Do you guys think there will be a Switch shortage?

It's a Nintendo console, of course it'll be sold out in seconds and it'll take months for Nintendo to realise they need to make more units!

Hard to say what stock will be on launch, but you bet retail stock on systems not preordered will be gone the first day.

Preorders are already going for at least $400 in completed auctions.

Not to mention the Zelda Master's Edition that is going for average right now of about $350 or so in completed auctions. Hell, even the Zelda Special Edition is going for around $200.

I'm kinda pissed that GameStop never had Master's Edition preorders available in store on Friday. It was just Standard and Special Editions.

Gonna cross my fingers and hope I can score a Master's Edition in store at opening. Gonna guess GameStop is gonna be my best chance for that.

Just put me on a fucking list, even if it's 2 weeks later, it's a pre-order! Not a guarantee that i have it day 1.

How Nintendo handles supply and demand

Head of Sales: "So we have about 30,000 pre-order for the Nintendo Switch, sir."

Nintendo: "Excellent! Let's ship 20,000!"

Head of Sales: "But... there's 30,000 pre-orders... shouldn't we ship like 45,000?"

Nintendo: "Nope! ship 18,000!"

Head of Sales: "what the fuck.."

This reads like: let's give the illusion the machine captured the Wii' lightning in a bottle again by under shipping the console and in return when it sells out people will want it more cause everyone must have it.

There's some negative points to this so I don't think Nintendo is doing that. More likely they're just being cautious.

80% sure it will be pre-order only availability. I'm shocked that they are releasing early March instead of late March. That means they feel good about their supply chain or they just don't care. The console is obviously coming in hot since online features won't come online until late 2017 and launch software is thin (Wii U ports aren't even ready).

My plan is to go my favorite retailer on launch day and purchase a Switch + Legend of Zelda. If they are sold out, then I will buy Legend of Zelda for Wii U.

I've gotten a GCN (Walmart), Xbox 360 (Circuit City), Wii (Target), and Xbox One (Microsoft Store) at launch without a pre-order so we'll see if the tradition continues. I did not buy the Wii U at launch and waited for MK8 bundle. If I don't get a Switch at launch I'll probably wait for a Super Mario Odyssey bundle.

The only reason I get consoles at launch is because I enjoy the "hunt."

Of course.

I'm buying a switch just so I can play zelda...then I'll sell it a few weeks later and profit probably 100 bucks.

It's early march because march is the last month before their fiscal year ends and thats when they reveal profits/loss revenue.

I bet they would have released it in the holidays if they could but with investors not being happy with the wii u situation for years they can only delay a new hardware release for so long.

I preordered a PS4 a couple of days after the E3 conference. I'm surprised the Switch was unavailable the next day. I guess Nintendo gonna Nintendo

Initially yes, probably. Won't be like the Wii.

I preordered on Amazon just in case I wanted one come March, if I don't I'll just cancel before they charge me.

Only if Nintendo pull their usual "limit supply to create demand" tricks. Otherwise, no fuckin way Bob, its way too overpriced for what it is.

Yea... the hardware looks so good. Although I was down on it due to the weak presentation and launch lineup, I think it's going to be huge just based on how nice the hardware is.

As a Neat Thingie, Switch soars.

That doesn't play with everyone but I am not above it.

How they haven't been called out on this shit is beyond me.
What was the last console they didn't pull this idiocy with?

Master editions really going for that much at auction? God damn. Ebay allows preorder items?

Pretty sure they made a crap ton of Wii U's and they were easily available during the holiday system. Believe they made too many and it took a while to sell out everything.

At the very least I think it will do reasonably well (40+ million). In contrast to the Wii U, Nintendo is doing an excellent job of communicating what this console is to consumers, and the Switch's gimmick is much more appealing than the Wii U's. It's going to be Nintendo's primary focus, so it will presumably have at least one entry from their biggest franchises, including Pokemon, which is clearly a huge deal considering how well Sun and Moon did, and their effect on the 3DS' holiday sales.

I'm curious to see how much Japanese 3DS developers embrace the Switch, as that could be a huge factor in its success. At the very least it's getting a new SMT game, but that could have been planned for consoles even prior to the Switch.

With all that being said, I think Nintendo should drop the price to $250 and possibly bundle 1 2 Switch with it ASAP to make the package more attractive to a wider audience if they really want the Switch to be successful (and I'm saying that as someone that's getting one at launch). And I know that controllers don't typically get permanent price drops, but I think those should also drop at least $10 in price as the costs to manufacture them decrease.

The thing is though, are Nintendo purposely restricting supply or have retailers under ordered?

Wouldn't Nintendo want to sell as many as they can initially when the buzz is high at launch and wouldn't retailers want to cash in also due to launch buzz?

If a youngster goes into a store with mom/dad wanting one and is unable to, by the time it is available the buzz and interest could have already died down, this is also the case for non-youngsters pushing them into the wait and see category.

Yes, but only during launch. Once the Nintendo diehards have their consoles no one else will buy it.

Yes once the diehards fans have their consoles and take it to Starbucks to play MK battle mode tournaments... I am pretty sure no-one will want to join then

I find this frankly repulsive.

Why is this repulsive? Do you live in the US? Because, in case you were born yesterday, welcome to Capitalism. I frankly don't like seeing this woman's photo being mocked. Sure scalpers suck or whatever but she and whoever took the photo were only doing what we all do, tryin' to get paid!

When I explained scalping to my nephew yesterday and told him how scalpers are despised by gamers, he was puzzled, his response was "There are so many other ways and professions that people make money from which are far more harmful and damaging to people and the world, and nobody bats an eye at those."

Wont sell out here (Aus). I imagine if they ship 600k+ in the US (out of 2 million worldwide) its not gonna be sold out there either.

Haha, I'm not familiar with that reference/meme. But anyway my nephew is too old to be a "boy", he's in his 30s*, and not a particularly bright individual if he wasn't familiar with scalping at that age :p

*
which should make me old enough to be a grandpa I suppose :(
