC updates the rumor said it would.

My guess is that they moved the DLC over to Super Mario 8 Deluxe in order to sell it as a complete game and will do the same with Pokken.
