No Netflix on the Switch according to Bussiness Insider

The last ten years have shown Nintendo is going to fuck up every aspect of their consoles other than their exclusive first party games (and even that is questionable at times).

This shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

If you feel okay buying a Nintendo console to play just Nintendo games then buy it. If you don't, the console isn't for you.

It sucks but that's the reality. If the Wii U flop doesn't change their minds nothing will.

People already own consoles. The stick is extra, not the other way around.

Yep. Nintendo is basically saying they don't want to even try to become someone's primary entertainment device, which is baffling when you're coming off the heels of your worst-selling system ever.

It doesn't have 4k output anyway, so no big deal here. Anyone who buys a new TV these days would want 4k and HDR on it.
Without these 2 specs included in the switch, there is no real motive to include Netflix or any other high end streaming service.

The more I read about the Switch launch the more I believe that N didn't want (as is not ready) to launch the Switch in this fiscal year, but the WiiU situation forced their hand.

Those missing basic features are as bad as the PS3 launch, without the basic background download "feature"... Another rushed launch, in this case forced by the X360 succes.

I believe N wanted to launch Zelda BotW last december for the WiiU and launch the Switch in 2018 holidays/fall, with the Mario Odissey as a launch title along with 1-2, Spla2oon, MK8dx, a Zelda "remake", a possible Smash4 remake and "much better" 3rd party support, but the WiiU situation was too bad for them to keep this schedule.

Im curious, can you stream Netflix at 4K on your network?

The stick also has many other viewer apps that the Switch and other consoles will never have. I have a Roku stick, that has all my TV viewing apps like Netflix, Time Warner cable app, Plex client and others.

I would never use a game console or handheld for that stuff. Plus with viewing apps on other device, I can play games while I watch those viewing apps. I can play my PS4, Wii U, and Switch all without using a TV.

This would make a lot of sense, actually

Devil's Advocate: You could also watch a viewing app on PS4/WiiU whilst playing a game on one of the remaining two consoles

I am quite happy that Nintendo focuses on the games and not the "entertainment" aspect. I mean, I know that MS and Sony want to push their whole product range right into my face, but all I want to have is games.

I have all those "entertainment device" features on my smartphone or my PC or my netbook, so I don't really need them day 1 at launch on my console as well. However, I am pretty sure that an Netflix app will come along at some point, even though other (mobile) devices are better equipped for displaying the content.

It's a good step back from the WiiU which even included Nintendo TV - they wanted WiiU do be that "entertainment device" and it didn't click with the customers. So I understand why they try to do without it this time. At least without promoting it that strongly (Nintendo TV was huge in their marketing mix).

I was very disappointed not having Netflix on the Playstation TV device which only made sense to include but I thought for sure it would be included on the Switch so I am a bit surprised.

My jimmies will not be rustled because of this as I have way too many netflix devices to really care if it will not be included but it would be nice if it did.

My TV, my PS4, my Chromecast and my miracast phone were not enough, I'm disappointed. I understand some people want Nintendo to compete for the spot of "only console and media player in the home", but two other companies are already doing that.

If they actually believe the TV features are the reason Wii U failed they're more delusional than I thought.

This is one of the features that my 8 year old daughter wanted as my wife and I were going to help buy her a Switch for her birthday. I thought the lack of games at launch would be OK because she would get plenty of use out of it as a media player.

This news has thrown a spanner in the works. I think I'm going to speak to my wife later and suggests cancelling our pre order after we talk to my daughter about other options. I just can't see my daughter getting any sort of value out of the device with its current line up of games and features.

My TWC app isn't available on PS4 or WiiU. And I don't think Plex is on Wii U either. That's just a small sample of the apps I use that's not on consoles.

When you are travelling, do you take all 4000 with you? You must drive a truck.

Such failure. Nobody would take all their devices when they travel. You'd only need to take one other device. When I travel, I usually take my 3DS, Vita, Tablet and my hybrid PC/Tablet. All fit nicely in a relatively small messenger bag I use.

People that don't have 4k and HDR should cancel their Netflix subscriptions as well right?

And magically all Netflix content will be 4k and HDR I guess.

Such hyperbole times, lol.

Nice skipping "At launch" in the thread title.

Even if data-capping and bandwith from telecom companies was not a hurdle, I'd be down for none-4k netflix.

If I'm streaming in my bed with the Switch in portable mode, I think I'd be just fine without 4k.

A basic ipad can do this. Vita can do it. Unfathomable that Switch released in 2017 with it's own, separate online paywall wouldn't offer it at some point.

