New Zelda: Breath of the Wild screenshots and closer look at full Hyrule map

Eh - look in the third comparison, the tree in the middle of the screen past the lake is missing on the Wii U. There's definitely a difference.
The difference is the point from where the screenshot is taken.
Link is farther from the tree on wiiu than on switch.

As beautiful as it looks, I still would have vastly preferred a more realistic look like the initial Wii U tech demo.

I'll take a seamless beautiful open world over some realistic interiors. :p

I know the Wii U doesn't look quite as good as the Switch version, but I'm fine with how it looks overall. Spending $40 (discounts etc) vs $400 helps me feel that way as well though.

I think WW cemented the idea that I will always rather have a cell shaded Zelda game over a more realistic look. It just works for me.

I don't know I'm looking at both and after you get like 200 yards out there is a drop off on the Wiiu that you don't see on the switch. That being said though the Wiiu version still loooking better than I thought a Wiiu game ever would.

Yeah. Wasn't convinced until I played it on the GameCube in 2003 and was like holy crap.. I'm glad I was wrong this looks amazing. Made the following two console games hard to look at.

That already looks dated. The art style they have now looks amazing and will be much kinder over the years.

But holy shit the draw distance details are way different than I though they would be. I would take 900p and those visuals vs 1080p and the Wiiu draw distances any day. I thought they were going to be almost the exact same more or less besides resolution.
People were mocking it when it was first shown at the Wii U reveal lol

Ocarina and Majora's Mask 3D are the definitive "realistic" Zelda art-styles, and even their worlds are quite wacky and colorful.

Twilight Princess is hard to look at with its color scheme and textures, it shines in areas like dungeons and interiors when there's more color.

Wii U version looks fantastic. Switch maybe a little better but wonderful news if framerate performance is close for those grabbing it on Wii U.

Can't wait to play this on a HANDHELD!

the area of the map within the sky blue circle is the area of the E3 demo. You can kinda guess the size of the entire rest of the map from that.
A.K.a big as shit

I remember when I was impressed when that was revealed. Now it doesn't even remotely look impressive.

I dunno, I'm still impressed by it. I don't want Zelda to ever look like that tho.

Breath of the Wild is such a beautifully realized version of Zelda, I just can't imagine an improvement
outside of the obvious AA / resolution and the like

The art direction in this game is godly. God damn. Wii U version looking like a champ, too! What a swan song for the console.

Are they ever gonna show the dungeons? I just want to see something simple, like a compass room.

I don't really care about the overworld cause I have a million sandbox games to goof around in. Just care about dungeons/shrines.

At this point I'd rather not see anything more of the world than what we have seen.. hell its just like 6 weeks away.

We know they exist, so I rather they not spoil that.
Yea I know, I could just not click on it, but you and I both know that won't happen.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.

Yup, Wii U version is gorgeous. I'll be getting that for now.

Shame that they had to cut the gamepad map so that the Wii U version didn't make the Switch version inferior though.

Art style & direction = great. Graphics = pretty rough.

Yup. And I think it's fine to say this. I mean, this art style, as nice as it is, could truly benefit from better graphics. LOD and grass rendering distance are perfect examples of stuff that could be improved a lot and make the game look a lot better. You can even see in that first comparison pic on the first page between Switch and Wii U how big a difference increased LOD has.

so can you hunt and eat any wildlife you come accross?
they already said your horse can die so... we getting a red dead redemption deal where we can cook pseudo epona in a pot?

Aren't those Wii U images from last year? Wouldn't be surprised if it looks identical to the Switch version now, outside of resolution.

Anyone else spot the stadium/Colosseum-like structure immediately northwest of the Great Plateau? If you follow the Great Plateau's northern border, you're faced with a large mountain/cliff on the right of the road. On the north side of this cliff, lies a large stadium in partial ruins. This stadium lies on a kind of mini peninsula surrounded by water on three sides.

It is briefly visible in the 1/13 Treehouse footage, when Nate jumps off of the Great Plateau Tower.

I've marked Nate's flight path and circled this stadium in red.

We get a better shot of this in one of Polygon's videos. They're a little bit further up north at a Bokoblin outpost (this is marked with a light blue dot on the above map) during the day time. We catch a glimpse of the bridge that splits the body of water and provides access to the stadium's front entrance from Hyrule Field.

Seems of substantial size, but its a fair bit off from the castle and castle town. If EngineeringHyrule's measurement estimates are correct, this is just under 2KM away from the castle. Be interesting to imagine what purpose this may have served in a pre-calamity Hyrule. I cannot think of any similar structure in a previous game off the top of my head.

EDIT: On second thought, it is similar to Arbiter's Grounds but is clearly nowhere near the desert.

Cute that they tried to take shots at the same locations on both versions. During the Treehouse presentation, they mentioned how difficult it is to take a screenshot and then try and recreate it again later because the weather is always changing. They tried I guess, kinda.

Not going to look at the map.

Those screenshots... Man, I need this game. The draw distance is very good. I am sure the game will look stunning in motion.

So the different regions that Hyrule is broken into are:

1. Central Hyrule
2. Eldin
3. Faron
4. Ninayru
5. Hebra
6. Necluda
7. Altrum

I find it odd the lower left corner doesn't have a region affiliation though. I wonder if each region has a corresponding town/civilization. Central Hyrule could have a similar approach as castle town, Eldin has a Goron civilization, Faron has the Koroks and the Deku Tree, Ninayru has a Zora civilization, Hebra has Bird civilization, Necluda has Gerudo civilization, and Altrum has Kakariko village.

Anyone else annoyed that Nintendo's reusing the names of towns/areas like Eldin, Faron, and Lanryu? We've got like 3 games already with those places. What the hell?

At this point, they seem to be a main element of the land of Hyrule. It is the same place after all?

Well it makes sense since it is still Hyrule. Anyway it's not like they are the exact same places between games. It's just a name.

I actually like the consistency and is named after the Goddess'. Why not complain about Lake Hylia, Death Mountain, etc?

Totally different, as those are Zelda staples.

Though, I will say that Nintendo should start changing the names for those locales too.

Here's some rough labeling I made just prior to the promo map's release, as obscured as it may be.
I think it's fair to say that those aren't the names of every area, considering the desert (in which the Gerudo town is located) in the SE is largely obscured. The question remains as to where the farming village is situated, it could be in Faron or on the east side of the Central Hyrule river.

Literally since Zelda 2 dude. They're not going anywhere.

Edit: I wasn't clear. I mean they've been reusing town and character names, remixed, since Zelda 2. Towns of e
Tito, Daria, mido, etc etc.

It's part of building the lore of the series. If you want completely new stuff, follow the timeline after wind waker.