This ride is getting better and better I tell you! The Switch doesn't have features the PS Vita has, a device from fucking 2012, and people still try to spin it like it's the second coming of the iPhone 😌

Switch isn't just a home device, but a mobile one too. That's why lite table features could be useful on a switch. You could watch netflix on your TV then remove switch from the dock and seamlessly continue watching netflix elsewhere.

Just seems like a missed opportunity and it's not something xb1 or ps4 can do.

I believe pretty much the same. Hw was ready but services were not. The system is quite bare bones feature wise and title wise.

But I think the original plans were for a 2017 fall launch.

You mean, like you already do with your phone / tablet, where your other Nintendo online services apparently lie as well?

Look, you're right. If they had wanted to build a tablet-lite kind of experience, they could have and it wouldn't have been a waste. Maybe they are in fact planning for that, just not at launch (that being its own bundle of snakes). Is it bad that they didn't? I don't think so. It's conscious that people are surgically implanted with their smartdevices and do not require their secondary portable gadget to provide overlap in services. Let the main device take the burden, at least for now.

Do you have an Android phone? Get a dirt cheap Chromecast. It's by far the best solution for this. When the Chromecast came out I stopped using my Wii U as media consumption device and never looked back.

I don´t care using my WiiU for that, it´s just that it´s place in the TV desk will be replaced with the Switch dock, so it´ll be less accessible, but I still plan on keeping it plugged in and ready to go. It´ll just be a minor nuance. Why did you stop using your WiiU for that? I think the Netflix and Youtube apps work pretty well.

I would imagine that nintendo will have a OS/Features direct in the coming weeks. I understand your frustrations though, but maybe best to wait till then, whilst research other options?

On one side, it's sad, since the Wii U was the best internet porn watching device ever.
On the other side, I applaud the decision to do a "games only" device.

If there were games for launch, though... :D

I really hated the YT app on Wii U but the browser was amazing. It's just way more convenient to use the phone to pick videos and stream them on the Chromecast. And again, I don't like the thought of using an entire console for a minor task a small streaming stick can handle just as well or even better. Makes me feel guilty.

I bet the amount of Wii U media app users were in the single-digit percentages and so, ultimately, you guys are irrelevant.

Geez.

The more I hear about the switch, the more I wonder if Nintendo are just trying to get around not having enough stock at launch by just making it seem undesirable for at least a few month!

I hadn´t looked into Chromecast but your post intrigued me and wow, it looks like a really cool device! I can also stream from my laptop to the TV, that will save the trouble of having to copy clips on a USB stick each time I want to watch something not on Netflix on the TV. Now I need one! XD

If you are using Chrome you can stream YouTube videos natively on the thing. For anything other than that you can mirror your screen, which isn't that great of an experience. If you are using an Android phone you can stream pretty much every video from Chrome natively. That way I could even watch Giant Bomb premium videos before I found an Android app for that.

We're back to console being gaming only, singular. It's still competing against 2 systems which can "do it all", so to speak.

Gaming machine only but it can do basic gaming features like party chat and MP lobbies on its own. Praise Nintendo.

I'm not talking business choices. Yeah, it's probably a bad business decision.

I'm just stating my personal preference: I don't care for other media inside my consoles, never used any of those apps in the past, neither on my Wii U, nor on my PS3.

Again, I don't have an agenda. I think the reveal was underwhelming and I've criticised Nintendo a lot. The fact I don't care about this stuff doesn't make me a Nintendo apologist.

Oh no! Where will I watch Netflix on March 3? GAF help me! :'(

This is getting ridiculous, I have 8 devices that can access Netflix 2 of them I have with me all the time, even if I don't need it in Switch, it will happen.

The (stupid) hate threads need to stop.

Not sure why people are mocking you.
Fair enough, we don't know the exact specifications of the Switch SoC but Shield TV plows through 4K HDR streaming and even high bitrate local playback with no sweat. They can't possibly have crippled it to not being capable of this.
I still hope the HDMI 1.4 is just the devkit and they won't release the consumer hardware with this port, leaving open possibilities for 4K UI output and Netflix/Amazon etc.

Continous netflix playback sounds pretty sweet indeed.

That's exactly what I've done? I didn't say "praise Nintendo this is the right decision, those filthy apps need to go away". I said "I understand your plight guys" and "but personally I'm ok with it" exactly because I've always ignored that stuff.

You guys are being needlessly hostile towards people simply stating they have different needs or tastes.

Recently I was reading how some wanted Switch to replace their tablet for the most basic functions. Now it's disclosed that it won't even have Netflix, and in typical fashion the response is "who needs it anyway?"
